Tupelo, Mississippi’s Paul Thorn was a prizefighter and skydiver before becoming a rootsy singer/songwriter. As a boxer Thorn once fought against Roberto Duran, and as a musician he has toured and collaborated with Sting, Paul Carrack, Joe Diffie, Tanya Tucker, Ronnie Milsap, and Carole King, to name a scant few. Thorn is the son of a Pentecostal preacher; gospel music was in his blood from birth and has remained a lifelong passion. Music wasn’t his first choice as a profession, however; boxing was. He fought professionally in the 1980s. After retiring, he embraced music, but continued to pay the rent with a day job — until music entrepreneur and manager Miles Copeland heard him play a show in a Tupelo pizzeria. Copeland signed him to A&M. His debut album, Hammer and Nail, was issued in 1997. Thorn moved to Copeland’s Ark 21 for 1999’s Ain’t Love Strange. A formidable guitarist, Thorn decided to showcase his chops and the rock & roll side of his roots music on the celebrated Mission Temple Fire Works Stand in 2002. His took on the weighty subject of love for 2004’s Are You with Me?, using a more stripped-down style of production and R&B-based grooves to illustrate his material. Thorn took a four-year break from recording, though he still gigged — if not incessantly, then abundantly — in the United States and Europe. When he did return, on 2008’s A Long Way from Tupelo, he’d melded all of his previous explorations holistically into a resonant Americana with his gritty, expressive, soulful voice atop it all. In 2010 he released the humorously yet poignantly titled Pimps and Preachers on his own Perpetual Obscurity label, and followed it in 2012 with his first all-covers collection, What the Hell Is Goin’ On?; the album featured Thorn’s versions of tunes by Rick Danko, Allen Toussaint, Donnie Fritts, Lindsey Buckingham, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and others. Thorn returned with a strong album of originals, Too Blessed to Be Stressed, in 2014.

Blay Ambolley – Ketan (2017)

The Legendary Gyedu Blay Ambolley from Ghana, West Africa and his Sekondi Band has 29 music albums to his credit. “Ketan” is his number 30.
Ambolley was born in the city of Sekondi-Takoradi (an area called Ketan), in the Western Region of Ghana, in West Africa. The multi-talented, International, Ghanaian Musician celebrated his “Silver Jubilee” in music in 1998.
Ambolley taught himself to play the flute as a first instrument in his early years of musical interest dating back to the age of eight, when he began playing with his father’s flute. The young music enthusiast continued to learn the rudiments of music from the late’ Sammy Lartey and Ebo Taylor. During the sixties, the young aspiring musician was impressed with the music he heard on the popular radio show, “Voice of America Jazz Hour.” That sixties show featured such jazz giants as Jimmy Smith, Max Roach, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Eckstie… all of whom became part of Ambolley’s early musical experience.
This versatile, irrepressible singer, songwriter, producer and “musical- life-force” exploded on the music scene in 1973 with a jazzy highlife sound called ‘SIMIGWA-DO’.
He has toured throughout West Africa, Europe, Canada, and the United States and has performed on the same stage with some of the world’s most celebrated artistes such as; Miriam Makeba of South Afrika, the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti of Nigeria, the late George Howard, Angela Bofill, Norman Connors, Manu Dibango, Lakeside, Chikuzan Takahashi of Japan, Ricardo Estrada of Cuba, Mayuto Correa of Brazil and toured Ghana with Oscar Brashear and Michael Session.
The celebrated musician has received numerous prestigious awards, for example a lifetime achievement award and Inducted into the music hall of fame by Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in California and an award from the Board of Supervisors and the City Council of the State of California for bridging the gap between Africa and African American music. He also received a lifetime achievement award at the Ghana Music Awards in 2013.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has crafted the ability to combine a unique sound and melody with funny lyrics and dancing to his music as is well documented that “the genre of his music is entertainingly elevating and spiritually inescapable”, such that its uniqueness transcends all musical categories.

From the very beginning, Thandiswa Mazwai has always managed to be at the forefront of change. Born in the rural homeland of Transkei, she grew up in Soweto during the ’80s, as part of the "Soweto generation," who witnessed the violent dismantling of apartheid and the growth of a free South Africa. The daughter of journalists, she was constantly surrounded by banned books, writing, and political discourse. This would eventually prove to be an important element in the singer’s songwriting and political awareness. After earning a B.A. in international relations and English, Thandiswa put all her church and school choir experience to use and made her professional debut 1993 at the Market Theatre in a production called SA Love. Shortly after, she was singing background for the soon to be groundbreaking group Bongo Maffin. She was invited to join as lead singer in 1997, and that’s when all the changes for South African music began. Hailed as the sound of "new South Africa," Bongo Maffin were one of the first group’s to perform kwaito, a purely South African mixture of hip-hop, reggae, and house music flavored with South African sensibilities and dialects. What made Bongo Maffin stand out were Thandiswa’s politically conscious lyrics and rich, expressive vocals. The trio became the most popular group in South Africa, releasing five albums and performing all over the world. In 2004, the tenth anniversary of South African freedom, Thandiswa again stepped into the forefront of change. Although still a member of Bongo Maffin, she released her solo album Zabalaza. A stunning collection of soulful, genre-bending songs, the album documents a contemporary African identity. Traveling to her rural birthplace, Thandiswa married the traditional harmonies of Xhosa chants and instruments with modern kwaito, gospel, and jazz sounds. The album electrified Africa, Europe, and Japan and earned her a cavalcade of awards, including a Kora 2004 award for Best Female Artist, and 2005 SA Music Awards for Best African Contemporary Album and Best Female Artist. Hailed as the new generation’s Miriam Makeba, Thandiswa signed with an American label in late 2004 and plans tour on her own and with Bongo Maffin in support of their anticipated album.

