Οι Melt Mountainδεν είναι καινούριο συγκρότημα, αφού υπάρχουν από το 2011 έχοντας κυκλοφορήσει κι ένα 4-tracks EP το 2014. Τώρα έχουν έτοιμο LP, το “Superfetish” στην Inner Ear, κλεισμένο σε ωραίο gatefoldπου περιέχει 20σέλιδο bookletμε στίχους και ζωγραφιές, συν κωδικό για ψηφιακό κατέβασμα.

Είναι περίεργο γκρουπ οι Melt Mountain και όπως είχα γράψει παλαιότερα… «τα τραγούδια τους μοιάζουν κάπως σαν ιδιοκατασκευές, οι οποίες στέκονται “όρθιες” απλώς και μόνον με τα απαραίτητα. Το αν πρόκειται για ένα lo-fi επιτηδευμένο ή απλώς αναγκαστικό εν τέλει μικρή σημασία έχει».

Μπορεί να έχει περάσει κάποιος καιρός από τότε που τα σημείωνα αυτά, αλλά, εν πάση περιπτώσει, νοιώθω πως ισχύουν και τώρα.

Οι Melt Mountain είναι ένα συγκρότημα τής «διάθεσης», τής «στιγμής». Τα τραγούδια τους θέλω να πω πως, ανεξαρτήτως αν κρύβουν κάποια δουλειά πίσω τους (που σίγουρα κρύβουν), στην πράξη μοιάζουν με πρωτόλεια, με ανολοκλήρωτες κατασκευές. Οι συνεχείς αλλαγές π.χ. μέσα στο ίδιο track είναι ένα απ’ αυτά τα… αποδομητικά χαρακτηριστικά της τέχνης των Melt Mountain, οι οποίοι για το μόνο που νοιάζονται είναι να σου υπενθυμίζουν, τακτικά, πως πιο πολύ «παίζουν», «υποκρίνονται», παρά ενδιαφέρονται για να κάνουν «τέχνη». Υπενθυμίζουν, αν θέλετε, μιαν απομυθοποιητική διάσταση που κρύβει συχνά το τραγούδι στη βάση του – μια βήμα-βήμα κατασκευή, που επιχειρεί να συνταιριάξει τα αταίριαστα. Κάτι παρόμοιο έκανε ο Zappa με τους Mothers στα sixties, το επιχείρησε και ο Alex Harvey στην Αγγλία στα seventies με τον δικό του τρόπο – αυτή τη θεατρική διάσταση, εννοώ, στο άσμα, που το συνδέει με κάτι το ανατρεπτικό στους ήχους και τα λόγια. Εντάξει, να μην παρεξηγηθώ, δεν συγκρίνω τους Melt Mountain με τους προαναφερομένους, όπως δεν γίνεται να συγκρίνεις τους Beatles μ’ ένα σημερινό γκρουπ, που επιχειρεί να κάνει ποπ τραγούδια, όμως η βάση, μια κάποια βάση τέλος πάντων, παραμένει ίδια.

Δεν είναι εύκολο, ως ποπ άλμπουμ, το “Superfetish”, παρότι έχει μέσα και μερικά κάπως πιο γραμμικά, πιο συμβατικά κομμάτια, που τυγχάνει να είναι και τα καλύτερα –τα καλύτερα των Melt Mountain– όπως το “Lethargic”, το “Interlude” και το “Leech cities”.

Καταλήγοντας θα έλεγα πως, στην περίπτωσή μας, έχουμε να κάνουμε μ’ ένα ενδιαφέρον συγκρότημα, που θα χρειαστεί κάτι ακόμη (σε ηχογράφηση εννοώ), προκειμένου να πείσει 100% για τις προθέσεις του.

Πατάω λίγο φρένο δηλαδή, αλλά από την άλλη αφήνω το αμάξι να τσουλήσει…

Amplifier have announced further details on their new album Trippin’ With Dr Faustus.

Their sixth album and follow-up up to 2014’s Mystoria will launch on June 16 and will feature 10 tracks.

The band say: “We spent a long time making this record, principally because it was recorded on a tape machine that we basically had to rebuild from scraps from the dumpster around the back of the mill and whatever bits of debris we could fish out of the Ashton Canal.

“We think you can hear the difference very clearly between what it sounds like to record on tape and what it sounds like to record on the computer – which all our other records were.

Five Horse Johnson is not a band that makes apologies, and compromise is not an option. The truth is, this is hard, heavy, dirty blues rock ’n’ roll for people who like the sound of an engine roaring or the feeling obtained by following a cold beer with a shot of good whiskey. FHJ will gladly kick your ass, and then wait for you to say thank you and ask for another.

ZZ Ward returns for her sophomore album, The Storm, which follows her well received debut album, Til The Casket Drops. It’s been five years since ZZ’s debut album and The Storm is well worth the wait. While ZZ Ward has definite pop appeal, she certainly isn’t leaving her blues influences behind.

ZZ Ward grew up on the blues listening to Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Johnson and Big Mama Thornton, and that influence is clear from the get-go. “Ghost” is the opening track, which is raw, folksy, and bluesy and that theme continues on “Cannonball.” 2017 Grammy Award winner Fantastic Negrito joins Ward on the track, which showcases ZZ on harmonica. The single, “Help Me Mama” follows and highlights ZZ’s powerhouse vocals. Next up is the title track, which begins with just ZZ’s vocals and piano and is about weathering through the tough times in life.
