Henry Warwick - Something Borrowed (2014)
Henry Warwick, compositor de música electrónica y artista multidisciplinar ha tenido la amabilidad de darme a conocer su música y os invito a que conozcáis su labor con este trabajo que me ha parecido muy interesante. Está activo desde mediados de los años 80. Nació en New Jersey pero ha vivido durante muchos años en San Francisco hasta que en 2007 decidió mudarse a Toronto donde actualmente enseña Teoría del Medio, síntesis del sonido, New Media y Producción de audio.
Fundó su propio sello discográfico, Kether Records, que funciona en Bandcamp de tal manera que si te gusta lo que compone y quieres donarle algo, te estará agradecido.
Es el primer disco de una serie de tres donde plasma su experiencia de 25 años en la creación de atmósferas y texturas sonoras. Todas las composiciones están realizadas con sonidos "prestados" como dice el propio autor, provenientes de presets de sintetizadores, cds de ejemplo... todos ellos convenientemente manipulados mediante programas de ordenador. A lo largo de sus siete temas te irás adentrando en una mezcla de ambient con ecos vanguardistas e industriales en ocasiones que hacen recordar a veces a una banda sonora de una película de ciencia ficción.

Preview: Brooklyn’s Caribbean Carnival Week
For New Yorkers, neighbors and lovers of Caribbean fêtes far and wide, you’ve got a lot to look forward to this week. Yes, it’s time again for Brooklyn’s world-famous Labor Day Parade–A.K.A. the West Indian American Carnival Parade–and all of the tireless festivities that surround it. This year is a particularly special celebration: 2017 marks the Golden Jubilee anniversary of these festivities, bringing the party to the Crown Heights neighborhood for every one of those 50 years. In the days leading up to Monday’s early morning J’Ouvert bacchanal and the massive, million-strong parade down Brooklyn’s grand Eastern Parkway thoroughfare, there will be a series of star-studded concerts–reggae, dancehall, soca, calypso and more–and a heated steel pan competition behind the Brooklyn Museum.
For several months, members from all Caribbean nations have been prepping extravagant masquerade costumes for the parade, practicing sweeping steel pan arrangements every night and bringing Brooklyn’s party energy to a boil. To get a sense of what this week is all about, check out our 2016 program, Carnival in Brooklyn. Right now, we’ll give you a rundown of what to look forward to in this week’s festivities. All of the events, other than the Calypso Rose show at Stage 48, J’Ouvert and the Labor Day Parade, take place behind the Brooklyn Museum, with an entrance on Washington Ave. Head to the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) page (or one of the participating New York Caribbean restaurants) for tickets, which run between $35 and $125.
Wed., Aug. 30: Calypso Rose in concert
The Queen of Calypso, Calypso Rose will be taking the stage at Stage 48 in Manhattan with fellow Trinbagonians David Rudder, Angela Hunte, MX Prime and Ultimate Rejects, showing off the fruits of “Sweet, sweet T&T,” as David Rudder sings. Show is from 5 p.m.-11 p.m. Find tickets here.

Thurs., Aug. 31: Reggae Unda Di Stars!
To kick off the shows behind the Brooklyn Museum, this evening will be a lush lineup of reggae of many stripes. Up top on the list of “Reggae Ambassadors” is the legendary Jamaican reggae star Cocoa Tea, joined by Ghanaian dancehall artist Stonebwoy and Brooklyn’s own Nigerian-American Afrobeat/reggae singer Wunmi. This will be the first time the festivities have featured artists from the African continent. Tonight’s show will also commemorate the historic occasion of Bob Marley’s Labor Day appearance nearly 40 years ago. The West Indian American Carnival Day Association’s Rhea Smith says that this concert will honor the “memory of Bob Marley [who] in 1978, 1979, visited this very same stage behind the Brooklyn Museum for New York Carnival, where he debuted Uprising, the album…To commemorate, we will have Stephen Marley on behalf of his dad.” The concert will be hosted by the local Irie Jam Radio station and various DJs and presenters. Fri., Sept. 1: Summer Jam: ‘Stay in School’ Youth Fest
This show will be a salute to the youth, featuring talent from the local community and beyond, including the young Broadway star Shahadi Wright, the Medgar Evers College Prep School Contemporary Dance Company, Bantingua Arts Academy, Ifetayo Cultural Arts, the Roxborough Police Youth Club from Tobago and much more. Showtime from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. FREE.
