James Leg – Blood On The Keys (2016)

One third of the eternally awesome Black Diamond Heavies and akin to personal favorite the Immortal Lee County Killers, John Wesley Myers aka James Leg returns with his 3rd solo effort on the great, Alive Naturalsound Records, Blood On The Keys. If you’ve ever heard a James Leg record or better yet have never seen the man perform live, blood is the last thing to leave on the keys of that Rhodes piano, everything else has been poured out by record and/or shows end. Not a terribly big man in stature but fire up the PA and set him on a keyboard stool and you’re best to find the nearest bomb shelter. Stacked high with voracious punk blues with his piano at center stage, Leg stands 90ft tall and rising.
Recorded yet again at whats become homebase recording-wise, the Masonic Lodge in Dayton, KY with engineer/producer deluxe Jason Soda at the helm, Blood On the Keys picks up where Leg’s last effort, Below The Belt left off. Chunky, rowdy, classy come clanky piano progressions with Leg’s satanic howl bouncing around the mix like Howlin’ Wolf’s third white cousin. The tracks are fleshed out with plenty meat on the bone for this effort, fiddle fills and strings, guitars aforementioned, and copious if not deadly doses of gravel punk rock. Polarized by soul numbers like “I’ll Take It” and jumpy blues the likes of record closer, “Should’ve Been Home With You”.
Leg sounds like no one, and writes like no one. That’s his beauty. If you’re looking for a soundalike pack it in and head home, you’re clearly barking aside the wrong tree. If you’re a fan of gunnite gypsy punk with a rocksteady back beat, James Leg is your eternal ediface. There is nothing like a Leg record and there never will be, no one plays like him, no one growls like him, and certainly no one rocks like him. He’s a world travelled stalwart and will be forever a gem in the Blues crown. Enough waxing poetic, here’s the premier of “Hugging The Line” in all its clanky glory. Though this is the trio’s debut album, the members of Gal Friday are hardly new to the industry. Raised in rural North Carolina, they’ve already impacted the industry with their flawless sibling harmonies and rooted rock-meets-southern gospel sound. Though they initially started out as solo acts, it was only a matter of time before friends and family members encouraged the gals to become a trio – and Gal Friday was born. Boy are we glad it was! BARRY ALTSCHUL & THE 3DOM FACTOR το καλύτερο τζαζ άλμπουμ που άκουσα, έως τώρα, μέσα στο 2017
Δεν χρειάζεται να πούμε πολλά για το ποιος είναι ο ντράμερ Barry Altschul. Όσοι ασχολούνται έστω και στοιχειωδώς με την προχωρημένη τζαζ σίγουρα θα γνωρίζουν τον Altschul από την παρουσία του δίπλα στον Paul Bley στα sixties, βεβαίως από τη συμμετοχή του στους Circle (Chick Corea, DaveHolland, AnthonyBraxton) και οπωσδήποτε από τη συνεισφορά του σε προσωπικά άλμπουμ των Corea, Braxton, Sam Rivers, Dave Liebman και τόσων άλλων στα seventies και πέραν αυτών. Φυσικά έχει και προσωπική δισκογραφία ο Altschul – κι ένα τέτοιο προσωπικό ας το πούμε έτσι άλμπουμ του είναι και το “Live in Kraków”[Not Two, 2017], που συνυπογράφεται από τους 3Dom Factor(ένα από τα τελευταία trioτου, που το συναποτελούν ο μπασίστας Joe Fonda και ο σαξοφωνίστας Jon Irabagon ex-Mostly Other People Do the Killing).

Ζωντανά λοιπόν ηχογραφημένοι στο Alchemia Club της Κρακοβίας, της διαχρονικής πρωτεύουσας της jazzστην Πολωνία, την 4η Δεκεμβρίου 2016, οι Altschul, Fondaκαι Irabagonπαρουσιάζουν ένα ελεύθερο σετ, αποτελούμενο από πέντε κομμάτια τού Altschul και μια διασκευή στο “Ask me now” του Thelonious Monk.
Το “Live in Kraków” ανοίγει με το 12λεπτο “Martin’s stew”, που ξεκινά μ’ ένα μακροσκελές σόλο του Altschul(ξεπερνά τα τρία λεπτά), πριν εισβάλουν τα δύο υπόλοιπα όργανα και κολλήσουν τη σύνθεση στο κόκκινο (απίστευτος ο Irabagon… δεν τον προλαβαίνεις ούτε όταν τον ακούς στο σπίτι σου απ’ το CD). Ακολουθεί το “Ask me now”, εκεί όπου η πασίγνωστη μελωδία του Monk, έρχεται και φεύγει, διαλυμένη ή ακεραία, μέσω μιας συνεχούς ελεύθερης προσέγγισης. Τη σκυτάλη παίρνει το 10λεπτο “For Papa Joe , Klook and Philly too”, που είναι αφιερωμένο στους ιστορικούς τζαζ ντράμερ Papa Jo Jones, Kenny Clarke και Philly Joe Jones, που επηρέασαν τον Barry Altschul στην καλλιτεχνική πορεία του. Το κομμάτι διακρίνεται για τη μεγάλη έντασή του, το δυναμικό παίξιμο και των τριών δηλαδή, που, σε μια εκπληκτική performance, βάζουν φωτιά στα τόπια. Δύσκολα ακούγονται ακόμη και ροκ-τρίο τόσο δυνατά, όσο εδώ οι Altschul, Fondaκαι Irabagon. Είτε σε ομαδικό παίξιμο, είτε ανά δύο, είτε σε πολύ σύντομα σόλο (ο Altschul βασικά) είναι και οι τρεις τους απίθανοι. Προτελευταίο κομμάτι του άλμπουμ είναι το 9λεπτο “Irina”, που είναι blues βασικά και συγχρόνως το μόνο slowκομμάτι του CD… αλλά τι slow! Φοβερός οIrabagon στοσοπρανίνο και… from another planet το rhythm section.
Το “Live in Kraków” θα κλείσει με το 14λεπτο “The3Dom Factor”, έναν τζαζ ολετήρα που σπέρνει διαρκή ηχητικό πανικό. Απίστευτα timbre από τον Irabagon, συν κρουστά και μπάσο που σμπαραλιάζουν μέτρα και κανόνες.
Εκπληκτικό άλμπουμ, με βαριές υπογραφές πολύ μεγάλων μουσικών!

The greatest white female rock singer of the 1960s, Janis Joplin was also a great blues singer, making her material her own with her wailing, raspy, supercharged emotional delivery. First rising to stardom as the frontwoman for San Francisco psychedelic band Big Brother & the Holding Company, she left the group in the late ’60s for a brief and uneven (though commercially successful) career as a solo artist. Although she wasn’t always supplied with the best material or most sympathetic musicians, her best recordings, with both Big Brother and on her own, are some of the most exciting performances of her era. She also did much to redefine the role of women in rock with her assertive, sexually forthright persona and raunchy, electrifying on-stage presence.
