These past few weeks, Afropop has hosted a series of concerts at Threes Brewing in Gowanus, Brooklyn featuring some of our friends from New York’s extensive African and Afro-diasporic music scenes. We kicked it off on March 9 with blazing hot sounds of the Congo from Harlem-based musician Nkumu Katalay and the Life Long Project Band. Katalay, a passionate and charismatic dancer, singer and drummer, led his band through a constant stream of high-energy Congolese ndombolo. The Congolese singer Rafiya sang with the band for a few songs and pulled out a couple of solo songs too, accompanied by two dynamic dancers.

Our second installment–a night featuring Afropop’s Banning Eyre’s band Timbila and the phenomenal Colombian bullerengue group Bulla en El Barrio–was unfortunately snowed out by the recent blizzard, but we hope to reschedule. Our third night, however, was a shining star to make up for the the previous week’s absence. On March 21, the brewery’s intimate performance space was graced with vibes from Ivorian rapper and Afropop collaborator Kinté, Le Prince Héritier, and one of our long-time favorite local live acts, Jomion and the Uklos, who play a technicolor array of sounds: traditional Beninese vodun rhythms, salsa, Afro-rock, gospel and jazz. Another Afropop collaborator, DJ Nenim, kicked off the night with his signature, consistently on-point blend of contemporary Afrobeats hits and old school Afrobeat, disco and Afro-funk. Kinté hopped on the mic for a set of his own singular brand of roots hip-hop, rhyming in French and English over solid beats that often bring in kora and other more traditional sounds from the West African coast.

Jomion and the Uklos kept the energy flowing with their unstoppably grooving and constantly transforming sounds. This is a true family band: drummer Samuel “Jomion” Gnonlonfoun is joined by his two brothers Mathieu (on percussion and trumpet) and J.B. (on keys and percussion), as well as his own daughter, Rose, on vocals. Their music kept the crowd dancing hard for the whole night, occasionally breaking into intense, rhythmic vodun jams. Jomion and the Uklos is an exceptional live band: Do what you can to see them live, you will be blown away.

What could be more fun than an Afropop party fed by the sunny sounds of Kinté, Le Prince Héritier and Jomion and the Uklos? Only the very same Afropop party with a late-night dance party deejayed by the one and only DJ Nenim. Big up to Nenim for his impeccable, ever-danceable music choices.

Originating in Belgium at the tail end of the ’60s and into the ’70s, Popcorn was a music and dance scene with an emphasis on often obscure black American records of the then recent past.
Drawing immediate parallels with the UK’s Northern Soul scene from approximately the same time, young people would flock from all corners of Belgium to cram into a converted farmhouse barn to dance to these exotic sounds. But whilst Northern favoured an often uptempo, stomping ’60s soul sound, popcorn focused almost entirely on slower, moodier numbers.

Philippe Baden PowellAs the son of the late, great, Brazilian musical guitarist Baden Powell, Philippe Baden Powell has a lot to live up to, but with his Far Out label debut, Notes Over Poetry, the 39-year-old pianist / composer crafts a stellar effort that preserves the distinguished heritage of samba and Bossa Nova that his father helped perfect while drawing on soul, funk and spoken word.
It’s an inspired mix: “Chica” and “Recado pra Voce” are two infectiously breezy lite-funk movers, and “Hues” features an especially timely yet unintentionally tribute to Al Jarreau; all three are especially accessible examples of Powell’s sophisticated compositional skill. Awash in warm acoustic tones, instrumental cuts like the sizzling samba of “Vamos Donatear” and the more…

…introspective “For You to Know” showcase Powell’s fluid piano playing and Andre Ceccarelli’s nuanced percussion. With Notes Over Poetry, Philippe Baden Powell has honoured his lineage and added to its canon.

Livy EkemezieLegendary EMI Nigeria producer Odion Iruoje and rare African music collector Temi Kogbe have launched a new label called Odion Livingstone, a brand new venture out of Lagos, Nigeria in association with Strut Records. The label is one of the only imprints based in Nigeria to specialize in new and back catalogue releases from across Africa, bringing a fresh African perspective.
The debut release is an official reissue of the much in-demand 1983 LP Friday Night by Livy Ekemezie, a brilliant one-off independently released disco / funk album originally pressed at William Onyeabor’s pressing plant in Enugu.
Soundway Records’ recent Doin’ It in Lagos compilation did a terrific job shining a light on the lesser-known boogie and disco-funk sound of…

    69 MB  320 ** FLAC

…early ’80s Nigeria. That set included Ekezemie’s “Holiday Actions”, one of the standout cuts from the musician/producer’s brilliant – but ludicrously hard to find – 1983 album, Friday Night. The set sees Ekezemie effortlessly join the dots between Clavinet-heavy, Afro-tiged disco-funk, boogie, AOR ballads and, in the case of the brilliant “Dedication”, his own tribute to Stevie Wonder classic “Superstition”.

“I was just out of senior secondary school and I wanted to make an album,” recalls Ekemezie. “I was into disco and funk at the time and I was looking for a bassdriven funky sound. The entire idea was to make an album that sounded like something made in London or the U.S. I tried to sound “American” but we ended up with something else: a mix of American and Nigerian.” ‘Friday Night’ was recorded at Goddy Oku’s Godiac 24-track recording studio in Enugu, one of the best studios available in Nigeria at the time. “It took about 9 months to a year to make the album,” continues Ekemezie. “I financed it by myself so I had to resort to friends helping out with loans for session men and studio time. The original LP was released on blue vinyl and that idea came from William Onyeabor. We used his pressing plant and he sold the idea to me. It was different so I said ‘why not?’”

    ajazz%2Bbaby%2Bguru.jpg
και της τραγουδοποιίας του Brian Eno (φάση “Before and After Science”).
