Dan Fogelberg – Live At Carnegie Hall (2017)

If James Taylor epitomized the definition and the original, late-’60s incarnation of the term singer/songwriter, Dan Fogelberg exemplified the late-’70s equivalent of that term at its most highly developed and successful, with a string of platinum-selling albums and singles into the early ’80s and a long career afterward, interrupted only by a health crisis that led to his untimely death in 2007. He came out of a musical family, born Daniel Grayling Fogelberg on August 13, 1951, in Peoria, IL, where his father was an established musician, teacher, and bandleader. His first instrument was the piano, which he took to well enough, and music mattered to him more than the sports that were the preoccupation of most of the boys around him. At age ten, he was saving and listening to any old records he could find. And if there’s a “God-shaped space” in everyone, Fogelberg’s was filled with music, something his family might’ve guessed if they’d seen how much he loved the music in church but was bored by the sermons. His other great passions were drawing and painting. His personal musical turning point came in the early ’60s, before he’d reached his teens. A gift of an old Hawaiian guitar from his grandfather introduced him to the instrument that would soon supplant the piano, and at age 12, he heard the Beatles for the first time, which not only led him to a revelation about how electric guitars could sound, but also made him notice for the first time the act of songwriting as something central to what musicians did. It was also at that point that he began picking up on the music of Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Buddy Holly, all of whom were, of course, in the Beatles’ repertory.

Crystal Sloan 1952-2017

The Afropop family has lost a longtime behind-the-scenes player. Back in the mid-’80s in Boston, Crystal Sloan taught me how to present myself as a software technical writer, though I had had no experience with computers prior to that. The money I earned funded my first trips to Africa. And when I transitioned to working mainly with Afropop Worldwide, Crystal advised us on key decisions through four generations of our website, afropop.org.

A star student at MIT in the ’70s, having worked on the software for the space shuttle, and moving on to an illustrious career as a software developer and consultant, Crystal always kept on top of rapid changes in technology. This remained true even after health issues forced her to move to a remote, rural location in Tennessee, away from all sources of air pollution.

As a software/Web advisor, Crystal was meticulous, detail-oriented and cautious to a fault. We did not always heed her advice, and sometimes regretted it. But mostly, we did listen and were the better off for it. We were very sorry to hear of her passing on May 8. We will miss her laughter and humor, her stern warnings and her guiding wisdom.

Alhousseini Anivolla first came to us with the Niger-based Tuareg guitar band Etran Finatawa. This, his second solo album, was recorded in North Wales with producer/bass player Colin Bass, a veteran of many fine global music projects over the years. Bass guitar aside, Anivolla plays and sings everything here, creating the illusion of a finely tuned, highly disciplined combo. The result is elegant blends of acoustic and electric guitars, often three at once, hand percussion and Anivolla’s deep, grainy voice commanding center stage, mostly alone, with hypnotic, chant-like melodies.

The sparseness of the soundscape creates a sense of ease and levity, but the subjects Anivolla sings about are profound. Preoccupation with the Tuareg people’s woes, especially since the messy rebellion of 2012-13 in northern Mali, is ever present. The CD notes observe that 400,000 people remain in refugee camps in the aftermath of that still simmering conflict. But these are not political songs. They call for something at once deeper and more practical than “independence.” The recurring theme is that people have forgotten or lost their identity and culture, and need to unify to overcome divisive quarrels. These are themes you might hear from any number of other Tuareg bands—Tinariwen, Tamikrest, Terakaft—but the difference here is that the perspective feels personal. These are ruminations, not of a clan or a band, but of one person, a wanderer, a nomad, a “walking man,” as Anivolla titled his first solo album.

Rarely have such weighty expressions of desperation, frustration and anger felt so gentle. The opener “Tamejaradetin” plays as ambling acoustic guitar folk, with a plea that people “speak the truth…honest as the morning light.” Picking up the pace and thickening the sound with clean electric guitar melodies, “Chet Azawad” namechecks the desert region that was briefly the name of an independent territory in northern Mali. But the words here don’t express an aspiration to reclaim Azawad as a nation, rather the pain and confusion that prevails in its place today. “Osas (It’s Time)” rolls in 12/8 time and a minor key with Anivolla almost speaking as he calls for peace and “laws to protect us.”

There are wistful notes of regret and reflection as in the slow, meditative “Idinite,” which questions whether “we” might have “ourselves to blame for what we are experiencing.” The energetic closer “Toumast Enkere,” with its tinde drum and calabash drive and its long concluding guitar jam, goes further with a scold to people who are “gullible” and “blind,” allowing themselves to be lured into conflict and division.

