Peasant will grab newcomers to Richard Dawson’s work by the scruff of the neck and refuse to let them go until they have signed a pledge of life-long allegiance. Dawson spent years incubating his singular art on the Newcastle experimental scene. Devotees of his earlier recordings will be at once intrigued by and slightly fearful of the prospect of a record that could make his three landmark releases – 2014’s Nothing Important; 2013’s The Glass Trunk’s; 2012’s The Magic Bridge’s – look like formative work. Peasant is that album.

Digitally remastered and expanded edition. Recalling the elegant simplicity of Jansch’s early works, From The Outside sees Jansch return to the uncomplicated yet supremely effective sound of his eponymous debut. This is Bert laid bare – eschewing the more intricate arrangements of his surrounding works for the holy trinity of guitar, banjo and voice, perhaps reflective of his state of mind at the time. Stand-out tracks include ‘River Running’ and ‘Blackbird In The Morning’ which were both (amazingly) omitted from the original vinyl release. One of Bert’s rarest releases, this 1985 LP was originally issued as an edition of just 500 copies on the small Belgian label, Konexion. This issue unites the varied track listing of previous versions. Remastered from original tapes by Brian Pyle.

On their sixth studio album called “Little Fish”, the German jazz quartet from Wiesbaden once again elaborately breaks the boundaries of rigid genres. Besides the eponymous sound of bossa nova, elements of samba, fado and other latin jazz sounds as well as cool and classic jazz bits flow into their thrilling compositions, in which all stylistic components merge and become fantastically blurred. Liza da Costa, the vibrant and bubbly Portuguese-Indian singer, shines like a lightning ball of energy; she is accompanied by exceedingly able improvisational talents Tilmann Höhn (guitar), Wolfgang Stamm (drums, percussion) and Alexander Sonntag (upright bass), who harmonize to the point of perfection. For the recordings of “Little Fish”, Hotel Bossa Nova have invited a couple of guests whose contributions on Rhodes and piano, electric guitar and additional vocals lend a well-tempered summery atmosphere to the album. On top of the variety of styles that ranges from the pop appeal of a focussed samba (“Peixinho”) to the complex rhythms full of clever twists (“Perguntas”) and the melancholy of fado (“Rosa Morena”), the songs also impress with their humorous and poetic lyrics which offer everyday stories, raise philosophical questions or allure with high-class scat. With their 12-year-old history, Hotel Bossa Nova are surely no longer an insider tip in Germany. Indeed, they now even count among the most exciting European live acts of world jazz and are planning to tour in France for the first time this year.

Kacey Johansing was one half of duo Yesway, and is now about to release her third album, The Hiding. The record is gentle and sunny, steeped in late ’70s soft rock but sounding very much here and now. Members of Real Estate, Fruit Bats, Vetiver, The Range of Light Wilderness, and Tall Tales and the Silver Lining helped her out making it, and we’ve got the premiere of the featherlight “Bow and Arrow,” which brings to mind some of those groups’ breezy sounds.
The Hiding is out June 2 via Night Bloom Records, a label she started with Real Estate’s Alex Bleeker and singer-songwriter Jeff Manson. Check out the tracklist and artwork below. She’s got a couple West Coast dates this summer, too, and those are listed below.

This isn’t so much a new album by long-running Spanish pop/rock act La Oreja de Van Gogh as it is a demonstration of their confidence in new vocalist Leire Martínez, who joined in 2008. She had big shoes to fill, replacing original singer Amaia Montero, who’d been the face and voice of their first four albums. So after discovering Martínez on the Spanish reality show Factor X, the group released its fifth album, A las Cinco en el Astoria, with her. Now they’re showing longtime fans that she can handle the earlier material by re-recording it with her on vocals and a symphony orchestra behind them. Two songs are reprised from A las Cinco, while one from their debut, 1998’s Dile al Sol, three from 2000’s El Viaje de Copperpot, four from their 2003 breakthrough disc Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida, and one from their final album with Montero, 2006’s Guapa, make up the rest of the disc. In general, the arrangements don’t differ much from the originals, except for the addition of strings and maybe a little more piano than before. But La Oreja de Van Gogh have never been a hard rock act; they’ve always been sort of "soft alternative," so this album fits quite comfortably into their discography and will likely make fans who’ve stuck with them very happy.

