Mark Lanegan – I’ll Take Care of You (1999/2015)

I’ll Take Care of You is the fourth solo album by former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan. This album consists of cover songs. It features Lanegan’s interpretation of songs from a wide variety of songwriters, including Tim Rose, Tim Hardin, Booker T. Jones, and Buck Owens. I’ll Take Care Of You also includes the traditional song “Little Sadie.” A review from NME said: “it’s probably his finest, most tenderly-delivered work to date.” Pitchfork Medias Neil Lieberman said this about the album: “in this collection, Lanegan’s managed to tug on the timeless threads that hold the patchwork of American music together. And that’s certainly something to consider.” The title song was featured in an episode of Veronica Mars’s third season entitled “There’s Got To Be A Morning After Pill”.

Δεν ξέρω γιατί, αλλά ακούγοντας τον όρο «ευρωπαϊκή τζαζ» το μυαλό μου πάει κατ’ ευθείαν σε 2-3 μουσικούς (ίσως και σε μερικούς ακόμη). Ο Πολωνός Krzysztof Komeda είναι o ένας, ο Βαγκίφ Μουσταφά-Ζαντέείναι ένας δεύτερος... Δεν είμαι απολύτως βέβαιος γιατί συμβαίνει αυτό.

Πιθανώς –αν αναφερόμαστε στους συγκεκριμένους καλλιτέχνες– να παρακινούμαι από το γεγονός πως ηχογραφούσαν στις «άλλες» χώρες, στα σίξτις και τα σέβεντις (και εννοώ όχι στη Δυτική Ευρώπη). Επίσης από το γεγονός πως πέθαναν νέοι (ο Komeda στα 38 του, το 1969, ο Μουσταφά-Ζαντέ, στα 39 του, δέκα χρόνια αργότερα) και πως άφησαν ένα προσωπικό όσο και πρωτότυπο έργο, το οποίο θ’ ανακαλύπτεται και θα επευφημείται διαρκώς.
Στην περίπτωση του Μουσταφά-Ζαντέ λειτουργεί και κάτι άλλο. Παρότι η κόρη του, η Αζίζα Μουσταφά-Ζαντέ, μετέφερε με τη δική της πληθωρική παρουσία τη μνήμη του στα πιο σύγχρονα χρόνια, οι ηχογραφήσεις του ίδιου, που δεν ήταν και τόσο πολλές ενόσω ζούσε, ήταν για χρόνια κρυμμένες. Ήταν δύσκολο να εντοπιστούν εννοώ.
Εντάξει, τώρα μπορεί όλα να «κατεβαίνουν» και ν’ ακούγονται στο YouTube, αλλά για εμάς, που ήμασταν μεγάλοι και πριν το 2000, και που προσπαθούσαμε από ’κείνα τα χρόνια να εντοπίσουμε δίσκους του αζέρου πιανίστα, κάθε ανακάλυψη άλμπουμ του γιορταζόταν σαν «γεγονός». Και γι’ αυτό, ίσως, να έχει μείνει περισσότερο στη μνήμη μου η φάση όταν πρωτάκουσα το δικό του “Jazz Compositions” (1974), παρά όταν άκουσα, φερ’ ειπείν, το “Afric Pepperbird” του Jan Garbarek.

Aural Archipelago on the Road to Europalia
For the roughly three years I’ve been running Aural Archipelago, my method of sharing Indonesian music with the world has been fairly simple: research, record, film, post. While the website and the popular Facebook page has been a great way to expose this music to new audiences, I’ve always felt that there were even more interesting avenues to explore. How else could I act as an ambassador for this music that I love?
An amazing opportunity has come in the form of the Europalia International Arts Festival. Europalia is a massive Brussels-based event spanning four months, many countries, and hundreds of artists. With the festival centered entirely around the theme of Indonesia, this country has an unprecedented opportunity to share its rich culture and heritage with a vast new audience.

Aural Archipelago is involved on two fronts: in early December, a series of curated Aural Archipelago events will go down across Belgium with a handful of my favorite musicians from Indonesia. Music from Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and Sumba will be played on stages across the land of waffles and frites, some of it never before played outside of Indonesia. It’s a truly exciting concert series, but I’ll rave more about it soon enough.
For now, the other front, which has been in the works for quite a while. To deepen the cultural exchange at the heart of this festival, Europalia sent musicians from all over Europe to immerse themselves in Indonesian musical cultures through field recording expeditions and direct collaborations. Using my relationships with musicians and knowledge of the musical landscape as a jumping off point, I had the privilege to act as an ambassador for these visiting artists, helping them get in touch with some of the amazing musical worlds Indonesia has to offer.

