Nightshade
Nobody is perfect. A l l i e isn’t afraid to admit that on her song, “Bad Habits, a standout from her debut album Nightshade which was released July 21. We’re all guilty of our own faults, but this Canadian singer/songwriter delves deeper and explores the reasons why we might be prone to this poor behavior. The album is only 10 tracks long but A l l i e establishes a coherent message across her songs: that sometimes our troubles aren’t our own and we must work to find the root of these problems to better ourselves and those around us.
A l l i e is a Toronto native, but her Jamaican-Canadian father raised her on a healthy supply of reggae, jazz and soul, the latter of which is particularly showing in her output. Although the Toronto r&b scene is very active right now with artists like Drake, The Weeknd and 6LACK leading the charge, she is fully capable of separating herself from her male contemporaries. Some of the synth parts bring to mind the g-funk style of West Coast hip-hop from the early ’90s but on the whole, her music is less trap-rap inspired than other comparable artists like Kehlani or SZA (though she does rap on the hypnotic cut “Move Like A Mystic”). Whether or not all of her influence comes from Canada, the country is proud to have her as a fixture in the music scene and the government awarded her with an arts grant, allowing to expand her sound even further. The shimmering synths and prominent bass pair well with her velvety vocals, which seem to envelop the listener like a blanket on a cold night. She speaks as though she were a childhood best friend or mentor, instructing you on how to better yourself without coming across as overbearing.
The album opens with “Let Her,” which finds A l l i e repeating the lines, “Give her your love, Know she deserves it, She is enough.” This serves as the perfect introduction for the album as A l l i e sings about a woman who is repeatedly told by men around her that she isn’t enough for them, developing the bad habit of not respecting herself. When she addresses that this isn’t her fault, she’s able to see her self-worth and is able to “dig up her pleasure like buried treasure.” She continues this theme on “The Reminder,” where she unapologetically and repeatedly states how she “doesn’t need your love.” As much as this album is a reminder of the importance of self-love, she is not entirely opposed to the idea of loving another person, as long as they can love you for who you are. This rings true on “All the Love” and “I Can’t Wait,” which both detail the joys of having someone there for you and how empowering love can be when you’ve found the right person. The album ties together well with the final track “Wildcat,” a single released earlier this year. It finds A l l i e laying it all out for her past lovers, ensuring they take full responsibility for the tolls that her mental health had taken by being with them.
Nightshade can be a beautiful flower, but can also be incredibly toxic and thus, the perfect analogy to the album’s content. Despite the increasing amount of coverage that mental health care has received lately, it’s still rare for an artist to be so open with feelings. A l l i e makes it clear that not all love is treated equally, but once on the path towards self-actualization, the need to be validated by another dwindles.

“Unreality” describes the condition in which we all find ourselves, sometimes more apparently than at other moments. Unreality is timeless, but in the current Zeitgeist, it seems more timely than ever.
“Unreality” is also the title of the debut album by Andrew Cohen & Light Coma.
Andrew Cohen & Light Coma is the new rock band for Andrew Cohen, guitarist of Silkworm and Bottomless Pit, backed up by Chicago veterans Light Coma. The group is driven by a dual guitar attack, but is not as heavy metal as that description sounds.
The collaboration highlights Cohen’s skills as a songwriter, with his recognizable touch for balladry, pathos, and the poetry of the mundane. Light Coma call to mind Crazy Horse or the Magnolia Electric Company, matching crisp distortion with the sober cadences of a tall old man on his way to the hardware store again. AC/LC’s arrangements afford the players substantial dynamic range. Cohen can whisper and wail with the best of them; Light Coma match him instrumentally with every turn.

