    Traditional music is strange. That might not seem like a particularly perceptive or even correct thing to say: after all, isn’t the very point of traditional music to be conservative, unchanging? To provide safe reference points by way of obvious genre signifiers? Traditional music is not supposed to change, you may think. That’s what makes it traditional. But it does change, and it is the manner of that change that gives it some of its strangeness. Most music progresses by way of jolts, experimental shifts in the quality of the music itself that can be felt almost viscerally by the listener – Dylan going electric, Ornette Coleman embracing the avant-garde. Cataclysms that change the very grammar of music. Traditional folk is not quite like that. Its changes are subtler – and, I think, stranger – because often they are felt in the listener, and in society before they are felt in the music itself.

    Take Matty Groves, for example. It is one of the most well-known folk songs of the British Isles, mostly because of the admittedly excellent folk-rock version by Fairport Convention. But it is not the same song as it once was: the 17th century Border ballad, the famous 1969 version and any of the many contemporary versions are all different. This difference is brought about, at least partly, by moral ambiguity. The song features three main characters (four if you count the page who spills the beans – and you should: the song turns on how he behaves), and we get to judge each of those characters by their actions. The original balladeers would have expected a certain moral reaction from their listeners. But over time, that reaction will have changed to the point where, at this present moment in history, we may not quite know what to think, morally speaking, of the events portrayed. We think differently about the place of women in society now. We think differently about class, and about cold-blooded murder, and notions of honour or valour. The song, ostensibly, remains the same, but its meaning has changed.

    Few artists today understand the subtleties of folk song – and therefore its continued relevance – quite as well as George Nigel Hoyle. Hoyle, going by the name Cunning Folk, is a chronicler of our musical heritage who always has one eye on the present. Last year’s album Ritual Land, Uncommon Ground examined the links between music, social history, ritual and landscape with a set of set of original acoustic songs that functioned together as part of a wider whole. Constant Companion, comprised of nineteen tracks (sixteen traditional, one that could be called a folk standard and two originals), is conceptually very different from its predecessor. Here Hoyle delves into his own past, creating an intensely personal collection and giving these popular old songs a chance to make new connections with the world.

    His wonderful version of Matty Groves is as good a place to begin as any. Hoyle unapologetically uses the Fairport version as a jumping-off point, but soon makes the song entirely his own. The urgency upped even further by swift-fingered, almost frantic guitar playing. Hoyle’s voice is both conversational and idiosyncratic. And of course, the song, in today’s world, takes on a new freight of potential meanings, ambiguities and inferences.

    Over ten years ago we had this one album by Nigerian heroe
    called Muddy Ibe with his Nkwa Brothers System. What a great
    artist. So happy to finally follow up on that one. His style makes
    me think of Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe a little bit, not a bad
    thing. Wonderful rhythmic break, sweet stuff not to miss..

    Het is reeds meer dan tien jaar geleden dat we één plaatje van
    de grote Muddy Ibe en zijn Nkwa brothers System hadden. Wat
    een geweldige artiest is dit. Zijn stijl doet wel denken aan die van
    Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, wat niet slecht is. Kant één heeft
    zo’n ritmische en een gitaar break, lekker. Niet te missen..

