JAZZ + ΠΡΑΞΕΙΣ στην ΠΑΤΡΑ 8-10 Ιουνίου
Το Jazz+ Πράξεις στην Πάτρα αποτελεί θεσμό, καθώς οργανώνεται συνεχώς από το 2004 (βρισκόμαστε δηλαδή στη 14η διοργάνωση), έχει για «ψυχή» του τον φίλο από 30ετίας και βασικό συνεργάτη στο Jazz & Τζαζ Γιάννη Μουγγολιά, ενώ είναι ενταγμένο στο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Πάτρας, το οποίο οργανώνει κι εφέτος ο Δήμος Πατρέων, έχοντας για μπροστάρη, κι αυτή τη χρονιά, τον κομμουνιστή Δήμαρχο Κώστα Πελετίδη (ο οποίος χαίρει με το έργο του της εκτίμησης όλων των Πατρινών). Γι’ αυτούς τους λόγους το δισκορυχείονστηρίζει το Jazz + Πράξεις, προβάλλοντας και τη φετινή διοργάνωση. Και αυτή τη φορά ο χώρος του Αιθρίου τού Παλαιού Δημοτικού Νοσοκομείου θα είναι το σημείο αναφοράς την Πέμπτη 8, την Παρασκευή 9 και το Σάββατο 10 Ιουνίου.

Το Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartetαποτελείται από τους Σωκράτη Σινόπουλο λύρα, Γιάννη Κυριμκυρίδη πιάνο, Δημήτρη Τσεκούρα κοντραμπάσο και Δημήτρη Εμμανουήλ ντραμς. Το Κουαρτέτο ξεκίνησε το 2011, δουλεύοντας αρχικά με διασκευές παραδοσιακών κομματιών, για να συνεχίσει σύντομα πάνω σε πρωτότυπες συνθέσεις τού Σινόπουλου. Αυτό το υλικό εκδόθηκε πρόπερσι στην ECM ως “Eight Winds” αποσπώντας εξαιρετικές κριτικές. Τον Σωκράτη Σινόπουλο τον έχουμε ακούσει –ζωντανά ή σε ηχογραφήσεις– να εμφανίζεται με τους Ross Daly, Ελένη Καραΐνδρου, Δόμνα Σαμίου, Ara Dinkjian, Charles Lloyd κ.ά., βάζοντας παντού τη δική του εκφραστική σφραγίδα, και μάλιστα σε ιδιώματα που καλύπτουν μιαν ευρύτατη γκάμα, από την παράδοση έως τη σύγχρονη δημιουργική μουσική.

Το μουσικό σχήμα In Duologue απαρτίζεται από την τραγουδίστρια Αλεξάνδρα Λέρτα και τον πατρινό κοντραμπασίστα Βασίλη Στεφανόπουλο, που ζει και δημιουργεί στην Ολλανδία. Κοντραμπάσο και φωνή σ’ έναν μουσικό διάλογο ικανό να «ταξιδέψει» τον ακροατή σε «τόπους» όχι πάντα προφανείς. Μαρτυρά γι’ αυτό το άλμπουμ τους “Blue Skies” που κυκλοφόρησε το 2014, όπως και το ευρύτερο ρεπερτόριο τού ντούο, που αποτελείται από συνθέσεις των Irving Berlin, Chano Pozo, Duke Ellington, Richard Rogers-Lorenz Hart κ.ά.

Οι Dinosaur, που εμφανίζονται αποκλειστικά και μόνο στο Jazz + Πράξεις 2017, είναι ένα από τα πιο δημιουργικά τζαζ σχήματα στην Ευρώπη σήμερα. Με leader την τρομπετίστα και συνθέτιδα Laura Jurd (κατέκτησε τον τίτλο BBC New Generation Artist 2015-2017), τον Elliot Galvin στα πλήκτρα και τους Conor Chaplin-Corrie Dick σε μπάσο-ντραμς, οι Dinosaur κυκλοφόρησαν, το 2016, το άλμπουμ “Together, As One” στην Edition Records, τυγχάνοντας ευρείας αναγνώρισης.

Η μουσική τους στηρίζεται οπωσδήποτε στα πλήκτρα (fender rhodes, synths), βεβαίως στην τρομπέτα, μα ακόμη και στο ξεχωριστό rhythm section, φέρνοντας στη μνήμη μεγάλες στιγμές του παρελθόντος (ηλεκτρικός Miles, Nucleus/ Ιan Carr, Soft Machine, King Crimson, Mwandishi κ.λπ.).
Μετά από έξι σχεδόν χρόνια περιοδειών (Βερολίνο, Τουλούζη, Δουβλίνο, Βρέμη κ.ά.), οι Dinosaur είναι έτοιμοι να συνεχίσουν τη λαμπρή διεθνή καριέρα τους. Να υπενθυμίσουμε, απλώς, πως έχει συνεργαστεί με γίγαντες της τζαζ (Gil Evans, Gato Barbieri, Carla Bley, Roswell Rudd, Marion Brown, Rashied Ali, Cecil Taylor, Charlie Haden, John Abercombie, Paolo Fresu, Stefano Bollani, Miroslav Vitous, Richard Galliano, J.F. Jenny-Clark, Misha Mengelberg, Dino Saluzzi, Lee Konitz, Pat Metheny, Charlie Mariano, Joe Henderson, Ran Blake, Paul Motian κ.ά.), πως έχει παίξει σε περιοδείες και κοντσέρτα σε ΗΠΑ, Ιαπωνία, Καναδά, Βραζιλία, Αργεντινή, Κίνα και φυσικά στην Ευρώπη, ενώ έχει υπάρξει μέλος σημαντικότατων ορχηστών (The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, Carla Bley Jazz Composers Orchestra, Globe Unity Orchestra, Italian Instabile Orchestra κ.λπ.), έχοντας ηχογραφήσει πάνω από 100 δίσκους.
Ο Rava ως αρχηγός ενός σχήματος, το οποίο συναποτελούν νεώτεροι, αλλά άσσοι μουσικοί, δηλώνει πάντα ανοιχτός σε μιαν ευρύτατη γκάμα τζαζ τεχνοτροπιών, καθώς αυτό πράττει από την αρχή της καριέρας του, όταν είχε βρεθεί δίπλα στους Gato Barbieriκαι Steve Lacyστα μέσα του ’60.

