Field Report: 50th Annual Loiza Festival in NYC

Over the weekend of July 28, thousands of guests gathered in celebration of Afro-Latino culture in New York during the latest edition of the “Fiestas Tradicionales en Honor a Santiago Apóstol,” fondly known as the Loiza Festival, after the Puerto Rican city that inspired the festival 50 years ago.

The three-day cultural blast brought Afro-Latino and African diaspora practices to East Harlem–El Barrio. Performances by Milteri Tucker and Bombazo; Danza Fiesta; Mateo y Cumbalaya; Bronx Charanga, Son del Monte, Johnny “Dandy” Rodriguez (of the Tito Puente orchestra), Legacy Women, Los Pleneros de la 21, Nelson Ramirez y Herencia de Mi Tambo, and Flaco Navaja and the Razor Blades, among many others. Bomba y plena, salsa, handicrafts and foods rooted in Afro-Puerto Rican fare transported festival goers to the city of Loiza, Puerto Rico, founded by cimarrones or maroons.

Among the festival highlights was the renaming of the street and unveiling of the street sign in honor of Aida Perez, one of the founders of the Loiza Festival. The naming took place at 105th St. and Lexington Ave., the original site of the festival, that will now serve as a lasting reminder of the Afro-Boricua roots alive in El Barrio.

Among those in attendance at the unveiling were Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez, Aurora Flores (communications specialist for speaker of the New York City Council Melissa Mark-Viverito, a long-time resident of El Barrio), as well as Debbie Quiñones, vice chair of Community Board 11 in El Barrio; as well as other leaders and members of the community.

On Sunday afternoon, guests honored African ancestors with the traditional Processional of the Saints. A hallmark of the festivities in Puerto Rico, the procession serves as a bridge for Afro-descendants in the Caribbean and in the United States. The practice of marching with the saints made for a moving and liberating experience that confirmed the power of celebration in African diaspora communities.

Since 2012, the original organizers of the festival, Los Hermanos Fraternos de Loiza, have been working in partnership with the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) and in association with Taino Towers to strengthen and grow the festival each year. The result has been an event that celebrates local artists and maintains a global sensitivity. Proof of this is the yearly tradition of inviting musicians of another country with African roots to perform at the event. This year, the honor went to Cuban performers, Melvis Santa y Ellas Son.

Connecting past traditions to the realities of the African diaspora in the city, the Loiza Festival offered an intergenerational audience a quintessentially New York experience.

Dale Crover – The Fickle Finger Of Fate (2017)

the debut solo album from the enigmatic legend that is Dale Crover. Amongst his 30+ year career as one half of the essential Melvins roster, Crover has contributed to countless albums ranging from platinum-plated classics (ahem, Nirvana) to seminal cult LPs. However, up until this point Crover’s solo efforts have only appeared once in a blood moon, limited to the Melvins 1992 KISS-themed solo EP, and a couple intermittent 7″ releases. The Fickle Finger Of Fate marks Crover’s first calculated, full length solo effort. But let’s be clear: this is not a drum record. The album features a perplexingly diverse batch of songs that recall the best moments of the Melvins catalog. With 90% of all instruments played by Crover, and recorded by longtime engineer Toshi Kasai, the album is sure to tickle the temporal lobes of Melvins devotees. Sonically, the album ranges from slightly microwaved heaviness, to surprisingly chill Pink Floyd-tinged ballads, to Max Roach-meets-Throbbing-Gristle drum experimentations, to good old fashioned Andy Kaufman-style head-fuckkery. Though consistently otherworldly, The Fickle Finger Of Fate is surprisingly approachable dare we say, catchy. But even at it’s most anthemic, you won’t be able to shake the feeling that a sinister ambience is hovering just beneath the surface.

Afropop Premiere: Chicago Afrobeat Project’s “Race Hustle”

Afropop is pleased to premiere Chicago Afrobeat Project’s new single, “Race Hustle,” from the upcoming album What Goes Up.

Born out of a jam in west side Chicago in 2002, the band now marks a milestone in its career with this release. When they flew Fela Kuti’s original drummer Tony Allen in from Paris, hoping to gain some knowledge straight from the source, through several events including workshops, the group was originally planning to record two songs with him as well. But realizing the vibe in the studio was so strong—playing with CAbP reminded Allen of sessions with Fela himself, he said—the master drummer decided that the music had to keep flowing. They recorded a 10-song album together, resulting in the first Tony Allen collaboration in North America.

Chicago Afrobeat Project

In “Race Hustle,” an overwhelming atmosphere of urban struggle rises from chanting protestors introducing the song. Singer JC Brooks tells us stories of resistance in the city, while the fusion of Allen’s experienced, solid beats with deep synth waves and intricate horn lines provides a perfectly fitting background.

Watch out for Chicago Afrobeat Project’s next single, “No Bad News,” to be released on Aug. 25, and for our review of the full album, What Goes Up, out on Sept. 15.