Recording without a band from the remove of a studio in the U.K., Anivolla might risk too much distance from his subject. But solitude seems to focus him. After all, separation is the central fact of nomadism. In the end, this album succeeds because the artist has such a deep need to say what’s on his mind, and knows exactly how to do it, without any need of artifice or reinvention.

Road Hammers – The Squeeze (2017)

320 kbps | 102 MB | LINKS

The highest-selling Canadian country band in history, The Road Hammers, are gearing up to release a brand-new record, The Squeeze. The new album is a collection of tracks that epitomize what the band has become known for – a truly synergistic blend of classic rock meets country, with a contemporary twist.

The Road Hammers (comprised of Jason McCoy, Clayton Bellamy, and Chris Byrne) collaborated to write many of the tracks on The Squeeze, which is a unique set of foot-stomping tracks one can’t help but dance to, evocative of the south. From the heart-warming sentiment behind the lead single, “Crazy About You”, which is about continuing to fall in love with long time partners as the years go on, inspired by McCoy’s own marriage; to “The Squeeze”, an up-tempo song co-written with Nashville writer Andrew Petroff and Chris Byrne about ensuring love is good to the last drop – it’s clear that passion for music and love are central themes to the album.

Co-produced by Gavin Brown (Metric, Tragically Hip and Barenaked Ladies), Scott Baggett (Alison Krauss, Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt), Jason McCoy and David Kalmusky, The Squeeze brings forward a new personal side of The Road Hammers. Much like previous records, it reflects the band’s love of wheels on the open road, combined with their softer side, highlighted in a cover of the classic Dawes song, “All Your Favourite Bands”, which showcases Clayton Bellamy’s vocals. This record also forges into new terrain, into the realities of life and love through the fun, Road Hammers lens, without the sugarcoating.

"I might not know who you are, but I know who I am.”
And things could be no different, when someone who sings these words is someone who has always perceived Fado to be her destiny, but who was only able to openly admit it after she truly understood who she was.
In 2009, Carminho sang "Fado". This was her fado, the one she owned since an early age, when she listened to her parents’ records, when she witnessed the gathering of fado singers in her own house and when, still a teenager, she began to sing in the Taverna do Embuçado. This "Fado" was the title of her first album, which was one of the most awaited albums in the new generation of fado singers: for those who had already heard Carminho, her talent was obvious, but they had to wait – until she finished her graduation, until she travelled the world, until she knew who she really was.
And her "Fado" became one of the most acclaimed albums in 2009. It went Platinum – an enviable outcome for a debut album. With "Fado", Portugal surrendered to Carminho’s voice and the doors of the world opened to her talent. It was considered best album 2011 by Songlines magazine, she had shows in European capital cities, in Womex 2011 (Copenhagen) and in the UNESCO headquarters, in Paris, within the scope of Fado as World Heritage candidate. Then came the invitation to participate in Pablo Alborán’s album, which became a phenomenon of popularity in both Portugal and Spain.
It was about time that “Fado” had a worthy successor. And it’s just around the corner. On 5th March, Carminho reveals her "Alma" (Portuguese word for soul) with 15 new songs, an album again produced and directed by Diogo Clemente, again wisely combining cover versions and originals (in the special edition, the album has 17 songs and a DVD with Carminho live in concertin May 2011 at Lux Frágil, Lisbon.
The cover versions are less evident. Some not so well known songs by Amália ("Cabeça de Vento"), Dina do Carmo ("À Beira do Cais") or Fernanda Maria ("As Pedras da Minha Rua"), but also from Chico Buarque ("Meu Namorado", de "O Grande Circo Místico") or Vinicius de Moraes ("Saudades do Brasil em Portugal"). The original songs are by Diogo Clemente ("Bom Dia, Amor", about poet Fernando Pessoa), Mário Pacheco ("Talvez", lyrics by Vasco Graça Moura), and Vitorino ("Fado Adeus"). And there are also some new lyrics for traditional fado tunes – one of them, "Folha", written by Carminho herself, and another one, "Impressão Digital", a poem by António Gedeão.
And it is this mixture of past and present that allows us to unveil the future of Fado, in the unrivalled voice of Carminho. A voice which, in her second album, sustains all that Carminho sings in "Talvez": "I might not know who you are, but I know who I am”.