Transatlantic dialogue takes a new twist on this collaboration between a Sierra Leonean thumb pianist and a North American DJ. It’s a heartening story. Sorie Kondi is a blind street musician from Freetown, a one-man band with few assets beyond a string of cassette releases and a website, which is where DJ Chief Boima came across him.
A remix of Sorie’s “Without Money, No Family” ensued and led to this collaboration. Boima’s touch is light, adding discreet beats to Sorie’s tumbling melodies and rich voice, finding parallels between West African folk and US house. The songs are tough social cameos, the mood infectious.

En El alma de Puerto Rico, su segunda grabación con Smithsonian Folkways, Ecos de Borinquen presenta una variedad de géneros tradicionales como el seis, aguinaldo y la cadena, que son considerados la esencia misma de la música jíbara. La música jíbara suge de la población campesina de la isla, nacida de la mezcla racial entre europeos, indígenas taínos (habitants precolombinos) y africanos, formando un fenotipo mestizo con un gran componente racial de origen andaluz, canario, extremeño, sefardita, morisco y castellano. Los instrumentos musicales reproducían a sus ancestros de la península ibérica y Canarias, desarrollándose la construcción de instrumentos propios como cuatros, tiples, bordonúuhoihuois, guitarras y el nativo güiro, idiófono raspador construido con un fruto de la isla. La música jíbara se compone de varios estilos musicales, denominados seis y aguinaldos. Los versadores en rima, principalmente en décimas y decimillas fijas o improvisadas, son una característica en el tipo de expresión vocal. Las danzas, que incluían zapateados y una representación coreográfica, eran parte de fiestas patronales, celebraciones navideñas y fiestas para conmemorar el "acabe", nombre que se le daba al fin de la temporada de la cosecha. La música también era parte de la vida cotidiana de la población jíbara. El canto acompañaba el trabajo en el campo, las labores domésticas, las actividades de entretenimiento y la narración de cuentos e historias.
El nombre Ecos de Borinquen procede de un programa de radio que Miguel Santiago Díaz inauguró en 1978 en la estación WViAc 740 AM, y que todavía está en el aire en la WQbs 870 AM. El programa tenía como propósito dar mayor exposición pública a la música jíbara la cual, según Miguel Santiago, tiene una presencia limitada en las ondas radiales nacionales. Dos años más tarde, Miguel incorporó el grupo Ecos de Borinquen como parte del programa para acompañar trovadores y cantantes invitados/as. Yezenia Cruz, quien canta en este álbum, fue una de las artistas jóvenes destacadas en el programa. Ahora, en la cúspide de su carrera, su voz poderosa y enérgica complementa la experimentada voz de Miguel Santiago en El alma de Puerto Rico.
La influencia de la música instrumental para cuatro es evidente en la interpretación de géneros tradicionales de la música jíbara. Especialmente en las interpretaciones en vivo, durante las secciones improvisadas de los seises y aguinaldos, los cuatristas con frecuencia utilizan escalas y acordes de jazz con una técnica impecable. En El alma de Puerto Rico, el cuatrista Cheo Delgado ofrece algunos solos jazzísticos a Nieves Quintero. Nieves Quintero, quien redefinió el arte de tocar el cuatro incorporando elementos de música popular latinoamericana (son, bolero, guaracha, danzón), jazz, blues y folclore latinoamericano (joropo llanero, milonga) dentro de los estilos jíbaros, ha sido influyente para músicos jíbaros como José "Cheo" Delgado y Ramón Vázquez Lamboy (director musical del grupo), quienes han usado el conocimiento legado por estos grandes maestros para crear un sonido único para el grupo, que los ha mantenido a la vanguardia de la música jíbara. En El alma de Puerto Rico son presentados Benjamín Laboy (segundo cuatro) y la trovadora Elsie Marie Díaz, estrellas en ascenso que ahora hacen parte de la familia de Ecos. Como continuación de una venerable tradición puertorriqueña, El alma de Puerto Rico representa una grabación inmejorable para las y los fans de la música jíbara y para cualquiera que guste de la música tradicional.

My Darling Clementine – Still Testifying (2017)

Husband and wife team, Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish – My Darling Clementine – continue to forge ahead with their celebration of the classic country duets of the sixties and seventies with their fourth album, Still Testifying, which is due out in June.
The album finds the duo moving away from the tear and beer stained country laments of the earlier albums as they acknowledge the Memphis soul roots that began to infuse much of late sixties country. They had touched on this earlier with their song Going Back To Memphis on their Reconciliation album and on Still Testifying they recall the “comeback” Elvis ’69 sessions with Chips Moman at the controls and while there’s still some pedal steel there’s also a horn section in the mix.
So as the pair are still bickering (as the press release has it, “Why don’t we form a band?” said the husband. “Why don’t you empty the dishwasher?” said the wife), King and Dalgleish take their adventure one step further and if you’ve been to any of their shows you’ll understand that they capture this element of marital tension, disharmony and low down loving brilliantly as they translate it into some wonderful songs. You can catch them in action as they embark on a series of dates to support the album’s release.