The “Real” Brass Fest
Friday’s late-night concert is going to be hot as can be. It’s a soca music spectacle with an endless lineup, featuring 2017 Soca Monarch Ricardo Drue (from Antigua), Lyrikal (Trinidad), Farmer Nappy (Trinidad), Problem Child (St. Vincent), MX Prime (Trinidad), Blaxx (Trinidad), and much more. Hosted by MC Wassy. WIADCA’s Rhea Smith says that “it’ll be like you’re transported right back home to one of the pan yards or one of the big jam sessions for Carnival.” Doors at 6 p.m., Show from 7 p.m. – 3 a.m.
Sat., Sept. 2: Junior Carnival Parade
Come out and support the kids! This will be a pint-sized version of the Labor Day parade, featuring the youth in masquerade, live performances and the crowning of the Junior King and Queen. The parade begins at Kingston Ave./St. John’s Place, continues to Franklin Ave./President St. and ends at the Brooklyn Museum. WIADCA’s spokesperson Smith says, “the kids are so excited to get their costumes, put them on and parade through the streets just like the adults do. The revelry is going to be awesome!” Parade is from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Panorama 2017 Steel Orchestra Competition
Panorama is one of the most exciting parts of this week of fun. Massive steel pan orchestras from across Brooklyn and Queens come together after a summer of practicing to present their stunning, orchestral arrangements of soca hits. The winning band takes the championship crown and a cash prize. This year there are 10 bands competing, including visiting bands from St. Thomas and Philadelphia. Sun., Sept. 3: Dimanche Gras Grand Finale!
Closing out the concert series is this very exciting show featuring the King and Queen of Calypso, the Mighty Sparrow and Calypso Rose, who have reigned over the calypso world for decades. Joining the royal pair will be calypsonians and artists David Rudder, Swallow, Ras Iley, Natasha Wilson, Dane Gulston, Boodoosingh Tassa Drummers and the Sunshine Band. This is not a show to miss! Doors at 6 p.m., Show from 7 p.m. – 1 a.m.
Mon., Sept. 4: J’Ouvert
J’Ouvert (from the French for “daybreak”) is the early-morning bacchanal that leads up to the Labor Day Parade. It’s a raucous, rowdy fête that starts sometime in the wee hours of Monday morning and sprawls across Crown Heights until somewhere around 10 a.m. The party is more or less informal, organized by J’Ouvert City International, but not technically sanctioned by the city government. There’s a loose parade that makes its way down Flatbush Ave. and Empire Blvd. from the Central Brooklyn Public Library to the middle of Prospect Lefferts Garden. Here you’ll hear endless music blasting from speakers or made by various small steel bands or rhythm sections on wheels, see wild costumes from oil-smeared, devilish “jab jabs” to frilly, Victorian-style European garb, and likely get splattered with some paint. Please be careful and attentive to heated situations that might arise: J’Ouvert has unfortunately experienced occasional acts of violence in past years, which has been a source of pain and controversy (which you can hear all about in our 2016 program). As a result, the parade has officially been pushed up to daylight hours, to begin around 6 a.m., although the festivities will certainly begin earlier. For more info, check out this rundown.
Labor Day Carnival Parade 2017
This is the peak of the festivities, the moment when a million-plus people come out to flood the streets with music, color and fun. Huge masquerade–or mas–bands come out in full force and opulent costumes, slowly dancing their ways down Eastern Parkway from the far eastern edge of Crown Heights to the Brooklyn Museum by Grand Army Plaza. Everyone is decked out in feathers, sequins, jewels and more, with some hardcore masqueraders sporting enormous, 15-foot outfits carried on metal frames and wheels. Each mas band is accompanied by mammoth sound systems carried on the beds of tractor trailers as they make their trek, ending at the judging stage in front of the museum. The Parkway is lined with hundreds of thousands of revelers, eating, drinking, dancing and having all kinds of fun. For some pictures of the parade, check out our photo gallery from 2016. This year’s parade will have some new features, including viewing stands for senior citizen along the parade route, a celebration of Brooklyn mas fashion and Caribbean-American Pride Unity promoting HIV awareness/education. If you can’t make it to Trinidad for the ultimate carnival, Brooklyn’s your next best bet.

