VA – Surinam Funk Force (2016)

Surinam As a former Dutch colony, Surinam has had a connection to The Netherlands since the 17th century. Most albums cut by Surinamese artists in the late ’70s were either recorded in Dutch studios or pressed by Dutch record companies, which makes it easier for Amsterdam’s DJs to dig up with these funk gems. Tom Trago remixed the leather-clad, Prince-via-Surinam standout Sumy a few years back, and Rush Hour co-founder Antal Heitlager unearthed ten sumptuous Surinamese joints for the compilation Surinam! Boogie & Disco Funk From The Surinamese Dance Floors ’76 – ’83.
Four years on, Heitlager follows the collection with Surinam Funk Force, finding another ten tracks and artists, with Sumy being the only holdover. But the risk that’s run in going back to the well…

  108 MB  320 ** FLAC

…of one specific musical era in a small country is that there are bound to be diminishing returns. Or maybe, after years of compilations that cull boogie, disco and funk from Ghana, Brazil, Nigeria, South Africa and the Caribbean, the exotic novelty of hearing African-American dance music filtered through another culture’s sensibilities starts to wear off. The charming sound of such bands mastering funk and soul doesn’t diminish the grooves, but some comps leave little trace of the indigenous cultures themselves.

Still, Surinam Funk Force is not without its charms. The speedy drums and gentle flute of Ronald Snijders’ “Kaseko Attack” makes for an alluring speedball of funk and new age. The slinky breakdown of Jam Band 80’s “Jammin'” is choice, and hearing Sumy’s falsetto atop the slow and silky “The Funky ‘G’ (Only Comes At Night)” is a nice change of pace.

On the other hand, Steve Watson’s “Born to Boogie” is charming but not the most original sentiment, as it’s been uttered by everyone from T. Rex to Hank Williams Jr. The bands straddle rock guitar and disco slink on songs like “Wakka Mang” and “Love Dance,” but the grooves are so short-lived (only one song passes four minutes) that they don’t quite take effect.

Three long years of anticipation have preceded San Francisco’s psych-blasted, starry-eyed weirdos The Fresh & Onlys’ return with Wolf Lie Down, their 6th LP and debut for Sinderlyn Records. Building on the band’s literate guitar-pop arcana and seamlessly incorporating their pastoral desert-noir sensibility, Wolf Lies Down finds the band equally at home with anthemic garage rock burners and the brooding western twang. This new chapter in the elusive world of The Fresh & Onlys is a triumphant return to form as underground jangle titans.

Afro-Dominicana: The Other Dominican Republic

0
0

In the 1930s, infamous Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered the burning of the country’s palos drums, hoping to erase the powerful vestiges of African culture in the Dominican Republic. Luckily for us, the breakneck, trance-inducing sound of palos still reverberates at Afro-syncretic religious parties across the Caribbean nation almost a century later. This week, Afropop revisits the home of styles such as merengue and bachata, but this time we’ll be looking towards the most deeply African side of Dominican music—little known outside of the island. Afro-Dominican music is a secret treasure, filled with virtuosic drumming styles, heart-stopping grooves, and mystic dance parties. We’ll listen to traditional genres like palos, salve, and gaga, a uniquely Dominican take on rara music from neighboring Haiti. Throughout, we’ll be looking at artists who have drawn on Afro-Dominican styles to make infectious pop music, from wizened veterans of the folklore movement such as Luis Dias, to a host of hip young bands who use Afro-inspired rock, reggae and hip-hop to redefine what it means to be Dominican. We’ll also check out the Afro-Dominican scene in New York City—home to more than a half-million Dominicans—where we’ll find a Dominican gaga group in Brooklyn that is mending cultural fences at a weekly Haitian celebration.

Kelley Stoltz – Que Aura (2017)

320 kbps | 103 MB | LINKS

When Kelley Stoltz made the jump to Castle Face with his 2015 album, In Triangle Time, he got weird. Or maybe he already was. Either way, something about the way time and space coincided meant that Stoltz made the loosest, oddest record of his long, mostly buttoned-down career as a pop craftsman. He added synths, played around with structure, and made choices he may not have in the past. For his next album on the label, 2017’s Que Aura, Stoltz took another leap, this time a deeper dive into the sounds of his beloved ’80s. Long an Echo & the Bunnymen fan to the point where he recorded his own version of Crocodiles, their debut album, Stoltz actually joined the Bunnymen as their touring second guitarist. This gig seems to have unleashed something within Stoltz, and along with his trademark ’60s-inspired shaggy pop, there are side trips into space rock, warped synth pop, epic Echo-y psych, and even some off-kilter disco. Through it all, Stoltz’s way with a hook means that no matter what sounds he dresses the songs in, they are always one sharp hook away from slicing up the speakers. Slick, keyboard-heavy tracks (“Feather Falling”) and insistent synth-driven songs (“Same Pattern”) sound just as good as the jumpy rockers (“I’m Here for Now”) and oddball pop tunes (“Walking Against the Greenlight”), and even the total left turn, the slinky disco number (“Empty Kicks”) ends up sounding really good (and a little like the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street”). Stoltz has always been a first-rate arranger and producer, but with his last couple records he really seems to have hit his stride. Que Aura is the richest, most diverse, and interesting-sounding album he’s done yet, with the songs to match. It might be easy to overlook someone who’s been making solid music for as long as Stoltz has, to maybe take him for granted a bit, but doing that would be a mistake and one would miss some truly fun, weird, and inspired modern pop.

Will Hoge – Anchors (2017)

Recorded with an all-star band comprised of drummer Jerry Roe (Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, Darius Rucker), bassist Dominic Davis (Jack White, Wanda Jackson), and guitarists Brad Rice (Son Volt, Ryan Adams) and Thom Donovan (Lapush, Ruby Amanfu), the album is a prime showcase for Hoge s searing, gritty vocals, as well as his remarkable gift for crafting complex characters with real emotional depth and plainspoken profundity. Over the course of eleven tracks, Hoge weaves elements of vintage country, literate folk, and heartland rock into a passionate, genre-busting masterpiece, one that offers an unflinching portrait of the messy challenges of adulthood and the ways in which we preserve (or don’t) through hard times.