    YUKO YAMAOKA: plays the music of Satoko Fujii / Diary 2005-2015 [Libra Records, 2018]
    Η Yuko Yamaokaείναι κλασική πιανίστρια και παλαιά συνεργάτιδα τής Satoko Fujii. Ήταν μέλος π.χ. της Satoko Fujii Orchestra την εποχή της ηχογράφησης του άλμπουμ “South Wind”, που είχε τυπωθεί από τη βρετανική Leo Lab το 1997. Fujii και Yamaokaσυνεργάζονται ξανά δισκογραφικά μετά από 20+ χρόνια στον παρόν διπλό CD, που περιλαμβάνει (κρατηθείτε!) 118 συνθέσεις της Fujiiγια σόλο πιάνο. Εξήντα δύο απ’ αυτές απλώνονται στο πρώτο CD, ενώ πενήντα έξι καταγράφονται στο δεύτερο! Τι ακριβώς συμβαίνει;
    Κατ’ αρχάς, όπως μαρτυρά και ο τίτλος, εδώ έχουμε ένα… ημερολόγιο συνθέσεων, που γράφτηκαν στη δεκαετία 2005-2015. Πρόκειται για πολύ μικρής διάρκειας κομμάτια, αφού ελάχιστα απ’ αυτά (τα 118) ξεπερνούν το ένα λεπτό (δέκα εννέα για την ακρίβεια) και μόλις δύο τα δύο λεπτά (άρα τα υπόλοιπα 97 διαρκούν κάποια λίγα δευτερόλεπτα). Αυτός είναι ένας τρόπος σύνθεσης για την Fujii. Είναι μια πρακτική της, με άλλα λόγια, προκειμένου να «ζεσταθεί» (όπως το λέμε), για να πάει παρακάτω. Όπως σημειώνει και η ίδια στο booklet... κάθε φορά, που καλείται να συνθέσει, κάθεται στο πιάνο για 15 λεπτά, παίζοντας και αυτοσχεδιάζοντας. Γιατί 15; Γιατί, όπως λέει η ίδια, σ’ αυτά τα 15 λεπτά μπορεί να συγκεντρωθεί στον απόλυτο βαθμό, αναπτύσσοντας στο minimum κάποιες πρωτότυπες κάθε φορά ιδέες, οι οποίες θα χάνονταν εν συνέχιζε την εξάσκησή της για περισσότερο χρόνο.
    Φαίνεται λογικό κάτι τέτοιο. Υπάρχουν ιδέες, που μπορεί να καταγραφούν εν τη γεννέσει τους πριν μετατραπούν σε συγκεκριμένες και ολοκληρωμένες συνθέσεις. Σωστό. Αλλά πόσες τέτοιες ιδέες και για πόσην ώρα μπορεί ένας μουσικός να παράξει; Δεν κινδυνεύει από την επανάληψη; Από το να μην είναι κάθε φορά όσο πρωτότυπος απαιτείται; Οπωσδήποτε. Οπότε και το χρονικό όριο των 15 λεπτών μοιάζει λογικό, και είναι, αν κρίνουμε από το πώς ορισμένες από τις «ιδέες», που καταγράφονται εδώ, «απλώθηκαν» σε κάτι ευρύτερο (όπως διαβάζω και διαπιστώνω η “052013”, για παράδειγμα, μετεξελίχθηκε στην “Ichigo ichie”, από το CD του 2015 με την Satoko Fujii Orchestra Berlin κ.λπ.).
    Το άκουσμα των δύο CD έχει οπωσδήποτε ενδιαφέρον, καθώς προτρέπει από τη φύση του και σε μιαν άλλου τύπου ακρόαση. Κατά πόσον, θέλω να πω, μπορείς να… ταυτιστείς με κομμάτια, τα οποία διαρκούν τριάντα ή σαράντα δευτερόλεπτα. Είναι ένα θέμα αυτό, αλλά δεν είναι το κυρίαρχο εδώ.
    Στο “Yuko Yamaoka plays the music of Satoko Fujii” εκείνο που μετράει περισσότερο από κάθε τι άλλο είναι αυτή καθαυτή η διαδικασία καταγραφής ενός συνθετικού πυρήνα (ή μάλλον πολλών… 118). Και όσο αυτή η καταγραφή προχωράει τόσο πιο πολύ ανακαλύπτεις κι εσύ πώς σκέφτεται ένας συνθέτης-αυτοσχεδιαστής (η Fujiiεν προκειμένω) όχι μόνον όταν ηχογραφεί στο στούντιο, αλλά και όταν καλείται να ανεβεί στη σκηνή και να αυτοσχεδιάσει.
    Ορισμένοι αδαείς (υπάρχουν και τέτοιοι… δεν είναι αμαρτία) νομίζουν πως «ελεύθερος αυτοσχεδιασμός» σημαίνει… ανεβαίνω στο πάλκο και παίζω-κάνω ό,τι γουστάρω, χωρίς να υπακούω πουθενά και σε τίποτα. Όπως δεν υπάρχει στην καθημερινότητα απόλυτη ελευθερία, έτσι δεν υπάρχει και στη μουσική. Το διπλό αυτό CDμας δείχνει με ποιον τρόπο το κεντρικό στοιχείο της μουσικής δημιουργίας (το άτμητο… ας το πούμε έτσι) όχι απλώς υπάρχει, υφίσταται, αλλά και υπόκειται (και αυτό) σε κάποιους νομοτελειακούς κανόνες. Στη βάση τους, δηλαδή, τα πάντα είναι αριθμοί. (Και γι’ αυτό, προφανώς, και τα 118 tracks αυτού του διπλού CD ονοματίζονται μόνο με νούμερα).

