It is now almost 40 years to the day since the Sex Pistols‘ Never Mind The Bollocks was released and to mark this significant anniversary USM/UMC are proud to revisit the out-of-print super deluxe edition of the album, which was originally issued in 2012. Released in limited numbers at the time, this set is widely considered to be the definitive version. Unlike its 12” by 12” predecessor this new, smaller-sized edition still boasts 3CDs which include the original studio album with 1977 B-sides, a disc of outtakes and one disc of live material. Condensing the very essence of the punk era, Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols is the only studio album by the group, released amidst a furore of controversy and outrage, following their being dropped by not one but two record labels, banned from gigging in most parts of the UK and swearing live on TV. From its iconic day-glo cover by Jamie Reid to its risqué title, the album encapsulates a moment in time when punk set the world of pop music on fire.

PENNY DREADFUL Έλληνες της americana
Σχετικά καινούριο ελληνικό συγκρότημα είναι οι Penny Dreadful, αφού σχηματίστηκαν το 2010, έχοντας ηχογραφήσει έως σήμερα δύο άλμπουμ – το “Deadwood” το 2013 και το παρόν “Pilgrimage” [Lenin’s Modem, 2017] εφέτος (πριν κανα μήνα). Το συγκρότημα κινείται στο χώρο της americana (ή του country-rock όπως το λέγαμε παλαιότερα) κι έχει ως βασικό μέλος του τον Γιάννη Καλιφατίδη που τραγουδά, παίζει κιθάρα και μπάντζο – γνωστός σε όσους από την παρουσία του, πριν δεκαετίες, στους… ψυχεδελο-γκοθάδες Into the Abyss. Άλλα μέλη των Penny Dreadful είναι οι Νίκος Παναγιώτου ντραμς, κρουστά, Πάνος Μπόμπολας μπάσο και Διονύσης Τελιόπουλος ηλεκτρική και resonator κιθάρες. Δίπλα σ’ αυτούς τους τέσσερις παρατάσσονται και κάποιοι guests σε φωνή και φωνητικά (Φλώρα Ιωαννίδη, Ελίνα Ραγκούση…), fender rhodes(Κωστής Ζουλιάτης), pedal steel(John Hardy) και σαξόφωνα (Δημήτρης Παντελιάς). Όλες οι συνθέσεις ανήκουν στα μέλη του γκρουπ (ομαδική δουλειά), ενώ τα λόγια είναι του Γιάννη Καλιφατίδη.

Ξεκινώντας απ’ αυτά τα τελευταία, τα λόγια, θα έλεγα πως ανταποκρίνονται στις επιταγές, αν θεωρήσουμε πως υπάρχουν τέτοιες, της americana. Διακρίνονται ανάμεσα σε άλλα για τα… φυσιολατρικά χαρακτηριστικά τους, που αποτελούν συχνά το περιβάλλον προκειμένου να εξελιχθούν οι διάφορες ιστορίες – ιστορίες αγάπης, ιστορίες με «ξένους» και παρίες, ιστορίες σχετικές με τη θρησκευτική πίστη ή την έλλειψη και την αναζήτησή της καλύτερα κ.λπ.
Από ’κει και πέρα υπάρχουν οι μουσικές, οι ερμηνείες, η παραγωγή... Οι πρώτες είναι πολύ καλές, που δείχνουν έμπνευση και δύναμη, και κομμάτια όπως τα “Death blow”, “Love walks on a wire” και “Graveyard Muley” θα μπορούσε να διαπρέπουν οπουδήποτε στην Ελλάδα ή την Αμερική. Εκεί όπου υπάρχει ζήτημα είναι στην πρώτη αντρική φωνή και στην παραγωγή. Ο Καλιφατίδης μου ακούγεται κάπως «λίγος», χωρίς ιδιαίτερο βάθος, όγκο και χρώματα η φωνή του δυσκολεύεται να ανταποκριθεί στις υποχρεώσεις της. Ίσως αυτό να είναι και τεχνικό θέμα, παραγωγής κ.λπ.... δεν ξέρω. Βεβαίως υπάρχουν οι δεύτερες φωνές που σηκώνουν αρκετό από το απαιτούμενο βάρος, γεμίζοντας το «κάδρο» (άκου πώς αλλάζει προς το… ανωτερότερο το “Desert shore” π.χ., όταν μπαίνει η γυναικεία φωνή). Γενικώς, ο Καλιφατίδης χειρίζεται με γνώση τις άλλες γυναικείες φωνές (πρώτες και δεύτερες) και αυτό καλύπτει κάπως το θέμα, που σε κάθε περίπτωση χρήζει περισσότερης προσοχής. Επίσης η παραγωγή θα ήθελε κάτι ακόμη – αν και τώρα εδώ μπαίνουν και θέματα «προσωπικής άποψης». Εγώ πάντως την ακούω κάπως «ξερή» και χωρίς ιδιαίτερα vibes.
Τι θέλω να πω… Στο “Pilgrimage” υπάρχουν μερικά καταπληκτικά τραγούδια (κομμάτια σαν το “Comes a time” δεν γράφονται εύκολα από ελληνικά συγκροτήματα), που δείχνουν το αυτονόητο, πως οι Penny Dreadfulείναι ένα έτοιμο γκρουπ, που με κάποιες βελτιώσεις (οι οποίες μπορεί να γίνουν εύκολα) θα πατήσει σίγουρα κορυφή. Lee Hazlewood – Cowboy In Sweden (1970, Remastered 2017)

At the turn of the ’60s, Lee Hazlewood decided to leave America for Sweden. He had already spent time in the country, appearing as an actor in two television productions, so his decision wasn’t completely out of the blue — especially since he had become close with the Swedish artist/filmmaker Torbjörn Axelman. The year that he arrived in Sweden, he starred in Axelman’s television production Cowboy in Sweden and cut an album of the same name. Judging by the album alone, the film must have been exceedingly surreal, since the record exists in its own space and time. At its core, it’s a collection of country and cowboy tunes, much like the work he did with Nancy Sinatra, but the production is cinematic and psychedelic, creating a druggy, discombobulated sound like no other. This is mind-altering music — the combination of country song structures, Hazlewood’s deep baritone, the sweet voices of Nina Lizell and Suzi Jane Hokom, rolling acoustic guitars, ominous strings, harpsichords and flutes, eerie pianos, and endless echo is stranger than outright avant-garde music, since the familiar is undone by unexpected arrangements. Though the songs are all well-written, Cowboy in Sweden is ultimately about the sound and mood it evokes — and it’s quite singular in that regard.

Wilson is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to bluegrass music, splitting his time between building custom banjos, performing vintage guitar restoration, working as a recording engineer, assisting his wife Melanie with bluegrass publicity company Wilson Pickins Promotions, and of course, performing with Wilson Banjo Co. Wilson released an EP with several musician friends last year, partially as a way to promote his custom banjos, but ended up organizing a full-fledged band when the EP began to attract radio attention. The group now also consists of Joey Newton (guitar), Sarah Logan (fiddle), Brandon Couch (mandolin), Dylan Armour (dobro), and Rob Walker (bass).