ΣΠΥΡΟΣ ΚΟΥΡΚΟΥΝΑΚΗΣ – ΜΙΧΑΛΗΣ ΜΠΟΥΡΜΠΟΥΛΗΣ το «έντεχνο» επιμένει
Για τον στιχουργό Μιχάλη Μπουρμπούλη δεν χρειάζεται να πούμε τίποτα ιδιαίτερο –όσον αφορά στο παρελθόν του– καθώς δικά του είναι μερικά από τα σημαντικότερα τραγούδια μας τα τελευταία 40+ χρόνια. Για τον συνθέτη, όμως, Σπύρο Κουρκουνάκη αξίζει να πούμε κάτι. Πως η καριέρα του (και η δισκογραφική) μετράει και αυτού 40 χρόνια –κάποια δισκάκια στην εταιρεία Liberta το 1977-78, στα οποία τραγουδούσαν συνθέσεις του βασικά ο Τάκης Κωνσταντακόπουλος και ο Νίκος Δημητράτος– κάνοντας, ανά διαστήματα πιο αισθητή την παρουσία του με ολοκληρωμένα άλμπουμ, μα ακόμη και με βιβλία [«Το παραμύθι της Ευτυχίας (Παπαγιαννοπούλου)» στον Ιανό, το 2010]. Εδώ, έχουμε το πιο καινούριο CD του Κουρκουνάκη (σε στίχους Μπουρμπούλη), που έχει τίτλο «Σσστ!... μας κοιτάζει η κάμερα» [Μετρονόμος, 2017] και στο οποίο τραγουδούν πολλοί (Κώστας Μάντζιος, Γεωργία Γρηγοριάδου, Λευτέρης Τσακιράκης, Αλέξανδρος Εμμανουηλίδης, Βασίλης Αθανασόπουλος, Λάκης Χαλκιάς, Παντελής Θαλασσινός). Τι τραγουδούν; «Έντεχνα» ελληνικά τραγούδια.

Ο Κουρκουνάκης γράφει ωραίες μελωδίες και όταν αυτές οι μελωδίες συναντούν τα πιο φιλοσοφικά/ερωτικά λόγια του Μπουρμπούλη, τότε προκύπτουν αληθινά όμορφα τραγούδια, όπως τα «Οι αγάπες μες στις πόλεις» (Μάντζιος) και «Δεκαπενταύγουστος» (Γρηγοριάδου). Πολύ ωραία είναι επίσης τα «Ο πατέρας μου ο άντρας» (ξανά με τον Μάντζιο) και «Νανούρισμα» (με τον Θαλασσινό). Υπάρχουν όμως και τραγούδια, που δεν κυλάνε πάντα με την ίδια άνεση και αυτά είναι –συμπτωματικά;– κάποια από τα κοινωνικοπολιτικά, που ακούγονται στο άλμπουμ. Επίσης θα πω κάτι, που το λέω σχεδόν πάντα σ’ αυτές τις περιπτώσεις. Οι 7 διαφορετικοί τραγουδιστές δεν βοηθούν στο να εμφανίσει το CD μια συγκεκριμένη ταυτότητα. Οι πολλές φωνές, θέλω να πω, αποσυμπιέζουν το τελικό αποτέλεσμα.
Πολύ ενδιαφέρουσες, τέλος, είναι οι ενορχηστρώσεις. Ενώ υπάρχει μπουζούκι στην ορχήστρα (ας το πούμε έτσι), είναι άλλα τα έγχορδα που έχουν πιο κυρίαρχο ρόλο (οι κιθάρες, ακουστική, κλασική και 12χορδη, το μαντολίνο, ο μπαγλαμάς, ο τζουράς). Επίσης το κοντραμπάσο του Θανάση Σοφρά χτίζει με γνώση όλο το ρυθμικό υπόβαθρο, που δεν είναι αμελητέο (μέχρι και blues κάπου ακούμε).
Γενικά, το «Σσστ!... μας κοιτάζει η κάμερα» είναι ένα ενδιαφέρον άλμπουμ, στο οποίο ο φίλος τού «έντεχνου» θα βρει μερικά πολύ καλά τραγούδια.