In common with many private pressings, the only album by Madden & Harris is both imitative of some famous artists and not nearly as good as the best releases by their inspirations. Yet on the other hand, like many private pressings, Fool’s Paradise is interesting in that it has an unpredictability and homespun (though not lo-fi) idiosyncrasy of the sort that almost every major-label big-budget release ironed out, particularly in the mid-’70s, when this came out. It’s placid, pleasant early-’70s-style folk-rock with a dash of progressive rock influence, sounding fairly British in its appropriation of both approaches, although the duo was based in Sydney. In some senses it’s fairly standard stuff of its ilk, with a haunting though not outstandingly innovative melodic air that recalls olden pre-industrial British times. There’s also a song cycle feel in which the concept remains elusive, despite the four-part "Fool’s Paradise" suite that serves as the closing track. But it’s not just the usual rural hippie-folkie trip, with some imaginative use of synthesizers and strings embellishing the arrangements, as well as disciplined interplay between the vocal harmonies that has a slight classical/choral grandeur. At some moments (like "The Wind at Eve"), it can recall the folkiest aspects of the very early King Crimson, when Ian McDonald was still in the lineup; "Margaret O’Grady" is a low-key Kinks-like character sketch, with the obligatory vaudevillian bounce; and some of the more reflective passages (especially in the "Will You Be There" section of the "Fool’s Paradise" suite) are a little similar to the gentlest, most acoustic moods of 1970s Pink Floyd.

It’s amazing how the floodgates open when you shut out all the internal and external noise, stop pandering to stereotype, cease listening to your anxieties, and disregard the compartment society has built for you. I’m Not Your Man, the Charlie Andrew (Alt-J, Rae Morris)-produced second album from Marika Hackman, begins with an impromptu hearty laugh. It’s not the sound of silliness; it’s the sound of liberation, spontaneity, and joy. 24-year-old Hackman is feeling more herself than ever. Life isn’t necessarily funnier or happier, but when there’s cause for a joke or a big ballsy statement, she’s not holding back any more. The album took almost 18 months to complete, during which time Hackman switched to a new manager and a new label, transitions that yielded new avenues for exploration, a lot of time, and a lot of distance – mainly, she insists, from self-imposed boundaries. “I used to be very self-conscious,” explains Hackman. “If something sounded a bit too pop or like I’d heard it before I’d mold it into something different. This time around I thought, ‘fuck it, I’ll just let it flow.'” The results of this semi-anarchic approach are evident in the grungier, catchier sonics of I’m Not Your Man, and the lyrics, which reveal an unhinged and shamelessly free Hackman. There’s an open-ended nature to the lyrics, which delve into femininity, sex and sexual identity, millennial ennui, the pressures of living in a social media bubble, and the perils of being young in a fast-paced industry. “The record’s all about female relationships, romance and breakdowns, but there’s also a dim worldview going on. ‘I’m Not Your Man’ can either mean ‘I’m not your man, I’m your woman,’ or it can mean ‘I’m not a part of this.'” Hackman cranked up the knobs in the studio, turning away from the quieter sounds of her past to realize her teenage fantasy of fronting a raucous band. “I wanted to let rip and lose control. When I was younger I wasn’t looking at Joni Mitchell. I was looking at Nirvana thinking, ‘I wanna be like that!'” To channel this feral female energy, Hackman recruited London quartet The Big Moon as her backing band. The results are a dynamic, multi-genre album tied together by razor-sharp wit. The sounds span from Cate Le Bon weirdness to Warpaint dirge jams to straight-up Britpop choruses. “People were saying it was a mash-up between Radiohead, Blondie and The Cure,” laughs Hackman, self-mockingly. “I can’t wait to see the reaction,” she says. “That’s the thrill of reinventing yourself. I might piss off a lot of die-hard folky fans but this is still my brain, it’s still my world, and I’m gonna create it how I want.”