PAUL MOUNSEY:"Tha na laithean a'dol seachad"
La ciudad escocesa de Glasgow fue desde los 80 un hervidero de jóvenes músicos con nuevas ideas. A las emergentes bandas de rock y pop se unieron otros conjuntos que optaban por ritmos más tradicionales, como por ejemplo Capercaillie. En este género folclórico, del norte del país procedían Runrig o la ruda propuesta de Wolfstone, y en los 90, desde Edimburgo, llegaron los renovadores Shooglenifty, que se unían a la eterna sapiencia de, por ejemplo, Phil Cunningham. Desde más lejos llegaron los triunfos de otros músicos escoceses, como Alasdair Fraser (afincado en California, donde fundó Culburnie Records), Johnny Cunningham (inolvidables sus encuentros estadounidenses con los hermanos irlandeses O'Domhnaill en las bandas Relativity -también con su hermano Phil- y Nightnoise) o Paul Mounsey. Durante más de dos décadas en las cuales nos ofreció álbumes avanzados y maravillosos como "Nahoo" o "City of walls", este músico escocés mimetizó completamente sus raíces celtas con la cultura brasileña por mor de su matrimonio con Dorinha, y largos años de estancia en la inmensa y caótica São Paulo. De regreso en Escocia (a Trotternish, en la isla de Skye), a Mounsey le llegó un encargo que volvió a llenarle de inspiración: el centro de artes An Lanntair de Stornoway (en la isla de Lewis) le propuso la creación de la música para la inauguración de su nuevo edificio, y para ello Paul contó con las voces de varias artistas de la propia isla de Lewis, la isla más grande del archipiélago de las Hébridas Exteriores. Para este y otros proyectos, el An Lanntair fundó el sello discográfico Lanntair, entre cuyos lanzamientos figura el CD de Paul Mounsey "Tha na láithean a'dol seachad" ('The days flash past'), publicado en 2005 con la música de dicha inauguración. En España, Resistencia tradujo los textos y el título en su propia edición de 2006, 'Pasan los días veloces'.
Es bien seguro que los responsables del centro de artes quedarían más que satifechos con la música presentada para el proyecto. Este aplicado compositor consigue involucrar al oyente en un divertido juego entre lo viejo y lo nuevo, un diálogo muy bien presentado (y autoproducido) que por momentos puede resultar profundo, incluso espectacular para los que gustan de melodías añejas y disfrutan con los tratamientos mas modernos. Los sonidos que envuelven a la tierna voz de Alyth McCormack en la canción de inicio ("Iomair thusa choinnich cridhe") son el ejemplo mas claro, y la convivencia de ambas vertientes consigue una pieza encantadora, en absoluto transgresora, como un delicioso juego, una canción de remeros escrita a finales del XVI por Alan Morison, de Ness, cuando cruzaba el Minch con sus hermanos y un amigo, remando ante la ausencia de viento ("hasta nuestros días, en Ness se acostumbra a aligerar la tarea de remar cantando la canción de los remeros del mar", se lee en las notas del álbum). Más profundidad reviste un segundo corte magistral, una completa canción que comienza con la voz del coautor Kevin MacNeil, recitando el título del tema y del disco ("Tha na láithean a' dol seachad", poema del escocés Iain Crichton Smith) en un soberbio envoltorio atmosférico y electrónico in crescendo, con maravilloso cambio de ritmo pianístico sorpresivo, que deriva hacia un final épico, donde una gaita nada estruendosa envuelve la pieza de clara esencia folclórica, sin abandonar el aporte neutro de la voz. No es el único poema recordado en el álbum (ni tampoco el único sobre el paso del tiempo), pues la rítmica, vigorosa, "Tim" ('El tiempo') -también con la voz de Kevin MacNeil, y tan cercana a nuevas tendencias que demuestra la increíble capacidad de Mounsey para afrontar retos de cualquier tipo, no sólo celtas- reverencia el poema de igual título de Murdo Macfarlane, otro poeta escocés que ha sido