Ten years after the live album São João Vivo on the same topic, Gilberto Gil again celebrates June’s popular saints festivities on the buoyant Fé na Festa. Such festivities were brought from Portugal and became an important part of Brazilian culture, especially the cult of São João (Saint John) in the northeast region. The music associated with these festivities is typically performed with instruments brought by (or derived from) the Portuguese colons, such as the accordion, violin, triangle, cavaquinho, and sanfona. While Gilberto Gil has an international reputation as a musical revolutionary, thank to his tropicalista origins, he is also a superb classicist, as his many projects in Brazilian folk music can attest. Contrary to the aforementioned live album, Fé na Festa is mostly made of new compositions by Gil, rather than standards. In this respect, this brilliant collection of xotes, xaxados, and baiãos offers further proof that Gil can effortlessly match the masters of the genre as a popular composer. The first half of the album was written entirely by Gil, and it includes songs that combine the regional dances with his trademark philosophical musings, such as "Não Tenho Medo da Vida," or with his very contemporary take on sexual liberation on the utterly delightful "O Livre-Atirador e a Pegadora" — the album’s chosen single and sure to become a Gil classic, with impish lyrics of bemused tolerance and understanding. It reads like a Stephin Merritt song minus the sordid irony, if you can imagine that. The last six tracks, on the other hand, feature a segue of four songs by other composers and two collaborations on the same spirit: simple, beautiful songs about São João, music, and love. These include a tribute to king of baião Luiz Gonzaga, as well as a great remake of "Norte da Saudade" from Gil’s 1977 masterpiece Refavela, and all are unreservedly charming, as is the entire Fé na Festa. True, this album may not have the ambition of Gil’s best work, but it shares the quintessence of what makes him such an universal artist: the celebration of the joy of making music. Lovingly recommended.

Began playing and recording professionally at age fifteen in Lisbon, Portugal. Went to the USA at age eighteen to study music.

Kansas (U.S.A.) in 1985 and received a post-graduate diploma in Film-scoring from Berklee College of Music in Boston (U.S.A.) in 1987. Currently undergoing a doctorate degree in Human Sciences.
Studied trumpet under professors Dr. Roger Stoner, Greg Hopkins
and attended seminars with Wynton Marsalis, Anthony Plog and Allen Vizutti.
Performed as a leader of his own group and as a sideman in different clubs and festivals in the U.S, Europe, Asia and Africa.
Played and recorded sessions with musicians such as: Jimmy Mosher, Aldo Romano, Tete Montoliu, Maceo Parker and the legendary drummer Walter Perkins.
Appears as guest soloist with singers Mariza and Rui Veloso.
Received the "Art Farmer Performance Award" (U.S.A. 1984), as well as "Best Soloist 1990" award at the International Jazz Festival of Guetxo (Spain), where his group was also awarded the "Best Group Award". He was also awarded the "Best Jazz Musician of the Year 1996, Award" from the National Portuguese Radio (RDP).

Consisting of songs performed on her short-lived BBC television series, The Sandie Shaw Supplement was a very mixed bag, reflecting the repertoire of the all-around entertainer that she was apparently trying to become. The renditions of pop standards are okay, and the covers of pop-rock hits like “Satsifaction,” “Homeward Bound,” and “Route 66” mediocre-to-embarrassing; there are also some tunes like “Change of Heart” that are reasonable continuations of her pure pop singles of the mid-’60s. It’s a very uneven effort–selected tracks will be enjoyed by her fan club, but it will convert few new listeners to her cause. The CD reissue on RPM adds eight tracks from 1968-69 singles, mixing competent Chris Andrews-penned throwbacks to the vintage Shaw sound with some of her worst material (the vaudevillian “Show Me,” an ill-conceived cover of “Those Were the Days”). But one of the singles, 1969’s “Monsieur Dupont,” would be her last big British hit.

The Palomars perform original and cover songs in the musical style of 1940s and 50s rockabilly and western swing music which is very danceable and energetic.
“Supper Club Riot” is the band’s second album release. The album contains 13 rockin’ and swingin’ tracks, seven of which are written by the band in a traditional style. The band is heavily influenced by themes from 1940s Film Noir and 1950s Science Fiction as you can see by glancing at the titles and of course, the pulp fiction-influenced album cover art for “Supper Club Riot”.
