Pink Floyd – Obscured by Clouds [Remastered] (2016)

Obscured by Clouds is the soundtrack to the Barbet Schroeder film La Vallée, and it plays that way. Of course, it’s possible to make the argument that Pink Floyd’s music of the early ’70s usually played as mood music, similar to film music, but it had structure and a progression. Here, the instrumentals float pleasantly, filled with interesting textures, yet they never seem to have much of a purpose. Often, they seem quite tied to their time, either in their spaciness or in the pastoral folkiness, two qualities that are better brought out on the full-fledged songs interspersed throughout the record. Typified by “Burning Bridges” and “Wot’s…uh the Deal,” these songs explore some of the same musical ground as those on Atom Heart Mother and Meddle, yet they are more concise and have a stronger structure. But the real noteworthy numbers are the surprisingly heavy blues-rocker “The Gold It’s in The…,” which, as good as it is, is trumped by the stately, ominous “Childhood’s End” and the jaunty pop tune “Free Four,” two songs whose obsessions with life, death, and the past clearly point toward Dark Side of the Moon. (“Childhood’s End” also suggests Dark Side in its tone and arrangement.) As startlingly advanced as these last two songs are, they’re not enough to push the rest of Obscured by Clouds past seeming just like a soundtrack, yet these tunes, blended with the sensibility of Meddle, suggest what Pink Floyd was about to develop into.

Edgar Winter – Rebel Road (2008)

Since his debut album Entrance in 1970, Edgar Winter has always been a musical visionary, mixing and synthesizing the rock, blues and jazz melodies he hears in his head. The younger brother of guitar legend Johnny Winter, Edgar has been a prolific artist and worldwide superstar. From the mega-hit Frankenstein, to the bluesy classic Tobacco Road, Winter has never been a follower, just a true leader. With his latest release REBEL ROAD, Edgar Winter manages to rock pretty righteously. Beginning with the title Rebel Road, Eye On You, and the ultimate party hit The Power Of Positive Drinking, the band with the help of brother Johnny Winter moves in into the excellent blues scorcher Rockin’ The Blues. The album which is painted with highlights from the substantial saxophone & keyboard talents of Winter, not to mention some of his finest singing recalls the best of his work with the Edgar Winter Group. Like They Only Come Out At Night album, this recording includes a pair of haunting ballads, The Closer I Get and Peace And Love. Do It Again, along with Horns Of A Dilemma, showcase Edgar Winter doing what he does best – rocking out with passion and lots of drums and guitar.

Here Lies Man – Here Lies Man (2017)

Here Lies ManWhat is it with New York funk torch bearers Daptone Records and Black Sabbath? First Daptone luminaries The Budos Band set out to answer the question no one asked, “what if Sabbath were a funk band?” on 2014’s Burnt Offering (with surprisingly excellent results), then soul legend Charles Bradley had a late career hit with his cover of Sabbath’s ‘Changes’. And now Marcos Garcia of agitprop afrobeat collective Antibalas has gone rogue and put together Here Lies Man with a mission to answer another unasked question – “what if Black Sabbath played afrobeat?”.
…It’s been almost 40 years since Funkadelic asked the world, ‘Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock?’ and answered it themselves with some of the most far-reaching rock music of the 70s. It’s perhaps more strange that bringing funk or…

…afrobeat rhythms to rock music never really caught on as much as it perhaps ought to have. Several decades on and it’s still very much music meant for the mosh pit rather than the dance floor. The closest we have to a rock band playing these sorts rhythms now is Goat, but thankfully Here Lies Man have taken up the mantle to remind us all how potent the combination of big dumb guitars and non-traditional (in Western terms) rhythms can be. By comparison Goat sound like a fairly straight psych band playing dress up.

Their debut record has got enough groove to have been a Daptone record, but it’s such a fuzzed up gem stoner/psych imprint Riding Easy Records snapped them up instead. The Sabbath comparison doesn’t quite wash though: on the barnstorming opener ‘When I Come To’ Garcia repeats simple little fuzzed out guitar grooves that are closer to the kind of stoner rock played by the like likes of desert rats Fu Manchu, unfussy and built to complement the much busier rhythm section. It has a retro production that makes it sound like a crate diggers wet dream on some forgotten African psych rock compilation. And as you’d expect the drumming from Geoff Mann and additional percussion from Rich Panta would fit neatly into Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti’s band. — echoesanddust.com
