SATOKO FUJII ένα piano-solo 2CD από μια προσωπικότητα της σύγχρονης improv-jazz
Τα άλμπουμ της πιανίστριας Satoko Fujii παρουσιάζονται συχνά από το δισκορυχείον. Βασικά οι ορχήστρες της, που είναι κάμποσες, αλλά και τα μικρότερα σχήματά της (Gato Libre, New Trio, Ma-Do, Tobira κ.λπ.). Σπανίως –αν όχι ποτέ– γράφουμε για τα σόλο άλμπουμ της Fujii, μιας και αυτά είναι σπάνια ή εν πάση περιπτώσει σπανιότερα. Διάβασα πως από τα 79 CD που έχει ηχογραφήσει η Fujii έως τώρα (τα είχα για περισσότερα αναλογιζόμενος τις πολλαπλές «συμμετοχές» της) μόλις τέσσερα είναι τα piano-solo – με το τέταρτο να είναι το παρόν “Invisible Hand” [JAP. Cortez Sound, 2017].

Ζωντανά, λοιπόν, ηχογραφημένο στο κλαμπ Cortez, στο Mito της Ιαπωνίας, το άλμπουμ αυτό διαθέτει όλα τα αισθητικά χαρακτηριστικά της μουσικής της Fujii – χαρακτηριστικά που ξεκινούν από τη συσκευασία του 2CD με αυτό το έξτρα περίπου-obi και τα ιδιαίτερα εσώφυλλα, φθάνοντας μέχρι τους αυτοσχεδιασμούς και τις συνθέσεις (ή τον συνδυασμό τους).
Στο πρώτο CD, όπως διαβάζουμε, η μουσική είναι εντελώς αυτοσχεδιαστική. Μην νομιστεί όμως πως έχουμε τίποτα ακραίες και δύστροπες καταστάσεις συνεχώς και αδιαλείπτως. Η Fujii προτείνει, αρχικά, με το στρέιτ παίξιμό της ένα κάπως «τζαρετικό» ακρόαμα (“Thoughts”), το οποίο στην πορεία εξελίσσεται με άλλους πιο… ακανόνιστους ρυθμούς. Συμβάλλει, βεβαίως, το παίξιμο στο πιάνο «από μέσα» (“Invisible”), αλλά βεβαίως και η αντικατάσταση του όποιου «τζαρετικού» κλίματος, από ένα εν δυνάμει Cecil Taylor-ικό. Υπάρχει κι ένας καινοφανής συνδυασμός τους, βεβαίως, στο μεγαλύτερο σε διάρκεια και πιο εντυπωσιακό κομμάτι τού πρώτου CD, κι αυτό είναι το 15λεπτο “Floating”, που μπορεί να κερδίσει αμέσως τις εντυπώσεις.
Ακόμη πιο εντυπωσιακά είναι, όμως, τα πράγματα στο δεύτερο CD, που περιλαμβάνει περισσότερες συνθέσεις (έτσι φαίνεται) παρά καθαρούς αυτοσχεδιασμούς. Εδώ κυριαρχεί το 11λεπτο “Spring storm”, ένα φοβερό πιάνο-σόλο με έξοχες μελωδικές στρώσεις, συχνές αλλαγές τέμπο, ιλιγγιώδη clusters και ανεβοκατεβάσματα των πλήκτρων, που δημιουργεί στο άκουσμά του μια ψυχική πληρότητα.
Η Satoko Fujiiείναι μία από τις πιο σημαντικές προσωπικότητες τής σύγχρονης τζαζ. Τούτο, δε, το αποδεικνύει με κάθε ομαδική δουλειά της, όπως και με το παρόν σπάνιας δύναμης και ομορφιάς σόλο διπλό CDτης.

Steel Town, which is being produced by Luke Laird, will feature 11 tracks, including Moakler’s well-known songs “Suitcase” and “Love Drunk,” as well as three other songs previously released on Moakler’s 2016 self-titled EP. The record’s other six songs are brand-new, co-written by Moakler and fellow tunesmiths such as Casey Beathard, Barry Dean, Laird, Gordie Sampson and Caitlyn Smith.
“Looking back and being in the moment can seem like contradictory things, but I think they make each other sweeter somehow. That tension is what this record Steel Town is about,” explains Moakler in a press release. “It’s the most personal record I’ve made, and even though it’s my fourth album, it feels like Chapter One in my story.”
For Steel Town, Moakler gathered inspiration from his life and used it for songs such as “Siddle’s Saloon,” about his grandfather’s bar; “Steel Town,” which focuses on the stories of people from the singer’s hometown of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and “Wheels,” a song that describes the feeling of returning home after a while, and all the emotions that come with it.