versionado por grandes bandas como Runrig o Capercaillie (y su líder Karen Matheson en solitario). Todas las voces femeninas invitadas al proyecto son originarias de la isla de Lewis, por ejemplo la deliciosa tonada de titulo "Gleann an fhraoich" -canción de amor que presenta una intensidad emocionante haciendo gala a la vez de una apabullante sencillez, retornando en cierto modo a la tradición- está cantada de manera embriagadora por Anna Murray, y es en esencia muy distinta al interesante e instructivo ejemplo de mouth music que le sigue, "M'eudail air do shuilean donna / A-nochd 's a-raoir", cantado por Chritine Primrose. Con "Thig am bata" Mounsey intenta un efecto multivocal relajante con la voz de Mary Smith, un momento placentero bien acompañado por una distendida melodía de corte sinfónico. Como buen ingeniero del sonido que es su autor, composiciones como esta son un ángulo abierto hacia nuevos caminos, hermanando ambiente y tradición. El tratamiento es algo mas étnico en "Fill-lu o ro hu o / Mor a cheannaich", pieza que presenta otro emocionante cambio de ritmo hacia las raíces, donde aflora la percusión (de aspecto brasileño) acompañando a los versos gaélicos de Ishbel Macaskill. La capacidad de Mounsey para transmitir emociones hace que consiga decir en el minuto escaso de "Beacon No1" más que muchos otros en todo un disco. De hecho, y ahondando en su variedad de registros, tanto su segunda parte, "Beacon No2" (un piano algo vanguardista) como el comienzo de "A'featheamh fad'" (con las voces de las hermanas Mackenzie, Fiona y Eilidh) parecen partituras envolventes destinadas a música de películas, profesión en la que Paul está inmerso en la actualidad como escritor de música adicional para grandes compositores de cine hollywoodiense como Danny Elfman o John Powell. El giro estilístico de la propia "A'featheamh fad'" retoma el rumbo pseudo-folclórico (escocés y brasileño) asociado a las voces invitadas a tan alegre festín casi carnavalesco. Para terminarlo, "Lewis rain" (de comienzo ambiental y final gozoso, de títulos de crédito), un cierre que aunque sea satisfactorio tal vez debería haber sido mas grandilocuente. Masterizado por Joao Vasconcelos en São Paulo, en "Tha na láithean a'dol seachad" Mounsey utiliza, además de las mencionadas voces, y de sus propias programaciones y teclados, sonidos de guitarra de Peter Maunu y bucles de batería de Abe laboriel Jr.
Muy entretenido, con la dosis de emoción que Paul sabe otorgar a sus obras, "Tha na láithean a'dol seachad" ('The days flash past') es otro gran trabajo del músico escocés, un gran álbum que lamentablemente inauguraría un silencio aún no roto en cuanto a discos firmados con su nombre. Aparte de sus semi-anónimos trabajos para cine, escasas son las huellas musicales distinguibles de Mounsey recientemente en la industria, por ejemplo la propia compañía Lanntair publicó en 2008 su tercera referencia, "Dhachaigh (Home): The Murdo Macfarlane Songbook", un CD de varios artistas basado en poemas de Murdo Macfarlane -sobre el que el An Lanntair había realizado una amplia exposición-, en el que Mounsey contribuía con dos composiciones, "Dhachaigh (Home)" y "Till (Return)". Además, "Senses" fue una canción que en 2011 se le encargó para la campaña de publicidad 'Visit Scotland'. En 2014, en CD "World jam", que recogía músicas de la serie de televisión Globe Trekker, incluía varios temas del escocés, algo que ya había sucedido en 2008 con su primera parte "Globe jam". Es una lástima que, al menos hasta la fecha, todo quede así, pues aparte de un gran compositor e intérprete, Paul Mounsey es un artista tremendamente resolutivo en el estudio de grabación, que ha dejado para la historia grandes canciones y álbumes meritorios, tanto los reputados "Nahoo" como "City of walls" o, por supuesto, este encantador 'Pasan los días veloces'.
