Martha And The Muffins – Where Blue Meets Green (Balearic Edits) (2017)

It’s not surprising that this album was conceived on a holiday on Ibiza. En route, in the plane, the two sound wizards Martin “ez” Fekl and TC Sunshine sipped cocktails as they planned all the scenarios, dreaming of sunny chillouts on the Balearic island – inspired by the sound of the Canadian New Wave band Martha & The Muffins. They successfully pitched their idea to the original rights owners with a cheeky mix of exuberance and persuasion, and out came a tipsy album that sounds hot, happy and deep. The air is redolent with the scent of the iconic perfume of the Eighties, “Lagerfeld”; the beats are sweet and slightly sticky. Above this heady mix float thick layers of edits, bringing everything together in a thick chug of timeless melancholy and the boxy-shouldered charm of the Eighties. For example, the distinctive sound of the Stick bass, which was incredibly popular with the decade’s musicians, including Tony Levin (bass player for King Crimson and Peter Gabriel), and which now forms a vital alliance with the clever, booming New Wave Pop of Martha & The Muffins. The band from Toronto had a massive hit with ECHO BEACH in 1980. The song was written by Mark Gane, the band’s main songwriter, and the infectious melody was made immortal through the vocals of his partner, singer Martha Johnson. The band had illustrious support from session musicians such as drummer Yogi Horton ( B52’s, John Lennon, David Byrne ) and bass player Tinker Barfield (Lou Rawls, Billy Ocean, Ray Charles, Luther Vandross), who injected a dash of funk into the band’s tracks. Later albums were produced by Daniel Lanois (who also produced U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno and others) and David Lord (producer for Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, etc.). Martha & The Muffins’ (later M&M) Wave Pop features impassioned musicianship, punchy riffs, frenetic melodies and out-of-the-ordinary lyrics, stylishly navigating between personal contemplation and artistic vision. The album W.B.M.G. was written and produced over a period of four years, and is based on the oeuvre of the band around Mark Gane and Martha Johnson. It flirts with the idea of being a positive-vibes holiday soundtrack for Balearic, retro and revival fans with a smattering of Eighties style. Anyone who grew up in this decade will have fully absorbed sparkling, funky dance pop and will also appreciate the soulful slow tracks, the grand choruses and the mantra-like verses. The album floats, surfs and grazes on the band’s history, occasionally landing in the Slow Core Chillout zone, uniting Ambient and Pop… low key and deeply charming.

One of the most energetic bands in the business, The Fleshtones will celebrate their 40th anniversary with the release of their 21st album, The Band Drinks For Free. Featuring 12 songs about love, deceit, and death in classic Fleshtones style, the album carelessly (to the purists) tosses together the fuzz-guitar and Farfisa organ riffs of so-called “garage rock” with rockabilly, soul, and surf.

Their music is in the tradition of 60s rock acts like Fairport Convention and Pentangle, and you’ll also hear similarities to the folksy side of Led Zeppelin and even Fleetwood Mac. Yet it also has a subtle, mysterious goth rock vibe slithering through the folk revivalism leaving a slightly dark, oily trail. Is it metal? Not exactly. Is it good? Oh yeah! This is some seriously enchanting, groovy stuff sure to conjure images of Woodstock, free love and hippies running amok in fields of green.

In February 2007 the original members of PENTANGLE received a BBC Radio 2 Lifetime Achievement Award from Sir David Attenborough. On 29th June 2008, exactly 40 years since the recording of their monumental live album Sweet Child at the Royal Festival Hall, they returned to the very same venue to begin their first British tour since 1973.

FINALE was recorded live during the 2008 tour and sees the original line-up revisit their classic repertoire. The beautifully recorded and packaged 2CD set captures the band in a series of scintillating performances. Bert Jansch supervised the mixing and sequencing and John Renbourn prepared the album masters before their untimely deaths in 2011 and 2015 respectively.

South Oklahoma-based American-country-bluesman Jeff Hobbs returns with a new album ‘Upward.’ Although the passionate performer writes and sings about sometimes rocky-roads, he takes any disillusionment and channels it into love and hope on these new songs, hence the title ‘Upward.”
Not everything in life is positive, but the talented Hobbs is doing his best to put a positive spin on life’s hardships and sings of learning lessons and moving forward in the situations life throws at you.
With his brooding baritone and southern country flavors leading the way, the songs are honest, with calculated rockin’ blues numbers and haunting guitar, lazy drum beats and rumbling bass.
Hobbs songs sound like they come from a young man with an old soul, he’s been knocked down and came back fighting with a song in his heart. The collection on ‘Upward’ pushes the limits of the singer songwriter genre and the Texas sound. On songs like “5 Nichols and A Hummingbird”, “Bitter Wind”, “House of Cards” and “Songs for the Restless” Hobbs self-reflection and humanity shines through.
Songs like “Bound to Live” and the title track “Upward” are all about deliverance and self-freedom.
About the song “Bound to live” Hobbs says “is that rally cry within yourself to get off your ass and move. I had been stuck in a place for so long with my music and my life where I was unable to get out of a rut. I didn’t believe in myself. While writing this album I found this need to break the chains, so to speak, and get out and live life to the fullest.” And we are glad you did Mr. Hobbs, or can we call you Jeff?

