Midnight North – Under The Lights (2017)
320 kbps | 102 MB | LINKS
Midnight North will release their second album, Under The Lights. Recorded by David Simon-Baker (Los Lobos, ALO, Jackie Greene, Mother Hips), the album is both a reverence of the collective musical canon of the past, and an offering of styles totally fresh and new, created by a band that is paving the way ahead for the future of Americana music. Above all, it’s superb collection of new material from this four-piece group, who are also hitting the road this summer to tour in support.
The album takes off at a sprint, with the title track “Under The Lights,” a real road song that starts things off on a modern country feel. Then come just about one of the best songs coming out today, “Playing a Poor Hand Well.” A little soulful, a little folky, a little danceable, and a beautiful blending of all the instruments in the band’s arsenal on this record: organ, with some great horn interplay. And, on top of it all, crooned passionately by singer Elliott Peck.
In fact, the whole record benefits from the beauty of multiple stellar voices, and the album is split on vocal lead duty track for between members Peck and lead guitar player, Grahame Lesh. Whereas Peck’s voice is husky but also sparkling at the peaks, Lesh’s is just as satisfying in his grittier style, and on tracks like “Back to California,” it cracks with exasperated emotion. Of course, to be found everywhere on the record is the expert level background harmonies that seem to just fit with any kind of song.

Isobel Anderson – Chalk / Flint (2017)
FLAC | 229 MB | LINKS
CHALK/FLINT demonstrates Isobel’s growing songwriting prowess. With developments in production and instrumentation, this is a vibrant new album from the Belfast-based artist.
The eleven-track album was written and recorded in Belfast, but inspired by Isobel’s childhood home, the jagged white cliffs of South East England’s coastline. The dense instrumental and vocal harmonies, alongside the textured soundscape composition is a nod to Isobel’s MA and PhD in Sound Art.
Manassas – Pieces (1971/2009)
FLAC | 309 MB | LINK
Pieces is the perfect name for this new Manassas outtakes collection from Rhino. Nobody had combined country, rock, salsa, blues, and bluegrass like Stephen Stills’ powerhouse 7-piece that formed out from the wake of CSNY and the Burrito Brothers, and their eponymous album was a disconnected smattering of “pieces” itself. This new hodgepodge of unheard treats may be scattered, but it’s right in line with tradition and kicks ass like any Manassas fan would expect.
Pieces collects some leftovers from the Miami sessions that led to the first album (“Witching Hour” “Like A Fox”), warmups and ideas intended for the 2nd Manassas album, Down The Road (“Lies” “Love and Satisfy”), as well as what Stills refers to as “Chris Hillman and Byron Berline teaching me bluegrass” (“Panhandle Rag” “Uncle Pen”). Other tracks are electrified covers from Stephen Stills 1 & 2, the hugely successful solo albums that gave Stephen the freedom to form a band with Doug Sahm level schizophrenia.
There are a number of gems here; “Witching Hour” and “Sugar Babe” are easy classics. Stills throws together the chorus of “Like a Fox” last minute and presages Manfred Mann’s “Fox On The Run” (which the Country Gentlemen would turn into a bluegrass standard) word for word. Only problem, even with Bonnie Raitt lending her voice, I can’t hear past the Manfred version to this one. On Side B, the bluegrass numbers have no knockout picking, but it’s a treat to hear Stills and Hillman harmonize on “Uncle Pen.” “Do You Remember The Americans,” however, is cooler grass than I’ve ever heard. I wish Stills had recorded an entire album in this vein. ”I Am My Brother” is a sick solo blues to prove Stills’ immense talent and soul.

The Orchestra Soledad – Vamonos / Let’s Go (2017)
320 kbps | 102 MB | LINKS
“Originally released in 1970 by little-known Chicago imprint Futuro, ‘Vamonos / Let’s Go!’ is the first and only album recorded by Brooklyn neighbourhood salsa band ‘The Orchestra Soledad’. Led by trombonist and singer Hector Ramos, the music of Orchestra Soledad is characterised by brash and energetic salsa arrangements created by Ramos himself, who also composed (or cocomposed) all of the music featured on the LP.
This ultra-rare record came to our attention courtesy of DJ Amir who discovered it (along with a ‘battle of the bands’ trophy that the band had won) in a shop located only blocks away from the Bushwick home of Hector Ramos. Immediately captivated by the striking artwork and incredible music, Amir went on to include the track “El Ritmo Soledad” on his 2016 BBE compilation ‘Buena Música Y Cultura’, an album celebrating latin music from across the Americas. The Orchestra Soledad was made up of talented local kids (maybe local heroes), all dreaming of Fania All-Stars fame when they stepped in the studio, sadly destined never to ‘make it’. Yet this one shining album remains, a lasting testament to their brilliance. Raw, authentic 70s street salsa, all the recordings featured on ‘Vamonos/ Let’s Go!’ have a distinctly live, unpolished feel, evoking all the sweat and drama of a hot summer’s night in the barrios of Sunset Park, Bushwick or Williamsburg back in the day.”
VA – Zaire 74: The African Artists (2017)
In the weeks before 1974’s legendary Rumble in the Jungle between Ali and Foreman, a three-day music festival in Kinshasa united major American R&B artists with their Congolese counterparts. Footage of James Brown and others has shown up on the documentaries When We Were Kings and Soul Power, but this lavish two-CD set is the first time we’ve heard the African performances.
You’re never far from the poisonous influence of Zaire’s military dictator Mobutu, whose authenticité campaign made him a fashionable figure in some Afrocentric circles (there are numerous “Mobutu praise songs”, even one from Miriam Makeba, the only non-Congolese artist here), but even this doesn’t dim the sheer joy of these performances. A loose-limbed set from local rumba hero…
…Franco and Le TPOK Jazz is the centrepiece; his rival Tabu Ley Rochereau provides a frenetic, guitar-heavy rumba-funk stew; Abumba Masikini flirts with acid rock; while Abumba’s sister Abeti mixes soukous with heavy metal. Thrilling stuff. — Guardian