Tony Allen releases his own debut album for Blue Note Records, The Source, on Sept. 8.

Nuits d’Afrique 2017 Wraps Up

Cameroonian saxophonist and living legend, Manu Dibango, told North Country Public Radio that the most important African music festival “isn’t in New York or Paris or London, it’s here in Montreal.” He was, of course, referring to the Nuits d’Afrique festival, which just wrapped up its 31st iteration on Sunday. While it’s going to take a lifetime more of music festival attendance research to evaluate Dibango’s claims, after five days at Nuits d’Afrique, I can personally attest to its importance to Montreal.

The morning of my first full day at the festival, I was chatting with Bïa. The singer is a transplant to Quebec from Brazil and for the second time she was working as the festival’s spokesperson. One of her favorite aspects of Nuits d’Afrique was that “every community [in Montreal] that has somehow an African root is represented.”

Abdel Kadiri

“There’s all the modern hybrid groups that have one foot in Africa, but their head is in Europe; maybe it’s DJs; maybe they come from North America or South America—Colombia or Brazil,” she said. “Everything is mixed and that opens it up…we’re trying to make everybody aware how it represents our way of being in Montreal. It’s a city that is really multicultural and there is a diversity that lives together.”

As the festival proceeded, artists from 34 countries took the stage, and whenever they called out their country—“Anyone out there from Guadeloupe?” “—from Chile?” “—from Morocco?”—they were met with a roaring approval. Indeed, they were there.

Jean-François Léger and Zal Sissokho

Along with the diversity of nationalities, there was an incredible diversity of style. I didn’t even know that “Quebeçois bossa nova” was a thing that existed, but Jean Francois Leger added it into his show, which was a history of bossa nova. He also found space for kora player Zal Sissokho to join him on stage. Kora played over a bossa nova beat is unsurprisingly gorgeous.

Although Seun Kuti wasn’t able to come, Kobo Town showed up and demonstrated that calypso music can come from Toronto.

Djmawi Africa

Bonsa did a little demonstration on the koanni one day and played the main stage with his band the next. In a chat with Afropop, he explained he was representing something even more specific than a country.

Bonsa playing the koanni

“I used the rhythm specifically from my village from my region of Burkina Faso in the east to create my own songs,” he said, explaining the koanni’s ritualistic role. “It’s the instrument we’d use for marriages, to sing to welcome the lady coming to the house. It’s the instrument we use when people go hunting.”

Admiral T

The Francophone world can seem like sort of a parallel universe to the English speaker. I saw Admiral T at the Afrojam showcase in New York on a small stage in January, where he and his dancers had to pull the small crowd to their feet. In Montreal, no one needed to be told to dance; the crowd was positively pulsing to Admiral T’s hip-hop-meets-gwo-ka-meets-zouk melange. Even after the beat stopped after the encore, the crowd stayed in place while the singer freestyled and hugged his fans.

Javi Mendez y su Sandunga

The days began with workshops and demonstrations, and rolled into live music that lasted past 11. I would get back to my hotel exhausted and happy, with my recorder full of music and interviews, the day having gone incredibly smoothly thanks to a festival staff that was constantly going above and beyond for some American journalist. Let’s do it again next year!

Fairport Covention – Come All Ye – The First Ten Years (1968 to 1978) (2017)

While some artists are credited with starting a music scene, Fairport Convention is responsible for forging an entire new genre. As the progenitors of British folk rock, they took traditional music and electrified it, paving the way for bands like The Pogues, Flogging Molly and U2.

Since first coming onto the scene during 1967’s Summer of Love, the group has one of the most impressive catalogues in rock even with their changing personnel, with over 30 studio albums and 20 live albums. As this year marks the 50th anniversary of their first live performance, the group has announced an extensive 7 CD box set titled, Come All Ye – The First 10 Years, set for release on 28 July.

Compiled by Andrew Batt, the curator behind the musical stage show, ‘The Lady – A Tribute To Sandy Denny’, the collection captures Fairport’s first 10 years, beginning with their debut for Polydor in 1968, through all of their classic albums for Island Records and finishing with tracks from their two albums for Vertigo, The Bonny Bunch of Roses and Tippers Tales that spans 121 tracks in total. Of those, 55 are previously unreleased, culling from single B-sides, BBC Radio Sessions, TV performances, and the audio for an entire concert at The Fairfield Halls.

This feller is Simon Mason who was at one point ‘drugdealer to the stars’ in the maelstrom that was Brit Pop but has since got clean and started to write his own music. Not surprising then that his music has a sort of come down feel and could be compared with the mature and mid paced later work of Paul Weller.

On a critical note, just occasionally one or two of the songs start to sound a bit too similar for my liking but overall Dry and High comes from the heart, is passionate, ballsy and gets my vote. An album that’s raucous, high-energy, but with moments of pure vulnerability.
