Although we often think of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s bossa nova material as a kind of jazz, it isn’t really, although he was familiar with the genre and often used its inflections and moods. With this album, however, Jobim definitely becomes jazzy. Guitarist Mario Adnet set out to do two things – keep the Brazilian roots of the music faithfully intact, but also give jazz arrangements, including horns, to the pieces, some of which have rarely been heard. He’s succeeded beautifully in both aims. His charts capture the subtle melodies and gorgeous sprung rhythms, but offer a full sound, with room for improvisation. Kudos, too, to the band, who play superbly throughout, while the singing is understated (even that of Joyce on "Paulo Voo Livre"), keeping the focus firmly on the instrumentalists. Adnet is obviously a scholar of Jobim’s work, and a passionate fan, with a deep desire to bring more people to Jobim’s music, and to highlight the jazz elements in it. It becomes more than an academic exercise, and the lulling, often beautiful sound is filled with little inventions that propel it along.

A singer and songwriter gifted with a strong, clear voice, Jillian Edwards was born in Dallas, Texas in 1989. Edwards developed a passion for music in her teens, and began her performing career when she was a student at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, singing at local coffeehouses and landing a spot opening for the Civil Wars shortly before the duo’s career took off. In 2009, Edwards took her career to the next level by recording a six-song EP, Galaxies and Such, which was soon followed by the eight-song Songbird, both of which she released herself. The response was encouraging enough that in 2011 Edwards moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and cut a second EP, the seven-song Headfirst, which she once again released herself. Edwards stepped up her touring schedule, headlining at house concerts and small venues and playing larger stages opening for the likes of Drew & Ellie Holcomb, David Ramirez, Ben Rector, and Josh Garrels. Headfirst eventually rose to the top of the digital singer/songwriter charts, knocking her old friends the Civil Wars out of the number one spot in the process. In 2012, Edwards married another talented musician, Will Franklin Chapman of the group Colony House, and they launched a side project called the Inlaws that also featured Will’s brother Caleb Chapman. In 2013, Edwards was invited by Ellie Holcomb to co-write a track for Holcomb’s album With You Now, and later contributed vocals to the project; Edwards also performed backing vocals on Deep Roots, an album of bluegrass tunes by Steven Curtis Chapman (Will and Caleb’s dad). In 2014, Edwards returned to the spotlight with her first full-length album, Daydream, produced by Joe Causey. ~ Mark Deming

Singer/songwriter Ramón Melendi Espina was born in 1979 in Oviedo, Spain. When their son was still quite young, Melendi’s parents decided that he was not a born student, and so allowed him to turn his focus to other things such as soccer and music. He spent much of his youth hanging out in the streets of Oviedo, learning "lessons that they don’t teach in school." In 2001, Melendi joined the band El Bosque de Sherwood (Sherwood Forest), which inspired him to record a few of his own songs solo. He went into the studio with three songs, "Sin Noticias de Holanda," "Vuelvo a Traficar," and "El Informe Forense." In 2002, through a good friend, Melendi’s three-song demo ended up in the hands of Carlito Records’ Javier Valiño, who enthusiastically signed him shortly thereafter. In February of 2003, Sin Noticias de Holanda was released, featuring 12 songs, all of them Melendi’s compositions. The disc’s release was followed by a short national tour, and by 2004 Melendi was appearing in the Top 100 on the national charts. The record went gold a short time later. Melendi’s second disc, Que el Cielo Espere Sentao, was released in 2005, the same year that he celebrated the birth of his first daughter, Carlota. Melendi continued to tour, and his third album, entitled Mientras No Cueste Trabajo, was released in 2006. Two years later the Spanish pop-crooner released his fourth record Curiosa la Cara de tu Padre, produced by fellow countryman José de Castro which included hit single “Un Violinista en Tu Tejado”. Melendi returned in 2010 with his rock-orientated album Volvamos a Empezar and stepped away from his popular rumba inspired pop. This new approach continued with 2012’s Lágrimas Desordenadas and 2014’s critically acclaimed Un Alumno Más, the latter highly regarded as one of Melendi’s most honest, mature and forthright pieces of work. In 2015, he released the live Directo a Septiembre and was awarded the Premio de la Música as well as several other awards from musical media stations Cadena Cien and 40 Principales.

Lovers of Latin rhythms, fasten your seatbelts: Monica Vasconcelos is about to lead you on a journey taking in traditional samba and bossa nova, through smoky, late night Latin ballads to funky, contemporary jazz.
Monica is assisted in this by an eclectic ensemble of international musicians who have worked and grown with her since she first came to London from Sao Paulo. They call themselves Nois (a Brazilian colloquialism meaning ‘Us’) and include percussionist Chris Wells and piano star Steve Lodder, a member of John Etheridge’s Frank Zappa covers project and a longtime collaborator with Andy Sheppard.
But enough of the credentials, the music speaks for itself. And ‘speak’ is the operative word; Monica’s sweet, sensual and sometimes husky vocal talks everyone’s language, even if you don’t understand a word of Brazilian Portuguese. Indeed when she sings in English (notably on her cheeky cover of Bobby McFerrin’s "Thinking About your Body" complete with Hammond organ and funky percussion) the melodious vowel sounds of her Brazilian accent somehow bring the meaning of the English words into sharper relief. The instruments speak to you too; the cello-vocal duet on "You" could warm the coldest of hearts.
This is Nois’s third album, and its diversity and polished delivery are testament to a group of musicians who have worked closely together for years. Most of the tracks are written by Monica and one or more of her band members, with a handful of well chosen covers including an irresistibly groovy version of Edu Lobos’ "Arrastao" (listen carefully for the plainsong-like male backing vocals!) and Roberto Carlos’ sultry "Detalhes".
This is a charming album, which transports you from Sao Paolo bar to beach and back again. Close your eyes and turn up the central heating… –Suzanne Hutson

