If you love Moroccan Gnawa music, which you should, you’re probably going to enjoy this track, “Mystic Molay,” a tribute to the Sufi teacher Molay Abdelkader Jilani. The track is the lead single off a new record from veteran DJ/producer Nickodemus, and it features New York-based Gnawa master (maâlem) Hassan Ben Jaafer and his group Innov Gnawa, who have been making waves locally and nationally with their deep roots music. They even recently recorded and performed with British DJ and producer Bonobo. Nicodemus’ new track rides that wave:

“Mystic Molay” opens with a driving snare drum pattern and swinging claps, before the unmistakable sound of Maâlem Hassan Ben Jaafer’s melancholy voice and rolling two-string sintir/gimbri bass lines and melodies. Halfway through, the track breaks down, leaving a single violin melody. Nickodemus builds the music back up from there, adding elements until the full Gnawa groove returns, supported by a simple drum-set pattern, a four-on-the-floor kick and backbeat.

The single release includes two remixes: a clubby, house-tinged reworking by Aroop Roy, and a nice gimbri-centric mix from Umoja, that focuses on Ben Jaafer’s voice and makes great use of the krakeb or qarqaba metal castanets.

Look out for Nickodemus’ record, out October 2017 on Wonderwheel Recordings, and be sure to catch Innov Gnawa live in New York this summer, even this Fri., June 2, at National Sawdust with Tigue and Underground System.

The final recording by legendary jazz fusion pioneers Larry Coryell and Alphonse Mouton in the reformed the Eleventh House in their all new album Seven Secrets which will be released on June 2nd. The late guitarist Coryell assembled founding members Randy Brecker (trumpet), long-timer John Lee (bass), the addition of son Julian (guitar) and the late Alphonse Mouzon (drums) to bring the rock and funk back to jazz again with a batch of eleven powerhouse tracks. The album is truly a group effort with Coryell relying on each member to contribute compositions to the new album (much like he did back in the 70 s).

In January, he went into a studio in St. Augustine, Florida, and recorded a new Eleventh House project titled Seven Secrets (Savoy/429 Records) with charter members from 1973: Randy Brecker on trumpet and Alphonse Mouzon (1948 2016) on drums, along with John Lee (bassist on the group s 1975 album Level One and 1976 follow-up, Aspects) and Coryell s son Julian, a six-string shredder in his own right, on second guitar.

The results, which will be released in June, are electrifying. Fueled by Mouzon s big-as-a-house back-beats and power-precision fills, Daddy Coryell cuts loose with sheer abandon on several cuts, like his Mr. Miyake and Mouzon s kinetic 7/4 title track. Coryell deals in audacious string-bending on the blues-rocker The Dip and the earthy Mudhen Blues, and delivers some Wes Montgomery-style octaves on the mellow Having Second Thoughts.

But the real killer on Seven Secrets is Lee s Dragon s Way, a 6/8 romp that will whet the appetites of true fusion fans. Sparked by Mouzon s slamming groove and Lee s slippery, singing tones on his resounding Rob Allen fretless bass (with ebony fingerboard and nylon strings), this catchy number also showcases the young Julian s mondo chops, which are coming directly out of the Steve Vai Joe Satriani school. Papa Coryell follows those mind-blowing fusillades with something simple, lyrical, tasty and blue a typically Zen response from the guitar master. –Downbeat

Break The Chain brings twelve new MacLeod originals. Each song is extremely personal and at the same time, universal; covering subjects topical, humorous, and soulful; from the satirical to the sublime.

The album is co-produced by Doug MacLeod and Janice Mancuso. Bassist Denny Croy, drummer Jimi Bott and percussionist Oliver Brown join Doug in duo, trio and quartet settings. Like all ‘Prof.’ Johnson’s sessions, Break The Chain was recorded live, in real- time, with no overdubs or effects. It is being released on compact disc with HDCD, as high-resolution and conventional downloads and later, as a premium 2-LP set.

OmarWhen Syrian dabke singer Omar Souleyman began recording in studios rather than from stages, his music inevitably changed. 2015’s Wenu Wenu (produced by Kieran Hebden) was followed by 2016’s Bahdeni Nami (on Modeselektor’s Monkeytown) with Hebden, Gilles Peterson, and Legowelt all participating. Despite the modern production techniques, Souleyman’s hyper brand of dabke remained mostly intact. Until now, that is.
To Syria with Love signals a markedly different approach. While Souleyman’s longtime lyric collaborator Shawah Al Ahmad remains co-writer on these tunes, pitch wheel keyboard madman Rizan Sa’id, the architect of Souleyman’s trademark instrumental sound on over 500 records, is not. Those duties, along with arrangements, have…

    104 MB  320 ** FLAC

… been taken over by Hasan Alo of “Dilşad Diler” fame. Souleyman’s manager Mina Tosti is listed as the set’s producer.

The end result is a program of (mostly) medium-boil dabke and baladi, though singles “Ya Bnayya” and “Chobi” roil at noticeably higher temperatures. 21st century techno and electro provide the textural backdrops for these songs. While the difference between this and earlier recordings is jarring, the evolution was inevitable. Souleyman is no longer singing at weddings in Syrian cities and rural locales. He’s been an exile living in Turkey for several years, and most of his time is spent working in Europe playing for large crowds in clubs and at festivals.

His stacked beats and loops are best heard on tracks such as “Es Samra” (“The Brunette”). Its shimmering, sequenced intro is appended by an enormous double-time four-on-the-floor main rhythm, with pitch wheel synth pyrotechnics playing in call and response with Souleyman’s vocals. On “Khayen,” funky disco pulses are woven through the synthetic dabke beats. Souleyman is as passionate as ever, though, even as synth blips, squeals, and squelches erupt between his phrases with samples of electric guitars, saz, and ouds adding more exotic textures. The real beauty on this album, however, is found in the slower tracks — the forlorn “Mawal,” for example, which addresses Souleyman’s deep longing for home; it’s almost a moaning blues with the rabat adding a dirgey, elegiac feel. Closer “Chobi” is more uptempo with a rubbery synth bass added to the multi-layered percussion samples and razor-wire synth lines, but the sympathies are the same as Souleyman’s grainy baritone chants are delivered with a bottomless ache: “…Look upon us, O Lord/Our sadness is larger than mountains/We are in exile, and our nights are long/Our homeland is our/only comfort/We are in exile, and our nights are long/It’s hard to find comfort….” To Syria with Love was assembled with an eye toward expanding Souleyman’s audience. Given the production and the wide selection of textural palettes and tunes, it’s a good bet he’ll be successful. It will likely keep longtime listeners in the fold, too, although the raw, unhinged feel of his earlier recordings will be missed.

Danielle Egnew’s signature power-soul voice delivers moving storytelling in this hybrid Pop-Americana explosion. “You’ve Got to Go Back the Way That You Came” represents a three-year period launching Egnew into her next exhilarating phase of meaningful songwriting and rich production values where balancing the hum of a banjo against a full orchestral string section and a wailing choir is sometimes the only appropriate canvas for these allegorical yet everyday messages.
