Magic Bus – Phillip The Egg (2017)

These uplifting words come from Mystical Mountain, the opening song of Phillip the Egg, the mystifyingly titled third release by Magic Bus. They sum up the positive and joyful atmosphere of the album as this talented band take us on another musical Astral journey. With a band name derived from Tom Wolfe’s book The Electric Kool-Aid Test, about Ken Kesey’s counter culture ‘Merry Pranksters’ who travelled ’60s America in a psychedelically painted bus called ‘Further’, also known as ‘The Magic Bus’, it is inevitable that this is a band that unashamedly basks on the sunlit hills of the hippy idyll with musical and lyrical inspirations drawn from that era. Phillip the Egg gloriously continues along that path, but this time Magic Bus take it on to greater heights with a more expansive and vibrant approach.
Mystical Mountain typifies this development as it commences in a vein reminiscent of their previous Caravan/‘Canterbury’ inspired 2014 album, the fine Transmissions from Sogmore’s Garden, tripping along whimsically with mellifluous guitars, lovely harmony vocals and short flute swoops. However, just when you think it’s over it then takes off in a whole new direction with an extended instrumental second part. A simple guitar riff is built on by bass, drums and a soft flute as it rises in tempo and volume, perhaps akin to ascending a mountain, before we reach a simple piano plateau which leads to a further rising simple guitar, bass and subtle drum passage – and then Magic Bus really start to raise the musical power. Jay Darlington’s sinuous work on the organ and Terence Waldstadt’s scintillating guitar play off each other as the band dramatically reaches the peak of the Mystical Mountain – Viv Goodwin-Darke’s flute floating off into the distance like a bird released. For an opening song it certainly sets out Magic Bus’s more ambitious stall and indicates that this is an album which reveals their more progressive rock influences, conveying more of the energy and power of their impressive live sets.

If Uncle Tupelo were the Minutemen of the alt-country explosion of the ’80s and ’90s, then Slobberbone were the Replacements. Uncle Tupelo were tight, wildly energetic, and overflowing with both ideas and principle. But Slobberbone were sloppy in the best kind of way, charging forward with beer-sodden passion that obscured the fact they could effectively kick out the jams.
Slobberbone were not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves, bellowing out tales of regular-guy lives that were often funny but also potently insightful. While they weren’t taken as seriously as some bands on the scene, they played and sang with a commitment that suggested their lives depended on this music. And like the ‘Mats, Slobberbone were in the right place at the wrong time. In a very real way, Slobberbone paved the way for the Drive-By Truckers, Lucero, and Two Cow Garage, but without enjoying the same recognition by being a few years early.
In their original lifetime, Slobberbone cut two good albums (Crow Pot Pie and Slippage) and two great ones (Barrel Chested and Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today). Bees and Seas: The Best of Slobberbone is a well-curated compilation that skims the cream from those four releases, and beautifully celebrates their greasy glories. These 18 songs demonstrate the consistent strength and shaggy-dog vision of Brent Best’s songwriting, confirming he was as good a storyteller as anyone on the scene. And on the best tracks, Best and his bandmates (Jess Barr, Brian Lane, and Tony Harper) explode like soggy firecrackers, giving the music messy but furious life. While Slobberbone have reunited for live dates, they have yet to return to the recording studio. Bees and Seas suggests they would have good cause to be intimidated by the strength of their legacy. But after hearing this, old fans and first-time samplers alike will probably think the same thing: the world needs more rock from a band like this. Until that day comes, Bees and Seas is a superb summary of Slobberbone’s brief but rich recording career. (The collection also includes a loving liner-note tribute to the group from Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers.)