Born in Sacramento California and raised there and on the family ranch in Southern Oregon, James grew up in a musical family who ranched cattle and grew alfalfa during the day and jammed together on the front porch at night. Just out of high school in Sacramento he started performing as a solo acoustic act and then formed his own group, the House Band that played up and down the west coast eventually landing a record deal with Warner/Curb. The band was renamed Prisoner.

James and the band moved to Los Angeles and went on to release one single before disbanding. “Those were fun times, says James. The label flew us to Muscle Shoals just to record the demos for the album.

While living in LA James lent his vocals on many feature film soundtracks like “Teen Wolf” “Fire with Fire” Ishtar” and “Tin Cup’ and recorded his first solo album for Atlantic Records with producer Gary Katz (of Steely Dan fame).

Push play on this album and you’ll be reminded of the first time you heard some of the iconic female voices of roots country pop/rock such as Linda Ronstadt, Sheryl Crow or Miranda Lambert. Jaime Wyatt may not have a career like those icons (yet) but opening track “Wishing Well” jumps out of the speakers with the same confidence and undeniable vocal self-assurance that immediately announces an impressive new talent. Given appropriate promotion, it’s an obvious hit that ought to put Wyatt on the map. But there’s more to her than one great track.

Although Wyatt has a handful of under-the-radar previous releases and eagle-eyed listeners may have noticed her on a few obscure soundtracks, this short disc serves as her debut to most. Don’t let the somewhat polished production dissuade you from Wyatt’s predominantly original songs or her ability to sing them with the force with which they were written. The disc’s title refers to her eight-month stint in the clink and subsequent probation for committing a felony. It’s also an indication of lyrics influenced by that prison stay such as those of “Wasco” about a fellow inmate ready to marry a virtual stranger as soon as she is released. On the other end of the lyrical spectrum is the bittersweet ballad “From Outer Space” where the protagonist feels like an adrift astronaut as Wyatt uses comets and radio waves to reflect her disconnect from a loved one.

She shifts to laid-back folk/country for the acoustic, stripped-down instrumentation of the reflective “Giving Back The Best Of Me.” Wyatt closes this too short seven-song set with “Misery And Gin,” a barroom weeper from Merle Haggard’s catalog that captures the striking catch in her voice for lyrics such as “memories and drinks don’t mix too well … looking at the world through the bottom of a glass.” It’s a poignant closer to a stirring introduction for this exciting newcomer with old soul.

Staff Benda Bilili, who’ve been acclaimed by the likes of Africa Express and Damon Albarn are the latest phenomenon to come out of the Congo. A group of paraplegic street musicians who live in and around the grounds of the zoo in Kinshasa, they make music of astonishing power and beauty. The band’s mesmerising grooves, overlaid with vibrant vocals , mix 70s funk, old Cuban son and mambo with the mellifluous flow of classic Congolese rumba that evoke the golden age of Franco. Four veteran singer/guitarists sitting on spectacularly customized tricycles are the core of the band, backed by a younger, all-acoustic, rhythm section pounding out tight beats. Over the top of this are weird, infectious guitar-like solos performed by a 17 year-old prodigy on a one-string electric lute he designed and built himself out of a tin can. Staff Benda Bilili were introduced to the British and US musicians who visited Kinshasa as part of the Africa Express trip in Nov 2007, and won the admiration and hearts of the likes of Massive Attack and Damon Albarn. ‘That was beautiful,’ said [Massive Attack's] Robert del Naja, visibly moved. ‘It was worth coming all this way just to hear that’.