This music travels through a simple but delightful landscape of ancient, powerful mantras. As always, each piece is supported by the finest musicians from India and charming Eastern instruments: sitar, bansuri-flute, violin, tabla, harmonium, tanpura, swarmandal. A compilation of sacred songs, which can be nicely and effectively played during sadhana, meditation, relaxation, yoga…or just easy-listening to create good energy and loving atmosphere. 8. New York (3:57)
9. Just For Tonight (3:29)
10. Telephone (3:07)
11. I Really Love (3:01)

Phoebe Hunt singing “I like to pick at my wounds until they bleed,” is your first indication that this is not your typical folk/roots album.
Those who have followed the fiddler/vocalist, once a member of the wonderfully eclectic The Belleville Outfit, know she is no stranger to coloring outside of genres. But this first studio set with her Gatherers band occasionally pushes boundaries even further. The album’s title (Shanti is Hunt’s real first name; it’s also a mantra chanted by yogis to promote peace in body, mind and spirit) attempts to connect these eleven songs with a spiritual thread alluded to in the lyrics.
Yet it’s the generally unplugged music featuring accordion and stand-up bass supporting Hunt’s sweet, mellifluous voice, somewhat similar to that of Norah Jones’, that finds its unique groove. From the offbeat, minor key jazzy strum of “Telephone” to the Appalachian, backwoods “Lint Head Gal” that finds the protagonist running away from a typical female role (“my hands are hard as any man’s/ my heart is even harder”) and the exquisite, string-enhanced ballad “Round and Round,” featuring a sweet musical conversation between Hunt’s fiddle and husband Dominick Leslie’s mandolin, there’s plenty of fertile ground covered here.
Hunt brought her Gatherers band to study music in India for a few weeks prior to this recording. Even though these tunes don’t directly reflect Indian instrumentation or composition, the experience is referenced in the title to the prog-bluegrass influenced instrumental “Road to Kolhapur.” She goes country rock on the mid-tempo pop rocker “New York,” one of the more plugged in tunes and gets deeply romantic on the lovely waltz “Just for Tonight,” highlighted by accordion and Leslie’s mandolin supporting one of Hunt’s lushest and most lusty vocals.
Her obtuse lyrics to songs such as “Call My Bluff” (“stepping stones keep falling from beneath the ground”) weave between picked mandolin, wordless humming and piano creating a dreamscape that beckons the listener to float into their vibe.
This is an album for those, like Hunt, who “really love putting the phone down and spacing out for an hour . losing track of seconds that pass while I sleep,” as she sings against sparse, dreamy backing on the closing track. The unusual song structures, intricate instrumentation and Hunt’s alluring voice create a unique, often immersive sonic experience you’ll find yourself drifting into and may not want to leave.

11. Hammer & Love (3:33)
12. Little Water (1:07)

Releasing her new album The Water, Sam Buckingham has distilled an ambitious pilgrimage into songs that confront fear, convey heartache and celebrate adventure, desire and devotion.
With the majority of songs written over an eighteen month sojourn throughout Latin America, Buckingham immersed herself in new cultures and varied pursuits; volunteering alongside Sea Shepherd on a turtle conservation project; working on a permaculture farm in a remote Costa Rican village, studying Spanish and acrylic painting in a Nicaraguan township and completing formal yoga teacher training in the south of Mexico. Arriving at each new place, Buckingam sought local musicians, street performers and creative collaborations, as songs were written in hotel rooms, on top of dense jungle mountains and every conceivable place in-between.
“It was a time of intense exploration and growth – I was affected by so many people and experiences that I was quite certain they needed to be written about. I’d pick up my guitar already knowing, in a way, what I wanted to say.”
The Water became somewhat of an audio journal where subtle rhythms and the emotive language of Latin America sit beside fragile folk music, rousing Americana and pop-inflected hooks. There are fascinating surprises scattered throughout the record, while Buckingham explores the marriage of Australian folk with Latino influence – like a distorted steel pan bursting out from underneath a crunching electric guitar and heartbreaking harmonies – with the core of each song solidified by Buckingham’s intricate storytelling and timeless voice.
“Her songwriting and astounding voice gripped me” – Timber & Steel
Multi-instrumentalist and long-time collaborator Kent Eastwood lent his hand to the piano, organ, keyboard, acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, mandolin and some perfectly placed backing vocals on Jolene and Elephant Man. Recent Golden Guitar winner Fanny Lumsden and CMT’s ‘Nashville’ songwriter Timothy James Bowen feature on a pair of stunning duets and Dan Stanley Freeman commanded the upright and electric bass. Renowned for his raw approach and location recording, producer, engineer and drummer Syd Green sourced a converted horse stable on the outskirts of Jervis Bay for the band to bunker down for a week and record – immersing themselves in the natural surrounds without metropolitan distraction.
“I sent everyone the rough demos with strict instructions not to learn the songs. It was just about knowing the stories and really feeling that before we came together – so where to take each song was a very spontaneous and natural collaboration from the beginning”
Buckingham released the title track and first single late January 2017 with the accompanying, self directed and edited video seeing Brisbane artist Lauren De Luca transform Buckingham’s face into a gorgeously sombre water scene. The release coincided with sold out single launch shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne and, soon after, the album’s second track and forthcoming second single Living In The Dark was announced as a finalist in the renowned International Songwriting Competition and Buckingham was invited to open shows for Australian staples Felix Riebl and Jordie Lane as they launch new albums of their own.