    AMU: Weave [Libra Records, 2018]
    Το Amu είναι ένα ασυνήθιστο κουαρτέτο, καθώς αποτελείται από την Satoko Fujii πιάνο, τον Natsuki Tamura τρομπέτα, κρουστά, τον Takashi Itani κρουστά και την percussive dancer Mizuki Wildenhahn. Χορεύτριες (και χορευτές), που να έχουν συμπράξει με jazz σχήματα έχουν υπάρξει και στο παρελθόν φυσικά (προχείρως θυμάμαι τις περιπτώσεις των Steve Lacy και Peter Kowald, ενώ και στην Ελλάδα ο Φλώρος Φλωρίδης έχει πράξει κάτι ανάλογο – πιθανώς και άλλοι). Όταν λέμε “percussive dnacer” πρέπει να εξηγήσουμε τι σημαίνει. Η Wildenhahnχορεύει πάνω σε ειδικό δάπεδο και ό,τι ακούγεται απ’ αυτήν προέρχεται από τα χτυπήματα ή το σύρσιμο των ποδιών της καθώς και από κάποιες κινήσεις των χεριών της, όταν κινεί τα ρούχα της π.χ. – δεν κρατάει, δηλαδή, κρουστά, ούτε έχει κρουστά «καρφιτσωμένα» πάνω της. Αυτό το λέω, επειδή είδα το DVD, που εμπεριέχεται στο πακέτο, βιντεοσκοπημένο στην Kanagawaτης Ιαπωνίας, την 1η Ιουλίου 2018. Από ’κει είναι παρμένη και ηχογράφηση φυσικά, γιατί το “Weave” εμπεριέχει και κανονικό audio-CD, στο οποίο καταγράφεται κι ένα παραπάνω κομμάτι (από το DVD), δίχως τη συμμετοχή της Wildenhahn.
    Βεβαίως, βλέποντας κάποιος την παράσταση έχει διαφορετική «εικόνα» γι’ αυτήν (από εκείνη την σκέτη ακουστική, που παρέχει το CD). Αυτό συμβαίνει, γιατί το μάτι παρασύρεται από την χορεύτρια εστιάζοντας πάνω της, αφήνοντας τον ήχο να λειτουργήσει κάπως σαν background – όπως σε δεύτερο πλάνο μπαίνει και η υπόλοιπη κινητικότητα (των τριών μουσικών εννοώ), που είναι και αυτή έντονη και που «χάνεται» (εννοείται) από το CD. Τέλος πάντων, χρήσιμα είναι και τα δύο δισκάκια, αλλά ας εστιάσουμε περισσότερο στον ήχο…
    Το άλμπουμ περιλαμβάνει επτά tracks, που αποτελούν συνθέσεις όλων (και της Wildenhahn), με το πρώτο, το “Megosona”, να διαρκεί σχεδόν 18 λεπτά (όντας το μεγαλύτερο σε διάρκεια).
    Εντάξει, όσοι έχουν κάποιαν ιδέα των εγγραφών τής Fujii αντιλαμβάνονται πως ο αυτοσχεδιασμός παίζει, και εδώ, πολύ μεγάλο ρόλο. Ο Tamura, που θα βρίσκεται πάντα ένα βήμα μπροστά με τα απίστευτα φυσήματά του, το «άηχο» παίξιμο με τις βαλβίδες, γενικώς το percussive playing(είτε στην τρομπέτα, είτε με κανονικά κρουστά), τις πολυφωνικές τεχνικές, είναι βασικός παράγοντας τής ηχητικής πρωτοτυπίας, που φθάνει στ’ αυτιά μας. Από κοντά και ο περκασιονίστας Itani, που εξαντλεί και αυτός την εφευρετικότητά του, με την Fujii στο γνωστό… προβοκατόρικο και διαβρωτικό ρόλο της, με συνεχείς εναλλαγές δυναμικών και ηπίων μερών, αλλά και εναλλαγές στυλ, εκκωφαντικά clustersκαι κυρίως με μιαν εντελώς δική της αντίληψη του χρόνου (έτσι όπως κρυσταλλώνεται αυτή άλλοτε μέσω των σύντομων επαναληπτικών μοτίβων και άλλοτε μέσω της αστραπιαίας εναλλαγής συγχορδιών).
    Κομμάτια σαν το “Gorondari” δεν είναι απλώς μπροστά από την εποχή τους, είναι εκτός πάσης εποχής γενικώς.

