Widely acclaimed Australian singer song-writer returns with her 4th official studio album. After a Time was recorded, mixed and co-produced by Tim Kevin (Youth Group, The Singing Skies) at his Tempe River Studios in Sydney. Throsby wrote all the songs, played various instruments and co-produced the album. She was joined in the studio by an eclectic band, including Mick Turner (Dirty Three, Cat Power) on guitar, Bree van Reyk (Paul Kelly, Seeker Lover Keeper) on drums, and Marcus Whale (Collarbones, BV) on saxophone. Guest vocals on ‘What Do You Say?’ were provided by iconic American musician Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters). Long time collaborators, Joseph Leonard and Jens Birchall, played bass and cello respectively.

Frontier Ruckus is one of those bands that (at least up until now) could easily be placed into the ‘well, you have to see them live category’. While the songs and performances have always been there, the band’s live magic has often been lost in translation on record. As someone who has seen the band multiple times, there is something about the awesomeness of a lead ‘saw’ player (like he actually plays a saw with a violin bow!) that just doesn’t seem to translate without the visual. But all of that is about to change, as the Detroit band’s forthcoming fifth album Enter the Kingdom reveals a band at the top of their game, primed and ready for discovery by a whole new audience.

Not unlike other acts of the recent folk revival (Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons, etc.), Frontier Ruckus has spent their career amalgamating country, folk and roots music into an Alt-Rock package, giving the band’s throwback sound and image an immediate palpability with their mostly-millennial audience. Over the course of a handful of indie releases, the band quickly moved beyond sheer novelty, refining their sound and focusing on their song-craft. Enter the Kingdom is best viewed as the culmination of this journey, as it captures the balance of both production quality and that live feel, revealing the group’s dynamic range as well as the ‘hugeness’ of their stage show.

Τα τελευταία άλμπουμ του τενόρο σαξοφωνίστα Noah Preminger ήταν «θάνατος». Λέω γιατο “Pivot: Live at the 55 Bar” [Private, 2015] και για το “Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground” [Private, 2016], αμφότερα παρουσιασμένα εδώ στο δισκορυχείον. Ο Preminger έχει διανύσει μεγάλη απόσταση από τις μέρες του ξεκινήματός του και αυτό δείχνει, γενικώς, έναν μουσικό, που «αγωνιά» για κάθε επόμενη δουλειά του, που το ψάχνει δηλαδή επιχειρώντας να δημιουργήσει όλα εκείνα τα αισθητικά αναχώματα επί των οποίων θα πατήσει κάθε νέο δισκάκι του. Έτσι λοιπόν και στο πιο πρόσφατο CD του, που έχει τίτλο “Meditations on Freedom” [Dry Bridge Records, 2016/17], o Preminger με την παρέα του (τον τρομπετίστα Jason Palmer, τον μπασίστα Kim Cassκαι τον ντράμερ Ian Froman) ψάχνουν να βρουν, και το βρίσκουν, το βάθρο πάνω στο οποίο θα πατήσουν. Και αυτό δεν είναι άλλο από την κοινωνικοπολιτική κατάσταση, έτσι όπως αυτή διαμορφώνεται (ή θα διαμορφωθεί) μετά την εκλογή Τραμπ στην Αμερική. Μάλιστα το άλμπουμ του Preminger κυκλοφόρησε την 20η Γενάρη τρέχοντος, την ημέρα ανάληψης των καθηκόντων του νέου προέδρου και είναι καταφανώς επηρεασμένο από το ρεπουμπλικανικό προεκλογικό κλίμα όλων των προηγούμενων μηνών.

Ο Preminger(όπως και εκατομμύρια άλλοι στην Αμερική – υπάρχουν βεβαίως και τα αντίθετα εκατομμύρια…) έχει τη γνώμη πως η εκλογή Τραμπ θα επηρεάσει την καθημερινότητα των πολιτών. Σκέπτεται μάλιστα, ή μάλλον πιθανολογεί, πως μπορεί να επαναληφθεί ένας είδος… sixtiesαγωνιστικότητας, όταν οι μειονότητες (φυλετικές και άλλες) αγωνίζονταν για τα δικαιώματά τους, με τη μουσική (και την jazz) να παίζει το δικό της ρόλο στις γενικότερες εξελίξεις. Αν είναι να συμβεί κάτι τέτοιο για το καλό της μουσικής, τότε δεν ξέρω αν πρέπει να πω… μακάρι να συμβεί. Τέλος πάντων… Η μουσική, και βεβαίως η μουσική του Preminger, μπορεί να παίρνει αφορμή από χίλια-δυο τινά, έχει όμως και τη δύναμη, το χάρισμα, πείτε το όπως θέλετε, να περνά πάνω απ’ όλα αυτά, ακολουθώντας το δικό της ξεχωριστό δρόμο. Και εδώ, στην περίπτωση του “Meditations on Freedom”, ο… δρόμος αυτός είναι μια… ακουστική/ αισθητική λεωφόρος.

Το σετ του Premingerχωρίζεται σε δύο μέρη. Στις versions, που δίνουν, αν θέλετε, και το πιο «αγωνιστικό» πνεύμα στο άλμπουμ [διασκευάζονται τα “Only a pawn in their game” του Bob Dylan, “Just the way it is” του Bruce Hornsby, “A change is gonna come” του Sam Cooke και “Give me love (Give me peace on earth)” του George Harrison] και βεβαίως στα originals, που είναι πέντε στον αριθμό και που μεταφέρουν (από τους τίτλους τους) έναν παρόμοιο «αέρα» (“We have a dream”, “Women’s march” κ.λπ.).

Το όλον κλίμα, είτε αφορά στις διασκευές είτε στα πρωτότυπα εμφανίζει στοιχεία τής λεγόμενης spiritual jazzτων sixties-seventies, όταν δεν διολισθαίνει προς περισσότερο εμφανείς blues/hard bop φόρμες. Γενικώς, μιλάμε για μιαν ομάδα αρίστων οργανοπαικτών, που παίζουν αρκετό καιρό (χρόνια) μαζί, δένοντας και φτιάχνοντας τον «προσωπικό» ήχο τους, που παραμένει, πάντα, δυναμικός και φυσικά απολαυστικός. Το “Meditations on Freedom” είναι απ’ αυτά τα άλμπουμ, εννοώ, που ξέρουν να φτιάχνουν σ’ αυτόν τον απόλυτο βαθμό μόνον οι Αμερικάνοι – κάτι που σχετίζεται, φυσικά, όχι μόνον με τις σπουδές τους (στα καλά μουσικά σχολεία που έχουν φοιτήσει), αλλά και με το ευρύτερο βίωμα.

When Nikki Lane sings about a woman with “tight blue jeans and long black hair” who will “come to play but she won’t stay,” on the title track to her third album, it’s difficult to imagine that’s not autobiographically based. As these songs progress, it’s clear that whether she’s describing a woman with a “Foolish Heart” who is infatuated, and somewhat concerned, with a lover who has her “hanging by a word” or expressing her desire to get to the top because “there ain’t no one gonna make me stop,” these tunes hew awfully close to her own feelings and aspirations.

Although there is nothing new in bringing personal experiences to your music, Lane’s husky voice — falling somewhere between the toughness of Lydia Loveless, the gusty vulnerability of Shannon McNally and the tangy torch of Neko Case — carries these country-tinged pop rockers with an edge that’s alternately defiant and vulnerable. The production by both the singer and her boyfriend Jonathan Tyler (who also contributes with backing vocals and guitar) neatly balances between slightly slick and earnestly earthy without offending those who lean to either camp.
