Many a great musician has come out of Austin, Texas. It has historically offered up many left field artists and provided an outlet for music that might otherwise not have seen the light of day. So, Matthew Squires joins a long list of singer-songwriters using that base to get their music heard.
His music has been portrayed as idiosyncratic and ‘Tambaleo’, his sixth album, does nothing to dispel that description. This album is marketed as ‘subtly offbeat psychedelic pop’ which probably best sums up this offering. Easy listening it is not and it can be hard to detect the subtlety here. Marketed under the genre ‘Pop/Psych-Folk/Indie’ this may appeal to die-hard fans but it does not feel like an album that will bring his music to a wider audience.
‘Silent World’, with its deep groove and quirky backing vocals is the closest the album has to a radio friendly tune. It delivers a melodic flow that is lacking elsewhere here. The music has an almost experimental feel to it, quirky and thought provoking lyrics and unusual arrangements that are can be put firmly in the Marmite category of songwriting.
The lack of access to track lyrics is a disappointment as these are clearly labours of love and warrant a more nuanced assessment. Similarly, there is no clue to the supporting musicians employed on the album or the extent to which Matthew himself contributed musically.
‘Unwholesome Health’ begins with an imagined phone call from Judas bemoaning the pain he had inflicted upon Mary with his rather unchristian behaviour. That religious references surface on a number of tracks may not be a surprise with the knowledge that Matthew has spent much of the two years since his last album in a monastic Buddhist community in East Texas.
This a lyrically powerful album that is definitely offbeat, not without its merits, but does not have enough about it to really make it memorable.

ΦΙΛΟΠΟΙΜΗΝ ΦΙΝΟΣ με αφορμή τα 40 χρόνια από το θάνατό του, που συμπληρώνονται σήμερα
Ο Φιλοποίμην Φίνος γεννήθηκε το 1908 στην Κάτω Τιθορέα της Λοκρίδας (Φθιώτιδα) και πέθανε στην Αθήνα την 26η Ιανουαρίου του 1977. Λίγες μέρες νωρίτερα (12/1) η Finos Film κατέβαζε ρολά, μετά από 34 χρόνια, με την πρώτη προβολή τής τελευταίας ταινίας της Ο Κυρ-Γιώργης Εκπαιδεύεται. Σ’ αυτό το διάστημα ο «πατριάρχης» του ελληνικού σινεμά κατάφερε να ολοκληρώσει 187 ταινίες, δίνοντας οριστική πνοή σ’ εκείνο που αποκαλούμε Ελληνικός Κινηματογράφος. Ούτε Νέος, ούτε Παλιός, απλά Ελληνικός – καθότι χωρίς τις ταινίες τού Φίνου δεν θα είχε υπάρξει ούτε ο λεγόμενος «νέος» κινηματογράφος. Πρώτα-πρώτα από την τεχνική πλευρά του, το ανθρώπινο (τεχνικό) δυναμικό του.

Για τη ζωή του Φίνου έχουν γραφτεί και ειπωθεί πολλά, παρότι ο ίδιος σπανιότατα μιλούσε δημοσίως για τον εαυτό του και πολύ περισσότερο για τα τεχνικά επιτεύγματά του – για το γεγονός π.χ. πως είχε καταφέρει από το τίποτα, πριν από τον πόλεμο, να φτιάξει μηχανή, που να «γράφει» και να «μιλάει» ελληνικά. Έτσι, αποτέλεσμα αυτού ήταν να ετοιμάσει την πρώτη ομιλούσα ταινία του κινηματογράφου μας, Το Τραγούδι του Χωρισμού (1939), την οποία σκηνοθέτησε κιόλας. Ήταν η πρώτη και η τελευταία απόπειρά του στο ρόλο αυτό. Την ταινία, στην οποία πρωταγωνιστούσε ο Λάμπρος Κωνσταντάρας (στα τραγούδια τον ντουμπλάριζε ο φημισμένος τενόρος Πέτρος Επιτροπάκης), την είδαμε για πρώτη φορά στα τέλη του’95-αρχές ’96, στο Παλλάς, με αφορμή τις εκδηλώσεις για τα «Τα πρώτα 100 χρόνια του κινηματογράφου», καθώς έως τότε εθεωρείτο χαμένη.
Το 1943 είναι η κομβική χρονιά για την Finos Film καθώς προβάλλεται, μέσα στην Κατοχή (29 Μαρτίου) H Φωνή της Καρδιάς σε σκηνοθεσία Δημήτρη Ιωαννόπουλου και με πρωταγωνιστές τους Αιμίλιο Βεάκη, Δημήτρη Χορν, Καίτη Πάνου, Σμαρούλα Γιούλη, Λάμπρο Κωνσταντάρα κ.ά. Η μεγάλη, για τα δεδομένα της εποχής, επιτυχία της ταινίας δεν ευοδώθηκε, καθώς ο Φιλοποίμην μαζί με τον πατέρα του Γιάννη συλλαμβάνονται από τους Γερμανούς. Η κατάληξη; Ο απαγχονισμός του Γιάννη Φίνου, τον Ιούλιο του ’44 με την κατηγορία τού «δρώντος κομμουνιστή».

Mark Eitzel – Hey Mr Ferryman (2017)
Hey Mr Ferryman is Eitzel’s first full studio album recorded entirely in London. It was made at 355 Studios with Mercury Prize winner Bernard Butler (ex-Suede, McAlmont & Butler), who has produced and/or recorded albums with Tricky, Ben Watt, Bert Jansch, Edwyn Collins, and more. Butler produced Hey Mr Ferryman and played all of the electric guitar, bass, and keyboard parts on the album. Hey Mr Ferryman features the vivid melodies long associated with Eitzel’s former band American Music Club—which remains a cult favorite to this day—as well as Butler’s distinctive guitar that serves to complement Eitzel’s expressive vocals. Of that voice, Pitchfork once wrote: “If Leonard Cohen’s voice is a story about the passage of time and Levon Helm’s is a story about losing what is most precious to you, Eitzel’s is about the circuitous roads we take in search of ourselves.” “The songs on this record are about celebrating musicians and music, about misogyny, the long shadow of history, getting one’s head out of one’s ass,” quips Eitzel on the themes of Ferryman.

Cuban Counterpoint of Tobacco and Sugar: Sacred Musical Spaces in Western Cuba
Borrowing the title from Cuban polymath Fernando Ortiz, producer Ned Sublette takes a group of travelers, including you, to multiple sites in western Cuba to analyze the musical impact of what Ortiz called the “Cuban counterpoint” of tobacco and sugar. We’ll hear endangered species of drums in mountain farms and sugar towns, drilling down into the deep culture of the Afro-Cuban world. We’ll hear sacred drumming as handed down from Kongo sources, from Yorubaland, from Dahomey, and more, in sites that are indelibly stamped with the imprints of Africa, above all in music. We’ll hear an incredible poetic improviser, go to a block party in Matanzas, and talk to our guest scholar, Latin Grammy-winning record producer Caridad Diez, about the power of rumba and its meaning in Cuban society in the wake of UNESCO’s designation of rumba as world heritage. Update: Ned Sublette’s group was in Cuba at the time of Fidel Castro’s death. Ned, who covered the story for Billboard, tells us what he experienced as Cuba went for nine days without live music.
