Prominent Michigan folk musician Chris Bathgate—who you may be familiar with from a number of his previous projects such as folk trip Ambitious Brothers or his 2007 debut album A Cork Tale Wake—is releasing his first full-length album since 2011 on Friday. Dizzy Seas is an eclectic collection of ambient folk rock like that of Sufjan Stevens or Justin Vernon.
According to a recent interview with Outline, Bathgate spent the past few years “hiking on both coasts, intermittently living in a cabin in the woods of southern Michigan.” His pilgrimage back to Mother Nature puts him into the same camp as contemporaries like Dave Simonett and even Kanye West. The result of his isolation became last years EP Old Factory and now his upcoming full length Dizzy Seas. The album is an exploration of hope and heartbreak, and over 10 tracks unfolds beautifully, moving from solitary reflection to a celebration of life and all its complications. What makes Bathgate’s take on this well-tread material, though, is how far removed Bathgate seems to be from what he’s singing about, as if he’s taken a step back from the world he inhabits, simultaneously celebrating and critiquing himself and the industry.

Jethro Tull – Songs From The Wood (The Country Set) [40th Anniversary Edition] (2017)

Songs From The Wood is often referred to as one of the most commercially appealing Jethro Tull albums, containing elements of rock, prog and folk-rock. Although media reaction at the time divided opinion, the album has certainly developed a nostalgic rapport with fans through the years and it is perceived today as one of the band’s most popular albums. Drummer Barrie Barlow comments that it sounds “Fresh, unique, great textures, interesting and dynamic!”, while guitarist Martin Barre remembers that “It was a very tight band, one of the strongest line-ups Tull ever had… I think that Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses [the follow up album] as a pair of albums are near the top of the tree”. The first disc of the set contains the Steven Wilson remix of the original studio album, accompanied by associated recordings. This includes the tracks “Old Aces Die Hard” and “Working John, Working Joe” which are being released here for the first time on any format. “Old Aces Die Hard”, a title Ian Anderson recently gave the track in a subtle nod to Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, is, according to Ian “an extraordinary find, because it’s a long piece, and quite evolved, and one that sounds like it is pretty much complete – it doesn’t sound as if it was waiting for me or anyone else in the band to go back and redo vocals or guitars or whatever.” CDs 2 and 3 in the box form 22 track live tracks, recorded on the Songs From The Wood Tour across two dates, Boston Garden, Boston, Massachusetts, USA on 6th December 1977 and Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland, USA on 21st November 1977. These tracks have been reconstructed as a complete set and then remixed to stereo by Jakko Jakszyk and are completely unheard.

Steve Earle – Live From Austin TX (2017)

In September 1986, Steve Earle’s first album was shaking up Nashville, and country music circles, like nobody else had done since Willie, Waylon and the original Outlaw gang. He was a skinny kid from San Antonio, Texas – the oldest of 5 kids whose Dad was an air traffic controller. He got his first acoustic guitar when he was 11 and listened to The Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Elvis, but he had an unquenchable thirst and curiosity about all kinds of music… and people. He was no doubt a rebel, running away from home several times to hit the road, playing honky tonks and bars wherever they would let him in. During these hitch-hiking and traveling days, he was befriended by the legendary Texas singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt, of whom Steve said, “He was a real good teacher and a real bad role model.” Steve left home for good at age 16 and moved to Nashville. This show, his first appearance on Austin City Limits, captures the excitement and free spirit of that first seminal album, “Guitar Town,” which was nothing less than a collection of personal odysseys. He was certainly a musical renegade from day one, and that’s one thing about him that hasn’t changed. This performance displays the vintage Steve Earle sound that paved the way for a new generation of country rockers willing to buck the Nashville system.
