In a consistently colorful musical career that spans nearly four decades, Willie Nilehas established a reputation as a world-class rock ’n’ roller, and as a singular songwriter with deep roots in rock’s rich history. So it’s not surprising that he’d choose to tip his hat to one of his most enduring musical inspirations with his eleventh studio album, Positively Bob: Willie Nile Sings Bob Dylan, a heartfelt, personally charged set of Dylan covers that honors its subject while exemplifying the same qualities that have distinguished Nile’s work since the beginning.
The album is set for June 23, 2017 release on River House Records.
“These songs opened up a lot of doors for me, and for a whole generation of kids,” Nile states. “Discovering Dylan’s songs in the ’60s was incredibly liberating; it made me realize that there were no limitations or walls that could not be scaled or knocked down. This is the Shakespeare of rock ’n’ roll we’re talkin’ about here.”
Dylan’s poetic genius and playful irreverence are prominent throughout Positively Bob, with Nile mining ten vintage Dylan compositions, with imaginative, uninhibited arrangements that often recast familiar songs in a fascinating new light. For example, he injects “Blowin’ in the Wind” with a shot of Ramones-style adrenaline, and turns “The Times They Are A-Changin’” into an insistent rock anthem, while “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” gets a loose, upbeat rock ’n’ roll treatment, “Subterranean Homesick Blues” is delivered with rootsy rockabilly fervor and “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” gets a down-home treatment that recalls the song’s Basement Tapes origins. Meanwhile, “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” retains its original apocalyptic urgency, while Nile applies a light, intimate touch to the timeless Dylan ballads “Love Minus Zero/No Limit,” “I Want You,” “Every Grain of Sand” and “Abandoned Love.”

Steve Young – Seven Bridges Road – The Complete Recordings (2017)

An expanded reissue for the late country music outsider’s second album. Recorded in Nashville with the cream of that city’s session men, the album was the follow-up to his debut, 1969’s ‘Rock Salt And Nails’. ‘Seven Bridges Road’ was released three times, with different track listings on each occasion. It initially came out in 1972 on Reprise, then again in 1973, with changes, on the small independent Blue Canyon label. It was released for the final time in 1981 on Rounder, with a new recording of the title track and yet more changes to the track list. We include all 19 tracks that came out on the various releases plus a special bonus of two tracks recorded as a Reprise single in 1970 in LA, with Ry Cooder co-producing and providing some vintage slide guitar and dobro.

Elephant Revival – Break In The Clouds (2010)

Hailing from Colarado, Elephant Revival is a collective of folk-inspired musicians led by Bridget Law’s vocals and fiddle, joined by a quartet of other musicians, including Dango Rose on bass and Daniel Rodriguez on guitars. Everybody sings, and everybody plays multiple instruments. All this activity amounts to a wide variety of lush, mostly-acoustic sounds, which veer from the country-bluegrass end of the spectrum (“Lexington”, “Break in the Clouds”) to moodier, bass-heavy tunes (“Cosmic Pulse”, “Drop”). If indie rock were played primarily on mandolin, cello, banjo, and octave violin, it might sound something like this.
That’s not to say that the songs are experimental or bizarre—guitar and vocals remain the focus of these songs, it’s just that the arrangements and instrumentation lend something refreshing to many of them. The fiddle on “Barefoot Friend” brings an alt-country vibe, while “Break in the Clouds” is reminiscent of a waltz. Most of all, what makes this record so successful—and it is very successful indeed—are the songs, which are solidly constructed and performed with conviction. At 14 tracks, the album loses momentum in its second half, but remains generally engaging nevertheless, and well worth a listen to anyone with a fondness for the “folk” element of “folk-rock”.
