James Yorkston, Jon Thorne and Suhail Yusuf Khan make much of the novelty of mixing folk, jazz and Indian music. Although Indo-Jazz fusion is commonplace, folk and jazz common bedfellows and Pentangle, among others, famously combined all three genres.
That caveat aside, the amalgam here works fine and from time to time transcendently, as when Yorkston sings the opening verses of “Recruited Collier” and then Khan’s voice soars up beside him; or when “False True Lover” suddenly swerves into a raga. Elsewhere, when Thorne’s limber double bass plays games with Khan’s sarangi.

From Jimi Hendrix to BB King to George Benson, Joe Pass, Carlos Santana, John Mc Laughlin, Jimmy Page, Hank Marvin, Chet Atkins, Jeff Beck, Jerry Garcia, Eric Clapton or Mark Knopfler To the source Django, genius musician at the heart of this biopic realized by Etienne Comar with Reda Kateb. For the music, the director has opted for experts in djangology: the Trio Rosenberg. The formation composed of Stochelo, Nous’che and Nonnie Rosenberg revisits with rigor and virtuosity the standards of the master. Warren Ellis of the Bad Seeds of Nick Cave, already author of many music of films, is also of the part, for a composition that closes this beautiful disc which will touch the aficionados of jazz Manouche.
