ALEX GOODMAN εγγραφές για τζαζ σεξτέτο
Καναδός, από το Τορόντο, είναι ο κιθαρίστας Alex Goodman, αν και τα τελευταία χρόνια η βάση του είναι η Νέα Υόρκη. Από ’κει βασικά άντλησε επιρροές και αφορμές, εκεί μάζεψε τους μουσικούς του κι εκεί παρουσιάζει, βασικά, ζωντανά τη δουλειά του. Το “Second Act”[Lyte Records, 2017] είναι το πιο πρόσφατο straight ahead τζαζ άλμπουμ του, φτιαγμένο και προορισμένο για σεξτέτο (το γκρουπ συμπληρώνουν οι Matt Marantz σαξόφωνο, ewi, Eden Ladin πιάνο, πλήκτρα, Rick Rosato μπάσο, Jimmy MacBride ντραμς, συν φωνή (από την Felicity Williams και τον… συμπατριώτη μας Alex Samaras).

Με ρεπερτόριο πρωτότυπο (όλες οι συνθέσεις ανήκουν στον Goodman) και με κατεύθυνση το γκρουπ –κάθε μέλος συμμετέχει επί ίσοις όροις στη διαμόρφωση των κομματιών– το “Second Act” ακούγεται ως ένα απολύτως εμπεριστατωμένο και επεξεργασμένο άλμπουμ, με κομμάτια που διακρίνονται άλλοτε για τη μελωδική ευφράδειά τους και άλλοτε για τον απρόβλεπτα δυναμικό χαρακτήρα τους.
Στο “Empty” αναφέρομαι, κατά πρώτον, που είναι ένα γερό fusion track, με αναφορές και στην ηλεκτρική τζαζ του ’70. Περαιτέρω, ένα από τα πιο μεγάλα σε διάρκεια κομμάτια του άλμπουμ είναι το 8λεπτο “Heightened”, που ξεκινάει κάπως… παράταιρα, με νότες που πέφτουν αργά, προετοιμάζοντας μιαν ατμόσφαιρα… αφαίρεσης, και που, στην πορεία, όλως περιέργως(;) μετατρέπεται σ’ ένα εξαιρετικό swing. Μνεία επίσης και στο “The first break” με το πολύ ωραίο σόλο του Marantzστο ewi (ένα ηλεκτρονικό πνευστό με ήχο… σύνθι).
Ωραίο άλμπουμ, που, χωρίς να εντυπωσιάζει, έχει μια πληρότητα (συνθετική και οργανοπαικτική), που σε «φτιάχνει».

A classic-sounding Southern rock band out on Knoxville, Tennessee, the Dirty Guv’nahs (frontman James Trimble, Hammond organist Chris Doody, pianist Michael Jenkins, guitarists Michael Jenkins and Cozmo Holloway, and brothers Justin and Aaron Hoskins on bass and drums, respectively) create an energized musical blend that recalls the Black Crowes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Allman Brothers Band, with a dose of Americana and the Band tossed in for seasoning. The band formed when the members were attending university in Knoxville, and what was initially supposed to be just a couple of occasional gigs really took off, and the band quickly developed a loyal local following. The Dirty Guv’nahs’ energetic and inspired live shows earned them opening spots for acts like the Zac Brown Band, Wilco, and the Levon Helm Band, among others, and a performance slot at Bonnaroo — a show that led to a recording session in 2009 at Levon Helm Studios. Two independent releases followed, 2009’s The Dirty Guv’nahs and 2010’s Youth Is in Our Blood. The band continued to evolve its sound on its third album, Somewhere Beneath These Southern Skies, which was produced by Ross Copperman, engineered by Richie Biggs, and released in 2012 through a distribution deal with Dualtone Music. ~ Steve Leggett

Known as the “Texas Prince of Zydeco,” JABO’s mixture of the soul of Blues with the foot tapping rhythms of Zydeco, has made him a force to be recognized in both genres of music!
JABO has graced the cover of Texas Monthly Magazine and has been featured in the Houston Chronicle and numerous Zydeco and Blues magazines. In 1988, while working on a project, he met and later teamed up with the late great, “Meistro” Calvin Owens. Calvin was BB King’s former orchestra conductor. Jabo was consequently featured on several of the Calvin Owens Blues Orchestra albums.
JABO has performed with or opened for such legendary artists as Bobby Blue Bland; Rockin Sidney; Johnnie Taylor; Tyrone Davis, Rue Davis; and many othes. In 2005, he released an album titled “Zydeco Around the Town” which has received rave reviews. In 2007, the single, “You Didn’t Hurt Me” written by Rue Davis and performed with the Calvin Owens Blues Orchestra hit #4 on the music charts. Jabo’s album titled “Texas Prince of Zydeco” has been available on Amazon.com for years. His newly released album “Zydeco Tramp” features the music and voices of Lil Jabb & Triple Krown as well as the legendary blues man Rue Davis.
Today, JABO continues to amaze audiences of all sizes–from intimate clubs to large auditoriums — with his high energy, qiet professionalism and showmanship–not to mention the reactions to his powerful fusion of the high energy of Zydeco and the soulful moan of the Blues.

Earlier this Spring, an unknown name started cropping up prominently on the British Summer festival posters: “A Blaze of Feather”. Citadel, Latitude, Boardmasters, all had this curious name, front and centre of their posters. Unsurprisingly the internet churned went into overdrive.
British musician Ben Howard, not one for making too much noise on social media, started retweeting references to this mythical A Blaze of Feather, which, in turn, became a source of great consternation amongst his fans on both Twitter and Reddit. Is it Ben under a new guise? Is this the multi-platinum selling musician’s new band? Why has he broken an extended silence to draw attention to a random band name?
The truth is yes, and yet the truth is also no. A Blaze of Feather is the music of Ben’s long-standing guitarist and friend Mickey Smith, aided by the same, sprawling six-piece band as Ben, including ex Hiss Golden Messenger drummer, Kyle Keegan. That the music shares a similar atmosphere and sonic world should come as little surprise. It was produced by Mickey, Ben and fellow guitarist Nat Wason in a makeshift studio on the west coast of Cornwall, and mixed by Nicolas Vernhes (The War on Drugs/Daughter).