    I’ll admit to just a twinge of disappointment when I heard that Fairport Convention would celebrate its 45th anniversary this year with the release of re-recorded versions of 13 fan-selected songs. It’s not that the songs on “By Popular Request” aren’t all flawless classics — legendary songwriters including Fairport alumni Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick wrote them. The problem, to me anyway, was that I already have the classic songs locked into my permanent memory bank. I was craving something new.

    How fortunate for me — and, of course, countless other fans of folk rock in general and Fairport Convention in particular –that Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg, Chris Leslie, Ric Sanders and Gerry Conway gave us just that on “By Popular Request.” The songs are all the standards that fans of classic Fairport love — including “Meet on the Ledge,” “Walk Awhile,” “Farewell Farewell” and “Matty Groves” — but they’ve got just enough new instrumental flavoring to make them fresh.

    Consider the classic English folk tune “Matty Groves” which, candidly, I’d felt I’d heard enough times to last well into another life time. And perhaps one beyond that. The tweaks made for this version – specifically the addition of banjo by brilliant multi-instrumentalist Leslie – adds just enough pluck (sorry — I couldn’t resist) to give it new sparkle.

    “Farewell Farewell” is another classic that received a modest but arguably long overdue overhaul in the form of lovely harmonies and added instrumentation. I can only imagine the challenge in recreating a song from the much-revered “Liege & Lief” album – not to mention one that the incomparable Denny sang. As fans know, many traditionalist cry foul whenever a song Denny popularized is rerecorded, especially without a female vocalist. Yet, Fairport’s latest version is as starkly poignant as the original.

    That’s not to say there aren’t songs I wish had received a bit more flavoring. “Hiring Fair” comes immediately to mind. But, really, that’s a minor quibble that may stem from my over familiarity with the song that has been on my husband’s heavy rotation playlist for years.

    “By Popular Request” is truly a magical album that reimagines Fairport’s best songs as only the virtuoso musicians in its current line up could do.

    Mickey Baker was one of the most versatile and technically proficient players of the 1950s New York studio scene where he made his initial impact. He is best known though for his pop/R&B outings as one half of the duo, Mickey & Sylvia whose recordings can be found on the Jasmine collection “Love Is Strange” (JASMCD3093). Here Jasmine focuses on a selection of Mickey’s solo recordings along with a handful of his prominent session work all recorded between 1952 and 1959. These selections truly display the breadth of Baker’s talent as he plays several different styles with equal brilliance. When listening to this collection of his outstanding guitar playing there is no question of Mickey Baker’s importance in the development of rock and roll and in particular rock and roll guitar. Throughout this time he also continued to teach guitar and wrote the first of several tuition books which became best sellers and have remained in print for over 50 years.

    For years, Walter Salas-Humara has split his time between making music and visual art, so it’s not surprising that Walterio, his August 10, 2018 release on Rhyme & Reason Records, contains rich imagery — both lyrically and on its cover. But one of the strongest images it evokes actually comes from the music itself, which might be described as the sonic equivalent of a tree — a rock ’n’ roll family tree. Salas-Humara was made in Cuba, too, but born in America. (The album’s title is his Hispanic nickname.) He spent a good chunk of his Florida childhood studying drums, which, of course, led to teenage rock ’n’ roll bands.

    Tracks such as “Here We Go,” “She’s a Caveman” and “Out of the Band” can trace lineage back to the Silos, the still-kicking band Salas-Humara co-founded in New York’s post-punk ’80s scene. Playing alt-country before anyone called it that, they were named Best New Artist in the 1987 Rolling Stone Critics Poll— which temporarily deep-sixed Salas-Humara’s art-career plans.