Όταν ο ηπειρώτης κλαρινίστας ΤΑΣΟΣ ΧΑΛΚΙΑΣ άφησε άφωνο τον αμερικάνο συνάδελφό του, της τζαζ, Benny Goodman, στη Νέα Υόρκη στα μέσα του ’60
Δεν μπορώ να θυμηθώ πότε άκουσα για πρώτη φορά το κλαρίνο του Τάσου Χαλκιά (1914-1992). Μπορεί στους τίτλους αρχής της «Αναπαράστασης» (1970) του Θόδωρου Αγγελόπουλου, μπορεί σε κάποιο δίσκο του Γιάννη Μαρκόπουλου («Ο Στράτης Θαλασσινός ανάμεσα στους αγάπανθους... και άλλα τραγούδια» του 1973, «Οι Ελεύθεροι Πολιορκημένοι» του 1977), μπορεί και κάπου αλλού. Το σημειώνω, γιατί όσοι δεν μεγαλώσαμε αναγκαστικά με τα δημοτικά τραγούδια και με τους κορυφαίους σολίστες τους, το πράξαμε κάποια στιγμή στην πορεία και από σπόντα. Γιατί πάντα θα υπάρχουν οι «σπόντες», που θα μας πηγαίνουν παρακάτω.

Τώρα, καθώς προσπαθώ να πιέσω τη μνήμη μου για να θυμηθώ, μπορεί να ήταν και το ροκ, το ελληνικό ροκ εννοώ, εκείνο που με οδήγησε να ανακαλύψω τον Τάσο Χαλκιά. Ο Σαββόπουλος π.χ., που είχε καλεσμένο τον Χαλκιά στο Κύτταρο το 1972, μα ακόμη και ο Γιάννης Σπάθας (από τους Socrates), που από παλιά δήλωνε σε συνεντεύξεις του πως ο Χαλκιάς είχε υπάρξει μία από τις μεγαλύτερες επιρροές του. Εξάλλου το κλαρίνο του Χαλκιά ήταν εκείνο που προσπαθούσε να μεταφέρει στην κιθάρα του ο Σπάθας σε κομμάτια όπως το “Mountains” και σε άλλα διάφορα (πιο πριν).
Όπως είχε πει ο ίδιος ο ηπειρώτης κλαρινίστας στο μνημειώδες βιβλίο τού Αντρέα Χρονόπουλου «Θύμησες και Σημειώσεις Τάσου Χαλκιά» [Απόπειρα, 1985]:
«Νέους ανθρώπους γνώρισα όταν κάποτε ήρθε και μου μίλησε ο Διονύσης Σαββόπουλος. Άνοιγε ένα μαγαζί κι ήρθε, με βρήκε και μου είπε:
– Χαλκιά σε θέλω να ’ρθεις στο μαγαζί. Θα κάνουμε έναρξη την τάδε του μήνα.
Με ευχαρίστησε η προτίμησή του, αλλά δεν πίστευα ότι θα πέρναγε η δική μου εργασία μέσα στον κόσμο, όπου τα είχε αυτός. Ήτανε άλλος ο κόσμος του και συγκεκριμένα του είπα – επί λέξει:
– Ποιος να με καταλάβει από αυτούς τους ακούρευτους κι αξύριστους;
Μου συνέχισε τότε ο Σαββόπουλος:
– Εσένα δε σ’ ενδιαφέρει κύριε Χαλκιά. Μόνο να ’ρθεις να μιλήσουμε και να συμφωνήσουμε.
Όντως, επήγα. Συμφωνήσαμε κι έπαιξα δυο χρόνια. Ερχότανε αλήθεια αυτή η νεολαία, αυτοί όλοι που ονόμασα ακούρευτους, μαλλιάδες και αξύριστους και δε με άφηναν να φύγω από την πίστα. Με αγαπούσαν αυτά τα παιδιά. Έπρεπε να γυρίσω το λιγότερο δυο φορές απ’ τα καλέσματά τους για να τους παίξω λίγο ακόμη και να φύγω.(…) Αυτά τα παιδιά μου ’δωσαν μεγάλη ζωή. Μ’ αγαπήσανε πάρα πολύ κι όπου πήγαινα κατόπιν, σε εκδηλώσεις, έρχονταν να με δουν».
– Χαλκιά σε θέλω να ’ρθεις στο μαγαζί. Θα κάνουμε έναρξη την τάδε του μήνα.