Yomil y El Dany is a Cuban reggaeton duo comprised of Roberto Hidalgo Puentes (Yomil) and Daniel Munoz (El Dany). Hidalgo was a mechanic and Muñoz a medical student, both were veterans of the island nation’s vibrant reggaeton scene. They initially got together as DpuntoD, and achieved moderate success in clubs and on social media, but split in 2011. When they reunited officially in 2015, they differentiated themselves with a much more aggressive approach: integrating their gritty, pumped-up urban sound with trap, electronic, American reggaeton, and rap, called "trapton." Their first single, "Tengo," was a remix of Nicki Minaj’s "Truffle Butter." It stormed club charts in Cuba and Miami. Dozens of videos followed, enlarging their social media footprint. Their debut album, Doping, was released later in the year and featured the singles "Rikabery" and "Estamos Ta’ Po.’ Their sophomore long-player, Sobredosis, was issued in May of the following year and in summer hit the Top Latin Albums chart.

According to the press release, Justin Currie lives in Glasgow, collects beer mats and makes his own cushions. Of course, the PR company weren’t to know that Currie’s ‘Always The Last To Know’ was one of the formative songs of my childhood when he was then fronting Del Amitri so he’s a little more than cushion making Glasgow dweller to me. The new single from Currie, ahead of a new album, is the intriguingly titled ‘This Is My Kingdom Now’ which comes with a strikingly odd and unnerving video. The soulful acoustic strum is met by Currie’s distinctively gravelled voice and smooth delivery and the subtle click of a snare rim to keep us in time. There’s a bleak, funereal feel to this tune but with the optimism of someone who’s about to end it all and, with it, end all the pain they’ve been living for as long as they can remember. This is shit or get off the pot music where you decide to roll over and give up or stand up and fight. There’s a trumpet solo and an element of resolution to the song but that video is might weird.

Potions and Poisons (available May 12th) is the fourth studio album of original music from Head for the Hills, the Colorado based post-modern bluegrass outfit of Adam Kinghorn, Joe Lessard, Matt Loewen and Sam Parks. There’s no reinvention of the wheel here–no computer programmed banjo rolls or digitally arpeggiated fiddle lines. Instead we find Head for the Hills at the peak of their powers of musical alchemy, building little worlds of sound from the detritus of bluegrass, jazz, hip hop, folk and soul. Potions and Poisons is a look at the darker side of love, lust, and life; an examination of our affinity for and aversion to the things that make us fragile but human. Recorded at home in Colorado with the band’s go-to engineer, Aaron Youngberg (Cahalen and Eli, Martha Scanlan, Grant Gordy and Ross Martin), the record features appearances from Bonnie Paine (Elephant Revival) on vocals and washboard, Erin Youngberg (Uncle Earl, FY5) on vocals, and a lush string section. Potions and Poisons is the most Head for the Hills record yet, and in the great tradition of bluegrass (and soul and folk and old time music), it delivers some bitter pills, but the ten new original songs are more than a survey of the human condition. This is reflective but buoyant music, restorative and full of vibrancy.

Singer-songwriter Lowri Evans and guitarist Lee Mason have been performing and recording together for ten years. To mark this occasion, they are releasing a ‘live’ album on their own Shimi Records label. It features songs from Lowri’s debut Welsh-language album ‘Clyw Sibrydion’ (2006) through to last year’s ‘Everyone is from somewhere else’ (2016), six albums and four EPs later.
Whereas the studio albums feature an impressive roster of musicians, here the material is presented just as the two would perform it on stage: “No extra musicians, gimmicks or overdubs.” For the first time, musical partner Lee is given equal billing on an album, which showcases his sympathetic guitar playing and subtle harmonies. The pared down approach highlights the strength of Lowri’s songwriting and her clear soulful voice. The title alludes to the range of influences, including folk, country and blues, which makes for a varied bilingual set of songs. The album provides a career retrospective treat for fans and a great introduction to newcomers yet to discover this sublime music.
The set comprises two tracks from the debut album, a couple from ‘One way ticket’ (2009), three from ‘Corner of my eye’ (2013) and three from last year’s album, plus a brace of covers: Meic Steven’s reflective ‘Cân Walter’ and the bluesy Jimmy Cox classic ‘Nobody knows you when you’re down and out’. The record concludes with ‘Merch y myny’, the opening track of the first record Lowri and Lee recorded together, and a song played as an encore the last time this reviewer saw them live; it’s about life in their hometown of Newport, Pembrokeshire.

Oscar Castro-Neves has been one of the most important Brazilian musicians on the jazz scene for some time. His skills as a guitarist, vocalist, composer, and arranger are all on display in this release. Starting with a swinging instrumental setting of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s "Double Rainbow," which incorporates Charlie Bisharat’s Gypsy-like violin, Gary Meek’s multiple reeds, and pianist Don Grusin, Castro-Neves signals that this is not going to be a predictable release. His compositions include the funky, strutting "All One" and the infectious "Holding with an Open Hand." The surprising rendition of "’Round Midnight" begins dramatically, then suddenly turns into a lively upbeat bossa nova. Equally compelling are his arrangements of standards like "The Very Thought of You" and "There Will Never Be Another You," both of which feature his warm, friendly vocals. The only disappointment is the inclusion of smooth jazzer Michael Franks’ lightweight, monotonous "One Bad Habit" to close an otherwise flawless CD. ~ Ken Dryden
