The Cars – Candy-O [Expanded Edition] (2017)

Released on 13 June, 1979, Candy-O is the Cars’ second album. The band recorded again with Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker (he also produced the Cars’ 1st album). It hit #3 on the U.S. Billboard album chart and the first single, “Let’s Go”, took the Cars into the top 15 on the Billboard hot 100 singles chart for the first time. Candy-O is an RIAA certified 4X platinum album in the U.S. alone. Our expanded edition includes a previously unreleased track, “They Won’t See You”.

This 1990 classic was the first collaboration between the incomparable Pakistani qawwal Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and guitarist Michael Brook, a partnership suggested by Peter Gabriel. Nusrat was eager to experiment with his music, to create a more contemporary album that could sit alongside his traditional collection; the result reached #14 on Billboard's world music chart and its title track, remixed by Massive Attack, was a massive UK club and chart hit. Benjamin Gibbard – Bandwagonesque (2017)

Death Cab For Cutie singer-songwriter Ben Gibbard remakes Teenage Fanclub’s career-making 1991 album Bandwagonesque song for song. In “The Concept,” Gibbard stretches Teenage Fanclub’s work from six minutes to a whopping eight.
Otherwise, these aren’t radical reinventions; the central statement behind Gibbard’s take on Bandwagonesque seems to be that he loves the record a lot. But his new version does function as a charming showcase for everyone involved: The singer’s approachable warmth dovetails nicely with the idiosyncratic yet still airtight songcraft at the heart of the Big Star-loving Scottish power-pop band. Gibbard makes the case that the album he’s tackling is a modern classic, and he’s got a point.
“Bandwagonesque is my favorite record by my favorite band of all time,” Gibbard writes via email. “It came along at a pivotal time in my musical life, and I’ve loved it for over 25 years. It’s been such a blast taking these songs apart to see how they work and then putting them back together again.”
For his part, Teenage Fanclub singer-songwriter Norman Blake writes that he’s both honored and impressed with the new take on his best-known album. “I was thrilled and extremely flattered when I heard that Ben Gibbard had decided to cover Bandwagonesque in its entirety. Needless to say, the re-imagining of the album by this very talented fella is both inventive and deftly executed.”

Kris Kristofferson – The Cedar Creek Sessions (2016)

Recorded live June 23, 24 and 25, 2014 at Cedar Creek Recording in Austin, Texas. Produced by Tamara Saviano and Shawn Camp Musicians: Kris Kristofferson (Guitar), Shawn Camp (Guitar), Kevin Smith (Bass), Michael Ramos (Keys), Mike Meadows (Drums). In June 2014, Kris Kristofferson hosted a three-day impromptu jam session at Cedar Creek Studios in Austin, Texas. It had been a while since Kris had recorded and here was a chance to lay down some of his favorite compositions with a live band. With Shawn Camp on lead guitar, Kevin Smith on bass, Michael Ramos on keyboard, and Mike Meadows on drums, the group ran through twenty-five of Kristofferson‰’s best-loved songs. On the final day, Kris‰’s dear friend Sheryl Crow came in to sing a duet of ”The Loving Gift,‰” a song made famous by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash that Kris had never recorded.

33 years after their debut album, Bronski Beat return, as founding member Steve Bronski teams up with singer Stephen Granville for an expanded reworking of The Age Of Consent.
Dubbed The Age Of Reason, as well as “inventive and inspired” reworkings of most of the songs from the original record, the new album features three new tracks: a cover of Sylvester’s Stars, and new songs I’ll Be Gone and A Flower For Dandara. The latter is a tribute to the recently murdered Brazilian transexual Dandara dos Santos.
This is a two-CD set with the second disc largely concerned with multiple remixes of those three tracks. Interestingly, the remixes of A Flower For Dandara feature the voice of Rose McDowall, singer with cult ’80s favourites Strawberry Switchblade.
The Age Of Reason comes seven months after original keyboardist Larry Steinbachek died. The other member of the original line-up, a certain Mr Jimmy Somerville, left the band in 1985 and formed a partnership with Richard Cole as the Communards. After they disbanded he has enjoyed a successful solo career.

