The Congolese band Konono No. 1 has announced the death of their frontman, Augustin Mawangu Mingiedi, due to complications from diabetes. The 56-year-old had taken over lead likembe duties for his father, Mingiedi Mawangu, who founded and led the band until his passing in 2015.

On their Facebook page, the group announced that Augustin had been sick for several months and that they are “devastated” by the loss. However, the band will continue, saying:

“But Konono N°1 are indestructible, and we’ve been continuing to work and perform. After Mingiedi and Augustin, the torch of lead likembe player has now been passed to the third generation, to Augustin’s son Makonda, who is fronting the band with original singer Menga Waku.”

Afropop has always been a big fan of Konono No. 1, meeting the group over a decade ago when they came to New York to and played three sold-out shows. The group’s “tradi-modern” style of electrified likembes—a type of thumb piano—felt gritty and adventurous but also unique to their Kinshasa origins. Thanks to its compulsively catchy DIY sounds, the band caught on in America with indie musicians and jazz legends alike, working with everyone from Bjork to Herbie Hancock.

Both bandleaders were featured in our story of how Konono No. 1’s big international break, Congotronics, came about.

Fittingly, the elder Mingiedi described the band’s connection to funeral rites and how their music approaches death itself.

“When the group plays at a funeral they try to console the departed by singing songs about love,” he said. “They want to take sorrow from the person’s heart as he or she enters the world of the ancestors. All of these ‘tradi-modern groups’ are necessarily connected to death, because they are the link with the dead, especially in cities where…people lose track with their roots. They’re community groups.”

The community will live on; thanks to Augustin Mawangu Mingiedi who brought a noisy, joyful sound into our lives.

Peter Tosh, one of the three original Wailers, would have celebrated his 73rd Earth Day on Oct. 19. In commemoration, BOTB pays homage to the restless, outspoken, impenetrable Mystic Man with an in-depth interview by The Beat’s founding editor, Roger Steffens, entitled “Rebel With A Cause” published in 1986, the year preceding Tosh’s violent murder in 1987. Their conversation includes often-incomprehensible tales of Tosh’s turbulent life and career, his devotion to sinsemilla, the severe beatings at the hands of the police, visions of duppies (ghosts) and other spiritual encounters, and his inspirations for his many songs.

Attended by members of the royal family, Status Quo’s show for the Princes Trust at the NEC was one of the bands most famous and talked about gigs in their history. Recorded on May 14th 1982, the show existed in two recorded parts, one a album released on Universal and the other broadcast on the BBC. This release combines the two shows in a 3-LP and 2-CD format for the first time. The show captures the show in full flight with a set list combining the best of their hits along with tracks from their various albums – one of the highlights being a 23 minute version of 4500 Hundred times.

Willie Nelson and the Boys is a collaboration album by Willie Nelson and his sons Lukas and Micah. The release is the second volume of the series Willie’s Stash, a collection of archival releases selected by Nelson. The material contained on the album was recorded during the sessions for the 2012 album Heroes.[1]

The tracks consist of country standards, featuring seven songs penned by Hank Williams. It was recorded by engineer Steve Chadie at Nelson’s Pedernales studio.

Widely considered to be both The Smiths’ finest work and one of the greatest albums ever made, ‘The Queen Is Dead’ has cast a significant influence over subsequent generations since it was first released in the summer of 1986. Now Warner Bros. Records can confirm details of a newly mastered and expanded version of the album that will be released on 20th October.

CD 1 -features the 2017 master of the album

CD 2 – features additional recordings; demos, b-sides and alternative versions. Tracks 1-7 and 9 are previously unreleased. Track 8 was released on 7” for Record Store Day. Tracks 10 and 11 are 2017 masters of b-sides from ‘The Boy With The Thorn In His Side’. Tracks 12 and 13 are 2017 masters of b-sides from ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’
