Music Videos From Cape Verde
We touched down in Cape Verde last month for the Atlantic Music Expo, a yearly gathering of music professionals which provides an opportunity for local and international artists to showcase their talents. We report on some of the brilliant Cape Verdean artists we met there on this week’s show, “We Are All Creole: The Atlantic Sound of Cape Verde,” from the traditional batuque sound of Tradison di Terra to the conscious hip-hop of rappers such as Helio Batalha. To give you a taste of their style and culture, we put together this compilation of colorful music videos by some of the artists featured in the program.
Elida Almeida – “Bersu d’Oru”
Helio Batalha – “Txora pa Dentu ft. Sté”
Kiddye Bonz – Anda Ne Chuva
BigZ Patronato – Maria

“We Are All Creole”: The Atlantic Sound of Cape Verde
Cape Verde, land of the the playful coladeira, the entrancing batuque, the high-energy funaná, and of course the sensual morna that Cesaria Évora helped bring to the world. At the intersection of Africa, Europe, and the Americas, Cape Verde’s creole identity is reflected in the richness of its musical output, one which continues to uphold traditions while maintaining a youthful energy and demonstrating an open-mindedness fitting for an archipelago whose diaspora outnumbers its inhabitants. In this program, we travel to Cape Verde’s capital, Praia, for the Atlantic Music Expo, a yearly gathering of music professionals and local and international artists. As the city center bursts with live music, we check in on some of the most exciting sounds coming out of Cape Verde right now, hearing from talented young singer-songwriters such as Elida Almeida and Lucibela; rappers Helio Batalha, Kiddye Bonz, and BigZ Patronato; traditional batuque ensemble Tradison di Terra; and many more.

Left Lane Cruiser – Claw Machine Wizard (2017)
320 kbps | 102 MB | LINKS
Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Left Lane Cruiser has built a solid reputation as an undeniable force of rhythm and raw energy over the last decade. You can hear the band in action on “Claw Machine Wizard”, the title track from the duo’s upcoming LP, due May 19 from Alive Records. A blast of pure, furnace-hot energy, the tune bridges the distance between hill country blues and Black Sabbath. Drummer Pete Dio’s playing recalls the powerful, responsive (and jazz-inflected) work of Sabbath’s Bill Ward. Meanwhile, guitarist/vocalist Freddy J Evans IV reminds us that both blues and heavy rock took long crawls from the back streets to the main street, tracking layers of soulful grit in along the way.
Daniel Romano – Modern Pressure (2017)
320 kbps | 106 MB | LINKS
Modern Pressure is Daniel Romano’s ambitious and surprising new album, twelve tracks that boldly ask “What age is this? What blooming weight do we carry?”. Written in observational scrutiny beneath the overcast atmosphere of 2016, the record vigorously tackles the present-day heaviness we contain in the jotting bones of our guilty expressions. It pleads for the restoration of empathy and resonance, to fill the empty chamber once again.
In this chamber, Romano’s voice leads as a lantern. Prolific and resourceful as ever, the recording phase took place in a minimalistic cabin in secluded Finnsäs, Sweden over the month of August 2016 (with additional string and horn players being added at Baldwin Street Sound in Toronto, ON in October, 2016). Engineered by long-time collaborator Kenneth Meehan, the fevered pace of work lent itself to the unrestrained and undeviated nature of the songs themselves.

Los Straitjackets – What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Los Straitjackets (2017)
320 kbps | 102 MB | LINKS
It’s safe to say that after three tours supporting iconic U.K. singer-songwriter Nick Lowe, no other band knows his compositions as intimately as this veteran Nashville-bred quartet. America’s favorite Mexican wrestling masked surf/twang/pop and roots-rocking instrumental combo was encouraged by Lowe himself to totally rethink these 13 songs they cover from his deep catalog on their 16th studio release.
Since Los Straitjackets never played by any rulebook other than the one they wrote, this was a logical assignment. Most of the selections originate from early in Nick Lowe’s solo career, with “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding” dating back to Lowe’s short early ’70s stint with U.K. pub rockers Brinsley Schwarz. But the foursome also tackles “Checkout Time” from Lowe’s most recent (2011) studio set which they recreate in a knowingly cheesy, samba style that maintains the melodic lines of the original.
It helps if you are already a Nick Lowe follower but even for those unfamiliar with his recordings, this is a fun frolic that will send you back to the source to see what you missed. From the opening retro surf-rocking of “Shake and Pop” to the heavy rockabilly/twang of Lowe’s power-popping “Heart of the City” and the ready for a soundtrack take on “I Read a Lot,” Los Straitjackets pull out the stops and check off each of the genres they adhere to within the baker’s dozen set. “Cruel to Be Kind,” Lowe’s biggest solo hit, is transformed into a romantic ’60s slow dance and “I Live on a Battlefield” gets the Surfaris/Ventures treatment in a roaring, rollicking performance impossible not to dance to. The group also digs deep into Lowe’s catalog to extract some dusty gems with the reverb-drenched “You Inspire Me” and the mid-tempo strumming “Lately I’ve Let Things Slide.”
Established Lowe and/or Straitjacket fans will lap this up since it not only pays tribute to his often overlooked pop gems, but reinvigorates them in idiosyncratic versions most wouldn’t expect. As a bonus, founding Straitjackets member Danny Amis returns from an illness sabbatical, bringing a third guitar to the mix. And to add more authenticity, it’s produced by Neil Brockbank who has worked with Lowe on his previous six releases. Lowe’s 12-year-old son also makes an appearance on percussion.
Los Straitjackets have always explored new twists on their sound, which included adding various vocalists, recording a full disc of twisting nuggets and covering classic tunes that have influenced them over the decades. This is just one more related side trip in the band’s tenure and, as usual, they rip into it with typical vibrancy, rearranging Lowe’s material so creatively, these sound like Los Straitjackets originals. Imaginative cover art referencing Lowe’s 1978 debut puts the cherry on top of an inspired, lyric free homage to the “Jesus of cool.”
Nordisk Sang
"This diamond of a recording gives the listener a rare and intimate look at the genuine folk music of Scandinavia, away from the festivals, the hype, and the fusions. Here are the willow bark flutes, the pristine voices, and the fiddles (both hardingfele and standard) of Norway, usually in solo settings, or simple call and responses between an instrument and a voice. Central to the proceedings is singer Kirsten Bråten Berg, a singer of such pure tone and ethereal spaces that the ear swoons upon hearing it. Lesser-known but no less impressive is the voice of Pernille Anker. Hardingfele players Hallvard T. Bjørgum, Torliev Bolstad, and Gunnar Stubseid show the diverse capabilities of this drone fiddle. There are two pieces for transverse flute (one as a duo with a pipe organ that is quite unusual), one for solo dulcimer, and one for willow bark flute to round out the sounds of Norway. There are only two slightly larger ensemble pieces, one a trio for voice, saxophone, and hardingfele, another for voice, hardingfele, bouzouki (the illustrious Ale Möller), and recorder. All the tunes are original save for a beautiful solo fiddle piece by Hans Brimi. This is a worthy collection selected by the Norwegian Heilo label, and it offers a rare look inside the folk tradition." Louis Gibson