Starting this week, I’ll be sharing the results of these unorthodox residencies just as I would with a typical Aural Archipelago post, complete with recordings, video, and some peeks behind the scenes. First, we’ll be following German DJ and electronic musician Jan Schulte (aka Wolf Müller) as he treks through Indonesian Borneo in search of mouth harps and jungle sounds, trading exotic visions of headhunter-filled jungles for a journey which aims towards the real Kalimantan.
Next we’ll join Berlin-based Lebanese producer Rabih Beaini (aka Morphosis) as he teams up with Bandungites Tarawangselas (Teguh Permana and Wisnu Ridwana) to reimagine the sacred, looping sounds of Sundanese tarawangsa music.
Later, we’ll follow Belgian musician and producer Dijf Sanders as he treks through West and Central Java, exploring Sundanese and Javanese soundworlds through a microphone. That journey will take us from the bamboo instrument shops of Bandung to the gurgling frog-filled rice paddies of Banyumas, all fueled by Dijf’s curious approach to sound and music.

Finally, we’ll join the ambitious Moondog for Gamelan project of Bandung-based composer Iwan Gunawan and Moondog acolyte Stefan Lakatos. In this unprecedented collaboration, the percussive compositions of famed minimalist outsider Moondog will be interpreted through Iwan Gunawan’s bespoke bamboo gamelan.
While the musical meetings of these residencies were exciting enough, there’s more: in addition to new albums from Wolf Muller, Dijf Sanders, and Tarawangsawelas, these Indonesian explorations will culminate in a series of international performances across the Europalia lineup. With each post I’ll share the details on how to see the musical results for yourself in cities across Europe.

Shilpa Ray – Door Girl (2017)

Shilpa Ray has recently announced a new album Door Girl, that will be released on September 22nd through Northern Spy Records. This follows the artist’s 2015 album Last Year’s Savage.
According to the press release, this record will tribute her time working at Lower East Side/ New York City bar Pianos. The album is described as “Girls are Free. Girls are free to bear witness. Girls are freed.” The album talks about Girls being free, free to make mistakes, free to come and go and free of all the perceptions that are linked to what it is described to be a girl. As for the album cover, the picture shows pink neon, to show the reminiscent of the pink lipstick of New York Dolls, and fast moving people that have ideas of a normal life speeding or a smear of obscurity.
As for the voice of the artist, it is said that it is “neither prisoners nor guff as it offers up continuous caustic commentary on the human condition. ” The album shapes a picture of nightlife with reverberation and feedback. Each instrument is presented clearly to shape the story portrayed by the album. This story would be about ‘ a city as it lives and breathes at its most basic levels, as told by an artist who is equal parts musician and magician and for whom each song is a different life she has lived and breathed and experienced like few others have.”

Wand – Plum (2017)

The LP is Wand’s first since 2015’s 1000 Days, but their fourth since 2013. Now that the group have expanded to a quintet – late last year they welcomed Robbie Cody (guitar) and Sofia Arreguin (keys, vocals) into their ranks – they’ve adopted new writing and recording methods, drawing more from full-band improv sessions and building on collective ideas.
“Plum” is a wonderfully wiry taste of this new approach – chugging piano jabs and haywire riffs swirl into a typhoon of slick psychedlic pop, thickening and contorting with every passing second. As the final moments approach, Wand have summoned walls of knotted noise with vocal lines battling for the spotlight and melodies relentlessly burrowing into your mind.
“The song transpires between our collective harmony and individual dissent,” explains vocalist/guitarist Cory Hanson. “It felt like we were each trying to obstruct a clear path in order to discover new space. As a total accident, ‘Plum’ wound up being a miniature blueprint to the musical language we developed together over months of dedicated writing.”

