The Everett Smithson Band plays an interesting variety of music as well as standards that have a unique spin on them and many delightful originals. Come to any Everett Smithson Band performance and you can count on the band to create a party atmosphere. New Orleans / French Quarter Music is what you will see and hear. Zydeco, Blues, Rockin Roots, Hillbilly Hoedowns, gospel and more. With the music being very infectious and the playful stage presence, the audience gets connected fast. At ESB Mardi Gras performances–(whenever possible) Everett and Kathy bring a big cauldron of jambalaya — prepared with their own homegrown garden goods and homesmoked sausage. The song list is unpredictable with songs from Fats Domino, Johnny Cash, Howlin Wolf, Rosie Ledet, Wanda Jackson and Allison Krause — music from 1900 to the present time. The band consists of Phil Schmid on Guitar, Jeremy Johnson on Drums and the ubiquitous Bill Black on Standup Bass. These guys have played nationally and internationally with big name acts such as Bo Diddley, Lynwood Slim, Big George Jackson, Gary Primich and many others. They have played together for a long time and when they get together on stage they really tear it up with their solid rhythms and red hot instrumentals.

Book of Changes, the new album by Guy Blakeslee as ENTRANCE, is a poetic song cycle about the seasons of the heart, tracing an emotional journey through longing and emptiness to peace and redemption. The record achieves a seamless melding of the personal, political and philosophical, a vibrant document of an artist hitting a creative stride and discovering an expansive new sound. The adventurously produced collection of songs is reminiscent of Townes Van Zandt’s ruminative lyricism and the gypsy flavored orchestral explorations of Arthur Lee and Love, uniquely channeled through Blakeslee’s 21st Century approach to the spiritual dimensions of American songwriting in a way that gives an old form new power.

Book of Changes was written and recorded by Blakeslee over the course of a restless year of travel, touring and transformation. The album took shape in 11 different studios in Los Angeles and London, produced by Blakeslee and mixed by multi-instrumentalist David Vandervelde (Father John Misty, Jay Bennett) at Elliott Smith’s New Monkey Studios in Van Nuys, California. Additional mixing came from Chris Coady (Future Islands, Cass McCombs) who lent his talents to the song “Always the Right Time.” Grammy nominated engineer Sarah Register (David Bowie, The Shins) mastered Book of Changes.

Gandi αποκαλείται ένα καινούριο ελληνικό συγκρότημα (σχηματίστηκε το 2013), με τοTime and Youth[L39, 2017] να αποτελεί το πρώτο...
    ajazz%2Bgandi.jpg

The “Black Pacific” is a term coined by our guide, ethnomusicologist Heidi Carolyn Feldman. She describes the circumstance of African descendants displaced not only from their ancestral homes in Africa, but also from the Atlantic coast nations where their enslaved ancestors were originally brought.

This Hip Deep edition explores the sonically vibrant realm of Afro-Peruvian music, a young genre identification that has flourished since the 1950s and has now produced artists of international renown, such as singer Susana Baca, and the black folkloric company Peru Negro.

The music is sensuous and deeply beautiful, and represents a fascinating and little-understood history. We will hear from Juan Morillo, who represents Peru Negro, from Susana Baca, and from other artists and community scholars Feldman has worked with during her extensive research of this topic.

Produced by Simon Rentner and Wills Glasspiegel.

Fans of Martha Davis and the Motels have reason to rejoice, whether they first embraced the new wave band during the early ’80s when the Motels came roaring out of Los Angeles with their blockbusters “Only The Lonely” and “Suddenly Last Summer” for Capitol Records, or in their more recent and equally powerful incarnation. Martha has assembled a collection of extreme rarities for this collection spotlighting her at the height of her formidable vocal power. There are wonderful tracks recorded during the early years of the new millennium as well as gems produced by Ken Scott and writing collaborations with former David Bowie lead guitarist Earl Slick. One Motels track, “I Didn’t Come,” hails from the television program Hit Me Baby One More Time. It’s a treasure trove of tantalizingly hard-to-find Martha Davis performances, some with the latter-day Motels and some without. “I have so many songs in my song closet, so I’ve been dusting them off,” explains Martha. “It’s weird when you think about what choices you make for an album. You’ll go back sometimes and go, ‘Why wasn’t that one on there?’ So it gives you a chance to actually go back and get these other songs out into the light of day.” Forming a new band in 1997 that developed into a fresh iteration of the Motels was no overnight development. “I left Capitol, I think, in ’89,” says Davis. “For the first time in my life, I went a year without writing a song. It was like I was so discouraged by the business and where my music had gone, I just reupholstered couches. And then somebody came up to me and offered me a gig for 20 grand, or something silly. And I went, ‘I don’t have a band. But I’ll get one!’ The gig never happened, but I actually started a new band in the ’90s. I kind of started all over. I found these really young guys that had never even come close to a record contract, and I basically did it all over again, but started with more presence of mind because the first time it happens to you, it’s kind of so wild and weird that I don’t think you’re necessarily there completely, in terms of understanding what’s going on,” she continues. “For a while, we were Martha Davis Jr. And it morphed into me searching for newer musicians, and finally finding this group I have now, who are just the greatest guys in the world and amazing musicians.” That journey has taken Martha and her reformed lineup of Motels in some very interesting directions. “We weren’t really the band that we are today,” she says of their early years. “Now we’ve been together for years, and it’s definitely the new Motels. It’s not the one that was signed to Capitol, nor is it the one that was before Capitol. But it’s the new 2000s Motels.”

Chickenfoot’s new release BEST + LIVE (coming March 10, 2017) features the band’s first new tune in 5 years. The new track “Divine Termination” opens up the group’s first ever best of collection.
In addition to “Divine Termination,” BEST + LIVE includes over 90 minutes of live music – for the first time released on CD. Sammy Hagar says, “Listening to this collection of songs from the ‘Foot brings back memories of some of the most fun I’ve ever had in a band. The chemistry between Chad, Joe, Mike and me is very special. It’s almost like visual music — you can see us having fun when you listen to these songs.”

In May 2016, Chickenfoot reunited for two highly-anticipated one-time shows at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, and played their first complete set in more than six years, along with a special unveiling of the new tune “Divine Termination.” Joe Satriani describes the track as “bone crunching, hell raising rock, dripping with attitude and vibe. Just the way Chickenfoot likes it!”

Both the extra CD “LIVE” and the bonus tracks on the best of feature a 13 song strong set list including almost every song from Chickenfoot’s debut album as well as Sammy Hagar’s old Montrose classic “Bad Motor Scooter,” The Who’s “My Generation” and Joe Satriani’s interpretation of “The Star Spangled Banner” – all recorded live in Phoenix 2009 and available for the first time on CD.
