Last summer in Elliott Sharp’s recording studio in Manhattan, New York guitarist Sharp spent a day with guitar colleague Mary Halvorson and another with Marc Ribot, legendary guitarist of Tom Waits, The Lounge Lizards and Marianne Faithful. The result was a series of recordings that could only be created by friends. They represent the great art of guitar playing by three exceptional musicians looking for new sonic adventures in search of the sound of our time. “I hear in their playing both a step into an unknown future and wild growth from a deep past,” says Elliott Sharp. “The contradiction is resolved in improvisation – the transcendent sonic path of the now.”

Altered Five Blues Band – Charmed & Dangerous (2017)

Blind Pig Records is pleased to announce the signing of the Altered Five Blues Band. The Milwaukee-based quintet is the first artist to join the roster of the esteemed blues/roots label since it was acquired by The Orchard, one of the largest independent distributors in the world. The band’s label debut, Charmed & Dangerous, was produced by multi-Grammy-winner Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi, George Thorogood, James Cotton) and will be released worldwide August 11.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, frontman Jeff Taylor’s voice is “gloriously gritty.” Downbeat raves that Jeff Schroedl’s “live-wire guitar reaches the high bar of mixed invention and fluidity,” while Blues Bytes magazine declares the group features “the funkiest rhythm section outside of Memphis.”

Charmed & Dangerous is the eagerly awaited follow-up to the group’s 2014 album Cryin’ Mercy, which reached #3 in the iTunes blues store, hit #1 on the Roots Music Report blues chart, and won “Best Self-Released CD” at the 2015 International Blues Challenge. The new album features 13 tracks including one inspired by legendary Delta bluesman Robert Johnson entitled “Three Forks.” The song features music, adapted with permission of Johnson’s publisher, from the seminal classic “Crossroads,” plus a guest harmonica performance by Steve Cohen. Hambridge also plays drums on all 13 tracks, adding even more energy and authenticity to the record. Videos will also be released for the songs “On My List to Quit,” “Eighth Wonder,” and the title track.

Suzanne Santo – Ruby Red (2017)

$

320 kbps | 102 MB | LINKS

It’s fairly difficult to introduce something new to the narrative of romantic dissolution, but Suzanne Santo’s first solo project, Ruby Red accomplishes just that. It welcomes a new emotional landscape for heartache. While Santo struggles through the stages of grief and anger, both in and after love, in place of cliches there’s rare accountability and self awareness that is relatable and satisfying.

In the vein of Margot Price and Miranda Lambert, she grieves poetically without a filter. Ruby Red is sexy and sad all at once as she commands, “Don’t water down my whiskey babe.” On the uptempo growlers like “Blood On Your Knees”, “Love Fucked Up” and “The Wrong Man” there’s hand-on-the-hip defiance as she unabashedly announces the pain she’s endured, empowered by her incredible range and pounding instrumentals; fiery anthems joined with pitiless storytelling that find the perfect balance of acrimony and vulnerability.

Paired with the tremendous power of her strongest vocal showcase, Santo’s romantic exhaustion is visceral here. She writes about the physiological and mental fatigue she’s siphoned through her heart and psyche. “The Wrong Man” comes through like a dark hymnal as she declares the anger in her mouth and the sorrow in her bones. In “Yours Or Mine” she goes on to say, “I don’t want your sadness tucking me,” a commentary on the power of emotional memory that follows her like a phantom limb long after the physical effects have gone.

While the record is full of metaphors about love, it isn’t about romance. If you’re really paying attention, it’s about how a person drinks up love; drunk, high on a cocktail of pain and passion. It’s about the numbing agents used to avoid the pain, and the introspection and consciousness required to recover from it.

On, “Best Outta Me” she does something songwriters rarely do, she takes her pain a step deeper as she sings, “I see it in my family tree yes I do, all those murderous words that’ll cut you in two, and I don’t want it in me, that haunted history that bruises the fruit black and blue,” a plea to herself to break the cycle she was born into. The entire track exemplifies her canny ability to translate her condition, “And the words I shell out at you the night before are still scattered like shrapnel all over the floor, and I’m sweeping and I’m dusting and desperately busting my back to get you back through my door.”

Produced by genre-bending collaborator, Butch Walker, the studio chemistry spills into the record as the instrumentals expertly match Santo’s shifting emotions as she swings from anger to aching against melancholic strings and electric guitar. A smart blend of moody pop and alternative Americana, Ruby Red offers variance that’s unpredictable without ever feeling out of order.

