Whiskey & Wimmen: John Lee Hooker’s Finest, a new 16-track compilation from Vee-Jay, does just that. Vee-Jay was just one of many record labels that Hooker worked with over his multi-decade career, and this collection — primarily focusing on his most prolific period in the 1950s and ‘60s — includes songs originally released on three other labels, as well.

Ένα ωραίο CD βραζιλιάνικης τζαζ έχουμε μπροστά μας και ακούμε, υπογεγραμμένο από το Reunion Project – δηλαδή τους Felipe Salles σαξόφωνα, φλάουτο, κλαρινέτα, Chico Pinheiro κιθάρες, Tiago Costa πιάνο, Bruno Migotto μπάσο καιEdu Ribeiro ντραμς. Πλήρες σετ δηλαδή και συγχρόνως μια σειρά πρωτότυπων συνθέσεων (η μόνη διασκευή αφορά στο “Yesterdays” του Jerome Kern), που θέλγουν με την απλότητα και την ευφράδειά τους. Ναι, το λέμε τούτο επειδή, στο “Varanda” [Tapestry, 2017] (γραμμένο κάπου στη Μασαχουσέτη τον Μάρτιο του ’16), εκείνο που μετράει δεν είναι το ρηξικέλευθο και η πολυπλοκότητα, αλλά η ανάγκη να εκφραστείς με τρόπους απλούς, γλυκούς, «ευγενείς» και χαμηλών τόνων, όπως έκανε πάντα, χοντρικά, η βραζιλιάνικη τζαζ. 

Τούτο δε σημαίνει, βεβαίως, πως οι συνθέσεις των μελών του γκρουπ είναι πλαδαρές ή βαρετές. Υπάρχει «εσωτερική» ένταση ακόμη και στα χαμηλότερα των παιξιμάτων, ενώ κομμάτια όπως το 9λεπτο “Jack and the goblin brother” φανερώνουν, με τον πιο κατηγορηματικό τρόπο, τις δυνατότητες και το υψηλό εκτελεστικό επίπεδο του εν λόγω γκρουπ. Με αναφορές στην contemporary jazz (στους Yellowjackets π.χ.), στη fusion του Pat Metheny, και βεβαίως στις μεγάλες μουσικές προσωπικότητες της πατρίδας τους (Elis Regina, Milton Nascimento, Hermeto Pascoal κ.λπ.), οι Reunion Project έχουν τον τρόπο, μέσω του “Varanda”, να σε κρατάνε ζεστό.