οι modal4 είναι επηρεασμένοι από τις μουσικές της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου
Οι modal4 είναι ένα καινούριο ελληνικό σχήμα, που έχει τώρα έτοιμο το πρώτο φερώνυμο CD του [Fishbowl, 2017], και που αποτελείται από τους Ευγένιο Βούλγαρη γιαλί-τανμπούρ ή τοξωτό τανμπούρ όπως το λένε, Θάνο Γκουντάνο άταστη κιθάρα, Παύλο Σπυρόπουλοκοντραμπάσο και Δημήτρη Τασούδη τύμπανα. Οι μουσικοί δεν είναι πρωτοφανέρωτοι βεβαίως. Όλοι τους έχουν παρουσία-πορεία σε προγενέστερα σχήματα, με κάποια εκ των οποίων μπορεί και να συνεργάζονται ακόμη. Ο Βούλγαρης είναι δεξιοτέχνης στο γιαλί-τανμπούρ κι έχει εμφανιστεί με τους Ross Daly, Χρίστο Τσιαμούλη, Νίκο Κυπουργό, Νότη Μαυρουδή κ.ά., ο Γκουντάνος έχει βρεθεί με BAiLdSA, Λωξάντρα, Ευανθία Ρεμπούτσικα κ.ά., ο Σπυρόπουλος έχει περάσει από τον Λαβύρινθο, έχοντας βρεθεί δίπλα στους Χάρη Λαμπράκη, Σωκράτη Σινόπουλο κ.ά., ενώ και ο Τασούδης είναι γνωστός από την παρουσία του στους Magnanimus Trio, Yeden, Prefabricated Quartet κ.λπ. Άρα… τέσσερις μουσικοί με κατατεθειμένα διαπιστευτήρια στο χώρο στον οποίο απλώνεται η παράδοση των μουσικών της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου, επιχειρώντας να «συνομιλήσει» (η συγκεκριμένη παράδοση) με κάποια νεότερα ακούσματα. Απ’ αυτή την πλευρά τούτο το πρώτο άλμπουμ των modal4 θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί ως world, με το… δεύτερο συνθετικό να παίζει. Το λέμε, γιατί το… world-jazzπ.χ. αφήνει πολλά πράγματα απ’ έξω, όταν ακόμη και οι ποικίλες, και ωραία σπαρμένες, αναφορές δεν παραπέμπουν σε κάτι περισσότερο σαφές. Κάτι, που καταγράφεται στα «υπέρ» των modal4 και όχι στα «κατά». Και εξηγούμαι…

Το συγκρότημα τόσο στις δικές του συνθέσεις (συνθέσεις των μελών του εννοώ, υπάρχει κι ένα κομμάτι του Αντώνη Απέργη), όσο και στις διασκευές (παραδοσιακά από Τουρκία, Αζερμπαϊτζάν, Περσία, Πόντος) ακολουθεί ένα δικό του τρόπο/δρόμο. Κατ’ αρχάς από πλευράς οργάνων έχουμε το γιαλί-τανμπούρ, που είναι ένα όργανο της Ανατολής και που θα φέρει το κύριο μελωδικό βάρος, αλλά από ’κει και πέρα έχουμε την κιθάρα (που ως άταστη έχει καλύτερη «επικοινωνία» με το τανμπούρ) και ακόμη ένα κάπως… τζαζ ρυθμικό τμήμα (με κοντραμπάσο και πλήρες ντραμ-σετ). Αυτό σημαίνει πως ρυθμικά οι modal4 είναι ανεβασμένοι και αν κάποιος στήσει αυτί και προσπαθήσει ν’ ακούσει μόνο το rhythm section φερ’ ειπείν θ’ αντιληφθεί πολλά και διάφορα «περάσματα», που δεν έχουν σχέση μόνο με τις μουσικές της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου, μα ακόμη και με το rock. Το αυτό και για την κιθάρα, που έχει ρόλο πολυποίκιλο και πολύπλοκο στην εγγραφή – και να παράξει δικά της ηχοχρώματα, και να κινηθεί ρυθμικά, και να φτιάξει εισαγωγές, και να διανύσει μελωδικά μέρη. Φυσικά το γιαλί-τανμπούρ έχει τη μερίδα του λέοντος, εδώ, και είναι λογικό, καθώς οι συνθέσεις που παρουσιάζονται στο “modal4” CD είναι ό,τι αποκαλούμε (έτσι χοντρικώς και ασαφώς) μουσικές-της-ανατολής, με το… ειδικότερο πάντως κλίμα να αφήνει πίσω του και μια κάπως πιο περιπετειώδη διάσταση – στα μεγαλύτερα σε διάρκεια tracks του άλμπουμ (τα 7λεπτα “Lament” και “Lullaby”).
Συγκρότημα διαβασμένο, που ξέρει τι θέλει. Αυτό είναι το modal4.

Thai Funk from The Impossibles! "Stage Show" (1974)
The Impossibles were really big in Thailand throughout the Seventies, playing Soul, Funk, Country and Ballads alike. They recorded their 1975 Album “Hot Pepper” in Sweden while on Tour in Europe: reportedly they were the first Thai Rock Band to record a whole album in English. They took their name from a 1960s cartoon called “The Impossibles” (a Hanna-Barbera TV Series). The group split up in 1977. While “Hot Pepper”, originally issued on Philips in 1975, has been repressed (unofficially?), “Stage Show” from 1974 has not been repressed. A couple of weeks ago I found this record in a small shop and did not expect too much, since most later records from The Impossibles were rather unlistenable (cheesy ballads). .. but not his one! It gets immediately funky, starting with an awesome version of Stevie Wonders “Superstition”, and stays funky and soulish (think Kool & The Gang, Barry White etc.). The only song I had to omit is a cover of Hank Williams' “Your cheatin’ heart”. I am a big fan of Hank Williams, but I want to spare you (and the world) this cover-version from the Impossibles… anyway, the rest is awesome, please enjoy!
