John Mellencamp – Sad Clowns & Hillbillies (2017)

Sad Clowns & Hillbillies was recorded in Nashville … but not that Nashville. John Mellencamp’s latest outing was forged at his own Belmont Mall studio in Nashville, Indiana, the spot outside of Bloomington that’s been his musical headquarters for decades. He did, however, team up with Music City royalty on the record: Carlene Carter, daughter of country legends Carl Smith and June Carter, and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash. Mellencamp developed a rapport with Carter while working with her on projects like 2012’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County musical and the soundtrack for the 2015 film Ithaca, as well as sharing a tour.
Sad Clowns isn’t specifically a duets album — some songs feature either Mellencamp or Carter alone in the spotlight, and the material is a mix of songs penned by Mellencamp and Carter, as well as some covers. But Carter’s deep country roots are a constant presence, even on tracks where she doesn’t appear. The pair originally envisioned the album as a collection of spiritual country tunes, and while that idea mostly fell by the wayside, a few tracks from that concept (“Battle of Angels,” “Damascus Road,” “My Soul’s Got Wings”) seem to have survived.
Of course, Mellencamp doesn’t need any outside influences in order to keep things rootsy. The man whose formative influences include Woody Guthrie (the source of one of Sad Clowns’ songs) is coming off a string of earthy, acoustic-based albums produced by roots impresario T-Bone Burnett, and Mellencamp’s mid-’80s shift to a more roots-rock oriented sound was the most significant stylistic move of his career. This predominantly acoustic album is simply the next foot forward in a direction the heartland hero’s been heading for a long time.
Like his songwriting, Mellencamp’s instrument has matured over the years. With a lifetime’s worth of smoke in his lungs, Mellencamp, now 65, delivers the songs on Sad Clowns in a soulful rasp alternately suggestive of Tom Waits and latter-day Bob Dylan. The nooks and crannies his voice has gained over the years only aid in achieving the same level of been-around-the-block gravitas found in Mellencamp’s lyrics here.

Rob(u)rang – Ofò (2016)
Contrasting directions from techno to modern tribal, the Rob(u)rang project deals in experimentation, repetition, and the use of rhythm boxes. Gabriel Séverin initiated Rob(u)rang in 2000, but has only released handful of albums since.
Here, Séverin draws his inspiration from yorùbá spells (collected in Nigeria and Benin) initially designed to cure diseases or solve problems.
The results resemble raw Afro-rock full of lively percussion (warming up the chill of drum machines) led by a possessed, trance-inducing voice. Now and then, lighter moments and dub-like surprises pop up, pleasantly cooling things down before entering the next entranced state.
On this recording Séverin is assisted by a few multi-instrumentalist friends: Xavier Klaine…
…(Winter Family) on organs, Alain Lefebvre (Digital Dance, The Durutti Column, Tuxedomoon) on percussion, Quentin Hanon (aka Johnny Superglu, Fan Club Orchestra) on bass and guitar, Gil Mortio (Joy As A Toy, collaborator of Pierre Vervloesem) on bass and guitar, Laurène Laroche (Babelouze) on flute, and Céline Mouffe on clarinet.
Gabriel Séverin (born 1963) is a founder and member of a string of bands including Ultraphonist, Babils, Dead Hollywood Stars, Jardin d’Usure, Logatomistes, Moonsanto, Silk Saw, and more. Séverin explores several musical styles and various artistic disciplines. He is fascinated by obscure avant-gardes (in 2009 he released Soliloques, an album of his own interpretations of raw literature and writers like Henri Michaux).

Best of The Beat on Afropop: The Jazz Epistles–Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela
We originally intended this “Best of The Beat” to coincide with the upcoming historic reunion concert at New York’s Town Hall April 27 featuring South African music icons Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela celebrating their original Jazz Epistles group founded in 1959. Unfortunately, Masekela was hospitalized last week and cannot travel from South Africa to make the date. (See an update on the new concert lineup here.) Of course that does not diminish the relevance of his position in music history, and so this BOTB goes on with a look at the two veterans from Vol. 7, 1988. At the time of this feature, published three years before apartheid was abolished in 1991, the struggle was continuing in full force.
We have an appreciation of the great pianist and composer Ibrahim, (also known in his early days as Dollar Brand); and a brief, belligerent statement from the outspoken Masekela, expressing his disgust with the apartheid system. Both artists were in exile from South Africa during the regime: Masekela from 1961 and Ibrahim, 1976.
As a bonus sidebar, we include a 1999 review by Ron Sakolsky of a compilation album titled Freedom Blues: South African Jazz Under Apartheid, that outlines the back story from which Ibrahim and Masekela emanated, and discusses the significant part played by South African jazz during the half-century of resistance to apartheid rule.
The anthology includes tracks from the the Jazz Epistles, along with other contemporaneous groups, including the Blue Notes and Chris McGregor’s ensembles. The album is quite likely out of print, but certainly worth the search.

Juliana Hatfield – Pussycat (2017)

Like many Americans, Juliana Hatfield has been deeply affected by the current presidential administration — just take a look at her Twitter account — and she’s poured those feelings into her music. The result is a new album, Pussycat, which was recorded during a whirlwind 12-and-a-half day stretch. She produced and played every instrument besides the drums on the LP, which will receive release on April 28th via American Laundromat Records.
As our first taste of the new album, Hatfield has shared its lead single, “Impossible Song”. The idealistic track, which you can hear below, calls for reason in these “contentious times” and asks listeners to find “a little some little thing in common to agree on.”
“We will all probably, at some point, someday, find ourselves depending on the kindness of strangers,” Hatfield explains to PopMatters. “I would hope that if some guy whose politics I hate keels over in the middle of the street in front of me, I’d rush to help pull him to safety before he gets run over. And if a guy who doesn’t believe what I believe walks by a burning building and sees me trapped inside, I hope he’ll try to rescue me.”
