Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda’s devotion to spirituality was the central purpose of the final four decades of her life, an often-overlooked awakening that largely took shape during her four-year marriage to John Coltrane and after his 1967 death. By 1983, Alice had established the 48-acre Sai Anantam Ashram outside of Los Angeles. She quietly began recording music from the ashram, releasing it within her spiritual community in the form of private press cassette tapes. On May 5, Luaka Bop will release the first-ever compilation of recordings from this period, making these songs available to the wider public for the first time. Entitled ‘World Spirituality Classics, Volume 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda,’ the release is the first installment in a planned series of spiritual music from around the globe; curated, compiled and distributed by Luaka Bop.

Εφέτος συμπληρώνονται 100 χρόνια από τη γέννηση της Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996) κι έτσι, στην Αμερική πρώτα-πρώτα, θα ξετυλιχτούν, ανάμεσα σε άλλα, και τα σχετικά δισκογραφικά tributes. Εδώ, στο “Comes Love / A tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass” [River Lily, 2017], η τραγουδίστρια Patrice Williamson συνεργάζεται με τον κιθαρίστα Jon Wheatley σ’ ένα άλμπουμ με ξεκάθαρο μήνυμα. Οι καλλιτέχνες φιλοδοξούν ν’ αναπαραστήσουν, και το καταφέρνουν, τα ντούο τής Ella Fitzgerald με τον Joe Pass, που αποτυπώθηκαν στην επίσημη δισκογραφία τους. Αναφερόμαστε βασικά στα LP “Take Love Easy” [Pablo, 1974], “Fitzgerald & Pass...Again” [Pablo, 1976], “Speak Love” [Pablo, 1983] και “Easy Living” [Pablo, 1986] – άλμπουμ που βρίσκουν με το παρόν “Comes Love” μια κάποια αισθητική συνέχειά τους.

Με ρεπερτόριο που εν πολλοίς αποτελούσε μέρος των παραστάσεων τής Fitzgerald, στάνταρντ βασικά από το αμερικανικό και όχι μόνο songbook (“Lush life”, “Bluesette”, “Comes love”, “Take love easy”, “I want to talk about you”, “One note samba” κ.λπ.), οι Williamson και Wheatley δείχνουν πως ξέρουν πολύ καλά τη δουλειά τους, καθώς η απόπειρα αναμέτρησής τους με την ίδια την ιστορία δεν τους ακυρώνει. Ειδικώς η προσέγγιση του Wheatley είναι άψογη, κατορθώνοντας να δημιουργήσει με την κιθάρα του όλην εκείνη τη σειρά των ακόρντων, πάνω στα οποία θα πατήσει η «ευλύγιστη» φωνή της Williamson – η οποία, πέραν της τραγουδιστικής απόδοσης των στίχων, επιδίδεται και σε scat (“I may be wrong”) με ιδιαίτερη, μάλιστα, επιτυχία. Εννοείται πως η φωνή τής Fitzgerald, και ο τρόπος με τον οποίον άρθρωνε τις λέξεις και τόνιζε τα νοήματα, δεν αναπαράγεται, αλλά από την άλλη μπορεί να αναπαραχθεί ένα ανάλογο αίσθημα απλότητας και φιλικότητας σ’ ένα πρώτο επίπεδο – καθότι στην πραγματικότητα η δυσκολία τέτοιου τύπου εγχειρημάτων είναι μεγάλη (εννοώ πως δεν είναι εύκολο να βρεθούν όλα εκείνα τα κοινά μονοπάτια κιθάρας και φωνής, μέσω των οποίων θα υποστηριχθεί το τραγούδι).

Διαθέτοντας, λοιπόν, ένα ρυθμικό υπόβαθρο που κρατάει γερά, η Williamson έχει ένα ρόλο σαφώς πιο εύκολο για να εκπληρώσει… και το πράττει.

Bill Graham s Fillmore East Last Three Nights, featuring major artists; Albert King, J. Geils Band, Edgare Winter, Mountain, the Beach Boys, Allman Brothers Band & Country Joe McDonald, June 1971. The Fillmore East opened in Manhattan in March 1968. Over the next three years it hosted almost every major rock artist of the era, as well as giants of soul, blues, folk, gospel and jazz. Bill Graham decided to close it in June 1971, but before doing so he assembled a remarkable 3-day bill featuring some of the most iconic and influential acts in America, spanning pop (the Beach Boys), blues (Albert King), rock n roll (the J. Geils Band, Edgar Winter, Mountain, the Allman Brothers Band) and folk (Country Joe McDonald a nod towards the venue s psychedelic roots). Presented here is the the entire WNEW-FM broadcast of these historic closing shows.