While the record sways like an emotional rocking horse, seesawing between strength and despair, Santo winds it down with ripe self-awareness in, standout track, “Better Than That”, acknowledging her self-imposed suffocation, she shifts the focus from another and steps into awareness when she sings the goal, “I want to hold onto him and still hold onto me.”

A good record leaves you feeling fatigued, deeply touched by the emotion that transfers through in each track, and Ruby Red does that with each rung of the album, climbing down from anger to resolution with grace. For a long time, there’s been an accepted idea of how women lament heartache, with exaggerated longing, attachment and jealousy. Often coined “needy” or “crazy” there’s a strong push for women to act unaffected by pain to avoid such social branding. Santo takes ownership and power back with crass and candor, introducing shameless, self aware dialogue that opens the door for conversation that leads to real healing.

Afropop Worldwide is pleased to premiere “Porro Maracatu,” a hot new single from the fiery pan-Latin American quartet, LADAMA. The track is from their forthcoming eponymous debut album, the product of three years of production across continents and countries. It’s a funky jam, flavored with northeastern Brazil’s syncopated, drum-heavy maracatu music and powered by the mighty voices of LADAMA’s four members. Have a listen right here or find the track on your preferred streaming service. If you’re already moved, their album is available for pre-order on their Bandcamp page.

In this track, we’ve got sounds heard across Latin America, like that rhythmic accordion flair and a guïro laying down a cumbia beat, evidence of LADAMA’s wide-ranging origins. The four masterful Latinx women that drive this project–Lara Klaus, Daniela Serna, Mafer Bandola and Sara Lucas–have come together from Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and the U.S., merging and reimagining the sounds they love: cumbia, maracatu, onda nueva and joropo, with shades of soul, r&b and pop. Together, they’ve churned up a highly danceable, soulful sound rooted in the Afro-Latinx musics of their homes. They move fluidly between Spanish, English and Portuguese, from the sounds of the plains of Venezuela to the Colombia coast–they seek to break down the borders between people and music by engaging in this important and powerful kind of cross-cultural communication.

LADAMA’s Lara Klaus has this to say: “We are all deeply inspired by the rhythms and traditions of our homelands…From the first time we played together, I felt a palpable shift in the way I relate to music, and see it as a powerful tool for not only energizing people but for change and transformation.” The foursome first worked together in the U.S., through the OneBeat fellowship, an initiative of the U.S. State Department to bring together young artists from around the world to “collaboratively write, produce, and perform original music, and develop strategies for arts-based social engagement.”

LADAMA hit on something strong when they came together. The group took their passion for music and incubated projects striving to “engage youth and other women in their respective communities in the process of  sound design, composition and audio production.” They’ve worked with young artists in New York, Colombia and beyond, teaching music and helping to cultivate creative, personal expression through communal music-making. They also are pushing back against the gender inequality and unequal representation of women in music education and the music industry. LADAMA’s Sara Lucas says, We understand how rare and powerful it is to find other musicians who simultaneously challenge and inspire each other…and are deeply connected in our mission to empower other women by using music to shatter structures and boundaries…Music, as a form of expression, is one of the most enlivening tools that people can use to heal, and inspire themselves and their communities.”

Not only is this dynamic quartet working some magic with youth around the Americas, they are also crafting some excellently funky and inspiring music themselves–and if “Porro Maracatu” is any evidence, we have a lot to look forward to in LADAMA’s upcoming debut album, to be released Sept. 8 on Six Degrees Records. Paul Draper was the frontman of Mansun – one of the most iconic bands of the late ’90s. Over the course of three albums (a fourth issued posthumously), they achieved something unique – after fostering a fervent cult following, they managed to maintain critical and commercial success with a series of intensely radio friendly yet increasingly experimental records.Spooky Action is the result of a decade of thinking, tinkering, writing, recording and focusing.

The record’s eleven tracks veer from warped voodoo psych (Don’t Poke the Bear) to glistening synthetic soul (Things People Want); from warped, razor wire rock’n’roll (Grey House) to glorious widescreen analogue pop music (Jealousy Is A Powerful Emotion). Collectively, they represent Paul’s strongest, most consistent set of songs to date – half a lifetime’s work condensed into just over an hour of perfectly formed music.