Snakefarm are the collaboration between singer Anna Domino and her guitarist partner Michael Delory. ‘Songs From My Funeral’ could well be described as a concept album in that the themes for the songs are murder ballads, songs about death and the consequences of the opening up of the American Midwest through the building of railways; sometimes more than one motif is included in a song. Even the lullaby sung at the end is distinctly unsettling. All the songs are reinterpretations of traditional American folk ballads. An interesting, if somewhat academic, discussion on the resurgent interest of these American folk classics and the relation between them and the psyche of present day post-millennium America can be found in Anat Pick’s essay: ‘Death and Democracy: Snakefarm’s Songs from my Funeral and the New World Gothic’.
Now all this sounds quite gloomy and depressing, but it’s not. Thanks to Snakefarm’s reworking of these folk classics, the results whilst dark and atmospheric are actually surprisingly up-tempo. The darkness comes from Anna Domino’s vocals, which through the use of filters and other effects sounds cool, sultry but at times also detached and remote. There are distinct similarities here to the voices of Laurie Anderson and of Margo Timmins (singer with the Cowboy Junkies). This coolness is largely counterbalanced by the imaginative use of sampling, wind instruments and drum programming, and of time signatures, hence the seemingly contradictory musical styles suggested at the beginning.

The songs are all drawn from previous releases with the exception of Al Greens’ ‘Love and Happiness’. The new arrangements of these songs have taken on a whole new life of their own with the addition of the strings. The lush but sparse feeling of the recording leaves the listener with space to lean into the music.

Dayramir GonzalesBorn and raised in Havana, Cuba, pianist Dayramir (DY-ruh-meer) Gonzalez has come into his own as a New York City based artist and bold musical force with his bountiful U.S. debut The Grand Concourse EP released on Machat Music/Orchard.
The 5-track EP dazzles as an expressive showcase of the energetic Dayramir’s immense talent and sweeping musical vision. An internationally praised pianist and composer, (“Gonzalez’s bravado-infused pianism naturally extends the brilliant legacy of Cuban jazz pianists..,” — LA Weekly) he’s been hailed for his “monster technique” and prolific creative range which melds rock, pop, jazz and Afro-Cuban stylings.
The gifted artist dons multiple hats on The Grand Concourse EP, enthusiastically succeeding as…

73 MB  320 ** FLAC

…composer, arranger, orchestrator, bandleader, and more leading a dynamic array of musical assemblages, including string quartet, full orchestra, solo piano and Afro Cuban jazz septet. Whether it’s the appealing textures of the jazz-flecked “Smiling,” which Dayramir says “is a harmonious blend of a lot of the sonic elements of the album,” or the more hypnotic “Situaciones en 12/8,” with its fundamental groove evolving from West African musical tradition, or “Iyesa Con Miel,” dedicated to Oshun, one of the most powerful deities’ of the Yoruba pantheon, Dayramir sets his compass for a modern and timeless confluence of sound.

Dayramir’s journey may have begun in Cuba, but there’s been no shortage of mileposts lighting his diverse path. He was accepted into Cuba’s famed National High School For the Arts (ENA) and while still in school, was recruited by Cuban legend Giraldo Piloto to join Klimax, helping to shape the sound of that renowned group. In 2005 he won first place in Havana’s JoJazz festival in the composition category, winning a record deal with Cuba’s national label Colibri. He recorded his first album, released in Cuba in 2007, titled Habana enTRANCE, displaying his skills as artist, bandleader, and composer. The album would go on to win three Cubadisco awards, considered the Grammys of Cuba.

Dayramir was accepted into Havana’s prestigious Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) where he strengthened his burgeoning composition skills under the tutelage of master Juan Pinera. Next, he was awarded a musical scholarship to Boston’s revered Berklee College of Music in the U.S., becoming the first Cuban national to receive Berklee’s coveted full Presidential Scholarship. In 2012, he was called “a rising star in the Latin jazz world,” by Carnegie Hall and personally selected by Chucho Valdes to represent the young generation of Cuban Jazz at Carnegie Hall’s “Voices of Latin America.” Dayramir graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2013 and received the Wayne Shorter award for Most Outstanding Composer of the Year upon graduation

The vibrant The Grand Concourse EP embraces the pulse and mystique of New York City, as well as the allure of early 20th century Cuban sonic leanings and the cultural roots and myths of sensually fused Yoruba religious elements (Cuban-centric Yoruba beliefs identify both natural and spiritual characteristics as part of its foundation) elevated by Dayramir’s 21st century precision.