Runnin’ For the Ghost
With 11 upbeat jams, Big Mean Sound Machine has delivered an energetic but never obtrusive summer soundtrack. The 10-piece Ithaca, NY-based band’s fourth record, Runnin’ For the Ghost, flirts with genres ranging from soul to funk to Afrobeat to Ethiopian big band, while remaining steadfastly married to the groove.
Every track is anchored by flittering, relentless drums and rock-solid bass work. The horns swap solos and come together to wring out booming melodic lines, while the guitar pounds out a rhythm line like a typewriter, content with quick solos in the song’s back end.
It’s a forgiving and adaptable formula that, without ever being ethereal or spacey, neatly fits Brian Eno’s criteria for ambient music: It works no matter how much you pay attention to it. Put Runnin’ For the Ghost on in the background–you’ve got a steady beat and a solid soundtrack. Put it on and scrutinize every track, and the varied diet of influence that fed into the record comes into view.
You can hear the influence of their contemporary Afrobeat peers like the Souljazz Orchestra or Antibalas on “Seeing the Bigger Picture.” Late album stand-out “Sahara Cell Phones” slips Ethio-jazz over a reggae upbeat just long enough to catch the ear, and the song ends with someone leaving an answering machine message—a classic move even when Sonic Youth deployed it on 1988’s Daydream Nation, and one that’s gone mostly the way of the answering machine.
“Van Chatter” gives the guitars room to take center stage, filling the aural spectrum with swirling delay and pentatonic melodies. The result is somewhere between soukous, highlife, and the jazz fusion groups that revere those genres, like Snarky Puppy or the Heliocentrics. The foot only comes off the gas pedal briefly on “Hired Guns,” when the band slows to a strut.
The title track, “Runnin’ For the Ghost,” could be a track straight off Tortoise’s 2009 album, Beacons of Ancestorship, and the Chicago post-rock group has an interesting career arc to imagine Big Mean Sound Machine following. Big Mean Sound Machine are somewhere in that outre region of the musical landscape, where fellow instrumental groups like BadBadNotGood and Tortoise roam. Both of those bands started as rhythm sections or backing bands for hire and both of those groups have filled Rolodexes with compelling collaborators, ranging from rappers to indie rock crooners.
Big Mean Sound Machine is in the enviable position of having established a sound that fits in almost anywhere—it’ll be interesting to see what they do with this considerable potential.

Best of The Beat on Afropop: Oumou Sangare, Mali’s Nightingale
This week’s installment of “Best of The Beat” from 1997 features the Malian diva Oumou Sangare, who has just released her first album in eight years. [See Banning Eyre’s review of Mogoya here.]
A goddess among goddesses from the Wassoulu region, renowned for its strong tradition of women vocalists, Oumou emerged on the international scene in 1989, and rose to renown through a series of recordings and tours in the ‘90s. An outspoken campaigner for women’s rights (highly unusual in traditional African societies), she fearlessly delivered her messages against polygamy and inequality.
She told me: “When I sing, I have I have a message to say to the women—that they have to have courage, they have to get up, they have to choose a man who loves them and refuse to accept forced marriage, they can’t accept to be treated like a slave.”
In December 1995 I was given the privilege to get behind the scenes and watch one of Africa’s superstars and band at work. On tour with Oumou and her group for three days in the Netherlands, I was also invited to spend a day in the studio as World Circuit producer Nick Gold captured on tape the sounds that would become Oumou’s album, Worotan. I was in the studio when the haunting song, “Djorolen,” was cut; it still remains my favorite of all her compositions.
We invite you to enjoy the story of my experiences and observations on the road with Oumou and company, and excerpts from my conversation with her, translated from French.
