I Keep It To Myself – The Best Of Wilko Johnson draws together 25 tracks recorded between 2008 and 2012 by the legendary guitarist and songwriter with backing largely provided by Blockheads Norman Watt-Roy (bass) and Dylan Howe (drums), the same rhythm section that performed on Wilko’s enormously successful Going Back Home album with Roger Daltrey.

GIANNI MIMMO: Prossime Trascendenze [IT. Amirani]

Σοπρανίστας είναι ο Gianni Mimmo, και από τους πιο διακεκριμένους τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες στη γείτονα Ιταλία. Εν τω μεταξύ έχουμε γράψει πολλές φορές στο δισκορυχείον για τα παλαιότερα CD του, και εν πάση περιπτώσει πάντα θα το κάνουμε (όταν μας δίνεται η ευκαιρία δηλαδή), καθότι ο Mimmo γράφει ή παράγει αξιοπρόσεκτες μουσικές, που περιστρέφονται, συνήθως, γύρω από το τρίπτυχο jazz/ improv/ avant. Ένα τέτοιο άλμπουμ, που κινείται χοντρικά γύρω απ’ αυτά τα είδη (ας προσθέσουμε όμως και τη «σύγχρονη κλασική»), είναι και το “Prossime Trascendenze”.

Βασικά, εδώ περιλαμβάνονται δύο έργα. Το 23λεπτο (δύο tracks) “Duo Sestetti” (για σοπράνο σαξόφωνο, τρομπέτα, τρομπόνι, μπάσο κόρνο, βιολί, κοντραμπάσο) και το 32λεπτο (πέντε tracks) “Cinque Multipli” (για σοπράνο, αγγλικό κόρνο, γαλλικό κόρνο, βιολί, κρουστά). Και τα δύο έργα είναι καινούρια, αφού συνετέθηκαν στη διετία 2014-15 και βεβαίως ηχογραφημένα προσφάτως.

Στο πρώτο απ’ αυτά παρακολουθούμε μια σειρά από συμπράξεις πνευστών (παράλληλους λόγους περισσότερο, παρά συνομιλίες), οι οποίες υποστηρίζονται από δύο έγχορδα με δοξάρι. Αν και ενδιαμέσως καταγράφονται σόλο στιγμές απ’ όλα τα όργανα (π.χ. κάπου ακούς το σοπράνο του Mimmo να αυτοσχεδιάζει σαν κλαρίνο – άρα υπάρχει και μια τάση να «πατηθούν» αλλότρια τίμπρε), στην πράξη είναι οι διάλογοι, των δύο οργάνων, των τριών… εξαρτάται, που οδηγούν την εγγραφή. Το κλίμα, πάντως, θα το χαρακτήριζα περισσότερο σύγχρονο κλασικό/ αβαντγκαρντίστικο παρά jazz/ improv – χωρίς τούτο να σημαίνει πως το “Duo Sestetti” είναι λιγότερο ενδιαφέρον.

Τώρα, στο δεύτερο έργο, το “Cinque Multipli”, τα κρουστά σε πρώτη φάση κάνουν μια διαφορά –κυρίως ως υποσκάπτοντα μιαν ηχητική κανονικότητα με… εφφέ παρεμβάσεις– ενώ και το βιολί έχει περισσότερο χώρο (ως το μόνο έγχορδο) να συνομιλήσει με το σοπράνο, καθώς τα κόρνα μοιάζει να αυτοσχεδιάζουν σ’ ένα δεύτερο επίπεδο. Εδώ, θα μπορούσε μάλιστα να διερευνηθούν και σχέσεις δύναμης και πάθους, ορισμένες φορές όχι μακριά από την αίσθηση / λειτουργία ενός σάουντρακ με επικές διαστάσεις. Συναρπαστικό ως εξέλιξη, αλλά για κάπως μυημένους ακροατές.

YOKO MIURA, GIANNI MIMMO: Departure [IT. Setola di Maiale, 2016]

Ηχογραφημένο στο Μιλάνο, το 2015, το “Departure” είναι μια συνεργασία τις ιαπωνίδας πιανίστριας Yoko Miuraκαι του σοπράνο σαξοφωνίστα Gianni Mimmo. To ντούο, που συνθέτει και αυτοσχεδιάζει, ή συνθέτει σαν να αυτοσχεδιάζει, καταγράφεται σε πέντε tracks, τα οποία αποκαλύπτουν υψηλό βαθμό επικοινωνίας, έμπνευση και εφευρετικότητα. Μάλιστα, στο εισαγωγικό 12λεπτο “Prologue” θα έλεγα πως παρουσιάζεται το άπαν. Από τη μια μεριά η αποτύπωση των μελωδικών και ρυθμικών μεγεθών, και από την άλλη η ανάγκη εξερεύνησης των δυνατοτήτων, όπως λέμε, των δύο οργάνων, μέσω χειρισμών και ηχοχρωμάτων οι οποίοι (και τα οποία) εκπλήσσουν. Δεν είναι μόνο το παίξιμο στο πιάνο «από μέσα» ή τα παράξενα τίμπρε του τενόρο σαξοφώνου, αλλά βασικά ο συνδυασμός τους, που τα φέρνει σε μια φάση «άλλη». Αυτό το «άλλο», που έχει να κάνει με την ανάγκη να αποδομηθεί ελαφρώς η γραμμικότητα και περαιτέρω το αναμενόμενο, αποκτά νέες διαστάσεις στο επόμενο μεγάλο track του άλμπουμ, το 10λεπτο “Boogie-woogie wonderland”, στο οποίο επιχειρείται το… γκρέμισμα και από ’κει και κάτω η ανακατασκευή ενός κλασικού πιανιστικού ρυθμού, με τα ίδια υλικά, τοποθετημένα, τώρα, σε επιμελώς διαφορετικές θέσεις.

Εδώ, σ’ αυτό το track, που αποτελεί και το επιστέγασμα της συνεργασίας της Miura και του Mimmo, η συνεργασία, η ταύτιση και, φυσικά, η αποτελεσματικότητα των δύο μουσικών πιάνει κορυφή.

As we eagerly await Salif Keita’s appearance in New York this week (his last appearance here was 2014), and in other locations accessible to our readers around the U.S., here is a “Best of The Beat” cover feature on “Mali’s Musical Monarch” from 1991. Our correspondent, Brooke Wentz, found herself in Bamako in the midst of the violent political coup d’etat that felled President Moussa Traore after 23 years in power.

Brooke sent us a first-hand report on her chance encounter with Salif in Bamako, the political uprising, and chaos in the streets. Salif, as a local hero, became her protector, and she ultimately escaped Bamako with him as they fled to his family’s home village of Djoliba for safety.

It’s a fascinating adventure tale, and she also discusses his then-new recording, Amen, and reprises his life and career to date. An additional sidebar reviews a 1991 documentary film, Salif Keita: Destiny of a Noble Outcast (Island Visual Arts), which may be difficult to find today, but provides a contextual companion to Brooke’s narrative.
