The legendary R&B songwriter who penned at least one undeniable classic in this album’s title track returns from nearly a decade-long retirement, calls in some notable friends, and re-records a handful of his better songs under the watchful eye of producer Jon Tiven (Wilson Pickett, tribute albums to Otis Blackwell and Curtis Mayfield). His voice is an acquired taste, and the majority of these tunes are performed as standard swamp rock fare, yet this is a decent career recap from the 60-something musician/producer/songwriter. Although Leon Russell (who gave Don Nix his biggest break by hiring him to produce and write songs for Freddie King) is conspicuously M.I.A., old Mar-Keys bandmate Steve Cropper is aboard, as are friends Dan Penn, Bonnie Bramlett, John Mayall, Tony Joe White, and Bobby Whitlock. Queen’s Brian May even guests (overdubbed) on a track, as does Mountain man Leslie West. For better or worse, none of these marquee names are particularly prominent in the mix. The majority of the tracks are dominated by Nix’s solid studio band which includes ex-Double Trouble man Reese Wynans on organ, guitarist Tiven, Wet Willie keyboardist Mike Duke, and Muscle Shoals legend David Hood on bass. Even with some good songs, it’s obvious why Nix’s previous solo albums — all but one of which remain out of print as of 2002 — never made much of an impression. His thin vocals are non-descript at best, and off-key at worst. Nix’s own versions of these songs remain inferior to the more famous covers from Freddie King, Albert King, John Mayall, and Jeff Beck. A few new compositions, like the surging “One More Repossession,” chug along with moderate energy and enthusiasm, but even though everyone seems to be trying their hardest, sparks just don’t fly during the majority of the album. Label owner Jerry Gordon’s liner notes provide a short but snappy synopsis of Nix’s colorful life and the 12-page booklet includes rare historical snapshots. Ultimately, this is a well-intentioned project with some unpretentious, rootsy performances that just never gets off the ground.

For nearly 20 years, Yonder Mountain String Band has redefined bluegrass music, expanding the traditional acoustic genre beyond its previously established boundaries by steadily pushing the envelope into the realms of rock n roll and improvisation. Yonder has always played music of their own design, in the process attracting a devout coterie of fans that often resembles a tight knit family on an epic musical journey as Yonder traverses the country with an ever-rigorous tour schedule. Although Yonder Mountain String Band has come to be known for combining rock n’ roll improvisational tendencies with their fundamentally traditional bluegrass sound, the band also cites a seemingly surprising musical influence: punk.
“We didn’t even hear bluegrass until our 20s,” said guitarist Adam Aijala. “Falling in love with the sound of bluegrass instruments, while also having all of these outside influences that had nothing to do with bluegrass — well, what comes out isn’t what we envisioned.”
Their latest album, Black Sheep, reflects a time of experimentation for the group perhaps more than any other. Following the departure of a founding member, this latest effort is the first time the band has utilized the conventional five-piece bluegrass instrumental line-up of guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and bass throughout an entire record.
“The traditional bluegrass lineup allows us to rethink things on different levels,” said Dave Johnston. “But at the heart of it all is the same energy and drive and a freewheeling spirit. It’s an exciting time for us because we have an invigorating sense of the future. At the end of the day, Yonder is a band with almost two decades of music under its belt, but we’re always a bit restless. We want to move the music forward to new places, which keeps us on our musical toes.”
Black Sheep marks the band’s sixth full-length studio album and will be released at the 42nd Telluride Bluegrass Festival on Tuesday, June 16 via the group’s own label, Frog Pad Records. They will tour throughout summer, fall and winter in support of the album, with a special stop in Colorado for a hometown show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Friday, August 21 with good friends Greensky Bluegrass and Fruition.
“We’ve been growing over the years and I feel like we really don’t have any limitations,” Aijala said. “It doesn’t feel like work when you get to hang out with people that you care about and play music.”
“It’s not just bluegrass — it’s progressive. Everything Yonder has ever tried to do, we’re doing in this record. It’s gonna take some time for fans to get acquainted with the new Yonder,” added bassist, Ben Kaufmann. “When you make a big change like we did, it’s a huge thing. But the band is a force, and the album is such a perfect example of our new direction.”

The original 1970 MGM album on CD and Digital for the first time, plus a second disc of rarities and previously unissued songs. Lester Bangs, in Rolling Stone magazine, said the album was, “like a labor of love, a salute from a young visionary to an ancient sage.” Allen Ginsberg began “tuning” William Blake’s poetry in 1968 (inspired by attending the tumultuous protests at that year’s Democratic Convention in Chicago), but the origin of the album dates back to a 1948 vision or “auditory illumination” as he called it, of William Blake reciting poetry to him in his Spanish Harlem apartment. Moved by this, Ginsberg began to set Blake’s poetry to music. In 1969, he began recording musical versions of Blake’s poetry with Peter Orlovsky, and jazz legends Bob Dorough, Don Cherry, Elvin Jones! 19 of those songs were released the following year as Songs Of Innocence And Experience. That material finally arrives on CD and Digital as The Complete Songs Of Innocence And Experience in 2017. In addition to the original LP, 2 previously unissued tracks have been added: an alternate take, as well as a song intended for the LP, but left off due to time constraints. But, that is not where the story ends. In 1971, Ginsberg returned to the Blake material, recording 11 songs in San Francisco with avant-garde cellist Arthur Russell—four of which were never issued. The ensemble also recorded 3 Tibetan mantras with a Buddhist choir—resulting in a full on psychedelic East-West experience—also all previously unissued. This material comprises a second CD, truly making this Complete. With restoration and mastering from Grammy®-winner Michael Graves, the material sounds timeless. Complied by producer Pat Thomas (who also worked on 2016’s The Last Word On First Blues box set), this double CD package includes a new essay from Thomas, who tracked down several of the original musicians (never before interviewed) for this project uncovering rare session photos as well. Blake’s writings from the late 18th century and Ginsberg’s interpretations from the 20th come full circle in the 21st century’s The Complete Songs Of Innocence And Experience.
