Land of Gold is Anoushka Shankars fervent response to the humanitarian trauma of displaced people fleeing conflict and poverty.
The virtuoso sitar player explores an expressive range, conveying an evocative journey infused with a message of enduring hope. With exquisite arrangements blending genres and musical collaborations, Land of Gold is a narrative communicated with conviction and poetic beauty.
Land of Gold originated in the context of the humanitarian plight of refugees. It coincided with the time when I had recently given birth to my second child. I was deeply troubled by the intense contrast between my ability to provide for my baby, and others who desperately wanted to provide the same security for their children but were unable to do so. The narrative thread carried throughout the album evokes themes of disconnection, vulnerability and the underlying hope that persists in our darkest experiences. My instrument is the terrain in which I explore the gamut of emotional expression evoking shades of aggression, anger and tenderness, while incorporating elements of classical minimalism, jazz, electronica and Indian classical styles. Notable electronic producer Matt Robertson (who is a long-term collaborator of Bjork) added cinematic soundscapes and textures, enhancing the initial compositions. Anoushka worked with a core-team of gifted musicians: At its base the album is designed as a trio of Anoushka, the famous Hang Drum player Manu Delago who performs on and co-wrote many of the pieces, and Sanjeev Shankar who was a student of her father Ravi Shankar, playing the Shehnai, a beautiful reed instrument from India.
Top notch female guest artists lend their voices to the album: M.I.A. with the Song, Jump In (Cross the Line), the wonderful singer Alev Lenz on Land of Gold and the actress and activist Vanessa Redgrave on Remain the Sea (reading a poem by Pavana Reddy). Not only do they add different musical styles and voices of different generations but all of them represent strong women known for using their voices for equality and against injustice. The last song Reunion features a girls children choir Girls for Equality.
The music is mainly based on western harmonics, features great electronic programming, string arrangements, hip hop elements, beautiful songwriting and virtuoso sitar performances embedded in exciting contemporary arrangements.

The New York Times dubs R Stevie Moore a “lo-fi legend”, he has over 400 releases to his credit since he started making music in 1968. Jason Falkner is a power pop pioneer who started his career in the 80’s with The Three O’clock and is a founding member of Jellyfish. He has released numerous solo records and has worked with such greats as Beck, Air, Aimee Mann, Travis and Paul McCartney. Moore and Falkner are legends on their own but, as Make It Be loudly announces, their voices, performances, and arrangements have always been a match made in heaven waiting to be realized here on earth.

Snowapple is a folk/pop trio based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The voices of Snowapple are: Una Bergin (a jazz singer who loves world music), Laurien Schreuder (an opera singer of international fame) and Fanny de Ruiter (a classically trained singer who performed at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw in her pre-Snowapple life). Their début album (the self-titled Snowapple, set for a March 2013 release) mixes dreamy folk and catchy pop in a way reminiscent of artists such as The Be Good Tanyas, Fleet Foxes, Anais Mitchell but also Edith Piaf.
When Maria Quiles (vocals and guitar) and Rory Cloud (vocals and guitar) met in 2011, both were adrift. Maria had quit her job, given up her San Francisco apartment, and moved in with her uncle in order to pursue music full-time. Rory had left behind a stable schedule of gigs and music lessons in Southern California to seek a new music community elsewhere.
Their sound has struck a chord with audiences all over the country. Quiles & Cloud have now played hundreds of shows, won the 2014 FreshGrass Duo Award, and caught the attention of Grammy Award-winning banjo player Alison Brown – who produced their third album Shake Me Now, which comes out on Compass Records on March 17th, 2017.
Shake Me Now is stripped-down, yet dense. There are musical and lyrical traces of the blues, bluegrass, folk, rock, soul, and classical music. In addition to their original songs, there are reinterpreted versions of the traditional blues number “Deep Ellum Blues”, the traditional folk tune “Worried Man Blues”, and Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”. One gets the feeling of being on a widescreen road trip through America’s past and present, with multiple eras and traditions folding in upon each other. The result sounds familiar and roadworn, yet completely new – a quality that Quiles & Cloud share with some of American music’s greatest innovators.
We know what to expect with ‘Desert Blues’ by now. In some ways, Tamikrest’s fourth album doesn’t venture far from the formula of unhurriedly evolving, hypnotic mash-ups of the sparsest of Delta Blues (John Lee Hooker’s skeletal stomps being a particularly apt point of comparison) and ancient call-and-response song forms of the nomadic Tuareg people of Sahara, with a whiff of more modern mixers of Blues and Rock chucked in to place us more firmly in the ongoing century, with lyrical themes centred on the ongoing struggle for Tuareg self-determination amidst resistance from governments, corporations and, more recently, fundamentalist militias.
As such, it’s difficult to describe Kidal – named after the town where the band first got together…
…- without mentioning a certain group of more seasoned Desert Blues practitioners. However, it’d hugely unfair to describe Tamikrest as merely Tinariwen Jr. Although the likes of the mesmerising opener “Mawarniha Tartit” cultivate a loping, unhurried groove, there’s nothing laidback whatsoever about Kidal. Whether straddling a wildly galloping groove (“War Toyed”, “War Tila Eridaran”) or engaging in minimalist meditation (“Tanakra”), there’s an intensity and irresistible energy to the proceedings that place Tamikrest nearer to the nimble raw power of innovators such as Songhoy Blues than the more steadily paced, tradition-upholding Desert Blues pioneers.
There’s a compelling sense of an expanding sonic arsenal to Kidal, too. Although the straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll drumming on “Adoutat Salilagh” doesn’t really gel, the biting slide guitar – with echoes of vintage Pink Floyd transplanted to sun-scorched surroundings, perhaps – on the atmospheric “Atwitas” proves how subtle tweaks and well-judged added ingredients can invigorate and renew time-worn formulas.
The result is a stunning realisation of Tamikrest’s potential. Forget about genres, political backdrops and the exotic location (Bamako, Mali, where the album was recorded, to be precise) this music derives from: Kidal is first and foremost a kick-ass, spirited rock ‘n’ roll album that demands to be heard far beyond any ‘World Music’ specialist interest circles.