GHÉDALIA TAZARTÈS + MAYA DUNIETZ ένα ελληνικό LP τους
Ο Ghédalia Tazartès (γεννημένος στο Παρίσι το 1947 – 70άρης πια) είναι μια πολύ ιδιαίτερη περίπτωση της γαλλικής πειραματικής σκηνής. Αν και βοκαλίστας βασικά, πολύ συχνά θα τον δεις να χειρίζεται και ηλεκτρονικά, να παίζει κρουστά κ.λπ. είτε σε φάση σόλο, είτε συνεργαζόμενος με άλλους συναδέλφους του της πειραματικής πάντα σχολής (Jac Berrocal, Frédéric Rebotier κ.ά.). Το τραγούδισμά του δεν έχει… αρχή και τέλος και μπορεί σ’ αυτό να διακρίνεις ποικίλα χαρακτηριστικά και γνωρίσματα, δανεισμένα είτε από τις μουσικές του κόσμου, με στόχευση πάντα στο αρχαϊκό πνεύμα και την πρωτο-ομιλία, είτε σε πιο «έντεχνες» φόρμες, που μπορεί να αφορούν από το αβάντ τραγούδι μέχρι και το ροκ ή το πανκ. Όλα αυτά σε συνδυασμούς με ηλεκτρονικά, musique concrète, κολάζ (παλαιότερα ή και σήμερα) κ.λπ. Το πιο πρόσφατο άλμπουμ τού Ghédalia Tazartès είναι ελληνικό, έχει τίτλο “Schulevy Maker”, συνυπογράφεται από την επίσης πειραματίστρια Maya Dunietzκαι είναι τυπωμένο από τις Holotype-Editions. Να πούμε, ακόμη, πως ό,τι ακούμε εδώ είναι ζωντανά ηχογραφημένο στο Café Oto του Λονδίνου, τον Δεκέμβριο του 2013.

Είναι δύσκολο να περιγράψεις αυτό που φτάνει στ’ αυτιά σου στο “Schulevy Maker” – ένα λογοπαίγνιο, ας το πούμε έτσι, βγαλμένο μέσα από την ονομασία του κομήτη Shoemaker-Levy 9, κομμάτια του οποίου είχαν συγκρουστεί με τον πλανήτη Δία, το 1994. Και τούτο, γιατί δεν υπάρχει κάποιο συγκεκριμένο ηχητικό ή άλλο concept, που να διατρέχει την εγγραφή. Εκτός και αν θεωρήσουμε ως… concept αυτή και μόνον αυτή την παρουσία των Tazartès και Dunietz. Γιατί όχι; Τουλάχιστον, για την περίπτωση του Tazartès κάλλιστα θα μπορούσε να ισχύει. Ο άνθρωπος αυτός είναι ένα «θέμα» από μόνος του.
Δύο κομμάτια διαθέτει το LP, τα οποία είναι βασικά ένα (διάρκεια ακροάματος 46 λεπτά). Πυκνός χρόνος οπωσδήποτε, γιατί αυτά που ακούς εδώ είναι κατά βάση άχρονα. Είναι αέναα. Δεν έχουν αρχή και τέλος. Ούτε μέση. Είναι ένα ηχητικό ποτάμι, που δεν ξέρεις ούτε από πού πηγάζει, ούτε πού θα καταλήξει. Τραγουδούν-βοκαλίζουν και οι δύο εν τω μεταξύ – όπως και οι δύο, Tazartèsκαι Dunietz, χειρίζονται ηλεκτρονικά, κρουστά, πιάνο ή ό,τι άλλο. Υπάρχει μια ροή λοιπόν, που διατηρεί οπωσδήποτε στοιχεία αυτοσχεδιασμού, τοποθετημένα πάνω σε μιαν υποτυπώδη βάση.
Αν θεωρήσουμε πως ο κομήτης Shoemaker-Levy9 είναι ένα άλλο «θέμα», τότε αυτό που ακούμε στο “Schulevy Maker” πιθανώς να έχει να κάνει με μιαν απόπειρα καταγραφής του εξώκοσμου, με όρους… προϊστορίας. Η αρχαιοπρέπεια, θέλω να πω, είναι προφανής στο άκουσμα του LP – μιαν αρχαιοπρέπεια που προσεγγίζεται όχι μόνο μέσω της φωνής, αλλά και του υπόλοιπου ηχητικού οικοδομήματος, που μπορεί να είναι ταυτοχρόνως όσο φουτουριστικό χρειάζεται, ώστε να κλείνει ο κύκλος.
Ο κύκλος της ύπαρξης εννοώ.
