King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard just dropped their LP Flying Microtonal Banana in February, but the band is already gearing up for their next project. Their forthcoming album Murder of the Universe is out June 23 via ATO.

“We’re living in dystopian times that are pretty scary and it’s hard not to reflect that in our music,” frontman Stu Mackenzie said in a statement. “It’s almost unavoidable. Some scientists predict that the downfall of humanity is just as likely to come at the hands of Artificial Intelligence, as it is war or viruses or climate change. But these are fascinating times too. Human beings are visual creatures – vision is our primary instinct, and this is very much a visual, descriptive, bleak record. While the tone is definitely apocalyptic, it is not necessarily purely a mirror of the current state of humanity. It’s about new non-linear narratives.”

Η Μαρία Λατσίνου είναι κατ’ αρχάς μία πολύ καλή τραγουδίστρια, με γερή, καθαρή και εύπλαστη φωνή. Αν και οι επιρροές της φαίνεται να είναι περισσότερο «έντεχνες», παρά τζαζ, αυτοσχεδιαστικές, βοκαλιστικές κ.λπ., εντούτοις το τραγούδισμά της δεν είναι το αναμενόμενο. Διαθέτει, θέλω να πω, και αιχμές, «ακρότητες» ας τις πούμε, και μια κάποια θεατρικότητα, που βοηθάει περισσότερο στην κατανόηση των κειμένων (των στίχων εννοώ). Αυτό, και σε συνδυασμό με το ηχόχρωμα της φωνής της, την κάνουν ξεχωριστή. Το έχουμε πει πάλι αυτό, καθότι η Λατσίνου έχει την πορεία της στα πράγματα (από Socos And The Live Project Band κ.λπ.), έχοντας ήδη κι ένα προσωπικό, αρκετά ενδιαφέρον, CD.

Στο παρόν «Μια Ανάσα Μετά / Live @ ΙΛΙΟΝ plus» [Puzzlemusik, 2017] (live στο ΙΛΙΟΝ plus την 3η Απριλίου 2016), η Λατσίνου ερμηνεύει τέσσερα τραγούδια του Χρήστου Αλεξόπουλου και τρεις διασκευές, ενώ υπάρχουν και δύο μικρά στο χρόνο αυτοσχεδιαστικά ορχηστρικά (το δεύτερο λειτουργεί και ως «ευκαιρία», ώστε να αναφερθούν οι μουσικοί) στηριγμένα πάνω σε θέματα τού Αλεξόπουλου.

Το βασικό όργανο, που δίνει στίγμα στο άλμπουμ, είναι η κρητική λύρα με συμπαθητικές χορδές του Γιώργου Ανδρουλάκη (ενώ ακολουθούν το ακορντεόν της Βάσως Μιχαηλίδου και τα πλήκτρα του συνθέτη), χωρίς τούτο να σημαίνει πως τα κομμάτια του Αλεξόπουλου καταχωρίζονται στα «παραδοσιακά» ή έστω στα «κάπως παραδοσιακά». Πρόκειται, βασικά, για σύγχρονα τραγούδια μιας κάποιας δραματικής αφήγησης, που ενορχηστρώνονται κοντά σ’ ένα avant/cabaret στυλ, ανακαλώντας στη μνήμη μου μιαν ιδέα των τραγουδιών της Dagmar Krause (και το λέω τούτο παρά το γεγονός πως όλα τα κομμάτια δεν είναι «ίδια» μεταξύ τους). Σε κάθε περίπτωση η Λατσίνου αποδεικνύει πως μπορεί να κινηθεί με άνεση σ’ αυτά τα… όχι καθημερινά μονοπάτια, σφραγίζοντας τα τραγούδια με την ερμηνευτική προσωπικότητά της. 
Το ίδιο, δε, θα έλεγα και για τις διασκευές. Το «Ο χρόνος δεν με αφορά», που το θυμήθηκα (καθώς το άκουγα από τη Λατσίνου) από τον συνθέτη του Αντώνη Λιβιεράτο και το άλμπουμ του «Το Πλαστικό Κουτί» (2000), το «Η γυναίκα που διάβαζε ποιήματα» από το «Έγινε Η Απώλεια Συνήθειά Μας» (1996) των Διάφανων Κρίνων και το παραδοσιακό «Νανούρισμα Σμύρνης (Μαργαριταρένια)». Ειδικώς αυτό το τελευταίο εκεί στο τέλος είναι και η έκπληξη του άλμπουμ. Η Λατσίνου δίνει μιαν ερμηνεία αναφοράς (όσον αφορά στη σύγχρονη απόδοση ενός παλαιού σκοπού), με την ενοργάνωση –ακορντεόν σε ρόλο «ίσο», λύρα σε πιο ελεύθερο πλαίσιο και από κοντά οι φωνές της Άννας Δακουρού και της Βάσως Μιχαηλίδου σε haunted αρμονίες– να αποδεικνύεται μαγική.

Να μια ωραία ιδέα, για μια συνέχεια…
