Black Grape formed from the ashes of Madchester heroes the Happy Mondays, defying expectations by bagging a number one album with their debut LP, It’s Great When You’re Straight…Yeah.
The album was released during the height of Britpop in 1994, and Black Grape – which included the Mondays’ Shaun Ryder and Bez alongside rappers Paul “Kermit” Leveridge and Carl “Psycho” McCarthy and a new band – were the odd ones out who shouldn’t have made it to the top. Theirs was a shambolic hodgepodge of styles, from acid house and indie rock to psychedelic pop, reggae and hip-hop, which was recklessly joyous in contrast to the carefully plundered nostalgia of the Cool Britannia brat pack. Black Grape’s 1997 sophomore Stupid Stupid Stupid didn’t quite hit the same highs of their debut, and the band dissolved the following year. Now Ryder and Kermit are back with a new Black Grape album in 2017, which has been spearheaded by a Trump (and Hillary Clinton)-skewering single called Everything You Know Is Wrong. It’s a worthy sentiment, but calling Hillary “an old bird who fucks up on her computer” is pretty offensive, and those dial-up internet tones just sound naff. Elsewhere, Set The Grass On Fire sounds like the precocious lovechild of Beck, Mark E. Smith and the Austin Powers soundtrack, while Whisky, Wine and Ham tries, but fails, to delve into laid-back lounge jazz.
There are some enjoyable moments, notably the downtempo slink of Money Burns and the organ-led psychedelia of the Happy Mondays-esque Nine Lives. But Ryder’s rhyming wears thin over the course of the album. “He can outrun a rabbit/ find something and grab it,” he barks on Shame, while sing-speaking: “I’m digging a hole/ I’m out of control” on Losing Sleep.
The heady mishmash of styles that helped Black Grape stand out from their peers is a returning point of interest, but this record lacks the glue that helped their debut stick. Throughout Pop Voodoo, Shaun Ryder’s lyrics often descend into absurdist territory, and the album is simply lacking in bangers to back up the banter.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis – Wind River (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2017)

Frequent collaborators Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have teamed once again to score the new film Wind River. Marking Sicario scribe Taylor Sheridan’s directorial debut, the thriller stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen as a game trapper and rookie FBI agent, respectively. Together they investigate a young girl’s murder on Wyoming’s remote Wind River Indian Reservation.
The stark and remote setting was where Cave and Ellis found most of the inspiration for their score. “The soundtrack to the beautiful Wind River was first and foremost the incessant wind or the grieving silence of the snow,” the pair said in a press release. “Amid those elemental forces, we made a kind of ghost score where voices whisper and choirs rise up and die away and electronics throb and pulse.”

Preview: Toli and the Femm Nameless “See Line” EP Reissued
It often feels like a blessing when music is rediscovered and makes its long-overdue foray into the world. This is the case for the eight-member all-female Brooklyn Afrobeat band Toli and the Femm Nameless’s demo recording from 2003, which has been unearthed and is finally available to stream. Although the recording is now 14 years old, it still sounds fresh and will have you up and dancing in no time.
The three-song EP starts off with a cover of Nina Simone’s “See Line Woman,” done in an Afrobeat style that would make Fela grin. The ensemble features a flautist, trombonist, trumpeter, as well as many additional instrumentalists who keep you intrigued as to what sounds will pop up next over the course of the seven-minute track. The second cut, “Talk Da Shit,” is half the time of the first but it’s filled with call-outs to the government and the empty promises that they make. Finally, the B-side, “Deaf Ears,” tones down the energy as the track ambles along with a bass line groove. It serves well as a closer and eases the listener down from the high of the first two cuts. These songs will make a great addition to your party playlists.

Azna de L’Ader – Zabaya (2016)
Though they’re not very well known outside of their country, Azna de L’Ader are one of Niger’s pioneering rock bands. They’ve been playing together in different incarnations for over 40 years, mainly in and around the Tahoua region of Niger.
Azna’s music is a jolting take on 1970s-leaning psychedelic rock, including heavily-fuzzed out guitar solos and crashing percussion, that lives in a similar stylistic sphere as Zamrock. The band is lead by Mona, a shredding guitarist who’s been its only constant member over the decades and has been dubbed the “Hendrix of the Sahara.” Despite being highly prominent in the area, they barely recorded because of a lack of studios.

Speaking about the Western influences on his music, Mona explains that it all ties back to his ancestors in the album’s liner notes: “When the Europeans took blacks as slaves in the US, our ancestors brought their culture with them. They mixed their music with modern instruments, and they created the blues, and that invented rock ‘n’ roll, rhythm and blues, jazz, and everything. The blues comes from here. We sing, we cry, and we go into trance. We make Bori, we do Voodoo. Our ancestors brought this to the US. Little by little, [the music] captured everyone.”

Nick Heyward – Woodland Echoes (2017)

Nick Heyward best known as the frontman for Haircut 100 and his solo success in the ’80s and ’90s. Woodland Echoes is his first solo album in 18 years. Recordings for what would become Nick’s ninth album started in his son Oliver Heyward’s studio, continued in award-winning producer and engineer Ian Shaw’s boat-studio in Key West, Florida and were completed back in the UK at The Who and Oasis’ drummer Zac Starkey’s recording studio. The album was affected by Florida’s abundant beauty and Nick’s passion for the natural world, making Woodland Echoes an album of exceptional warmth and intimacy, that sounds – as he says – “like it should be on vinyl”.
