Sara Groves announces the release of her 13th studio album, Abide With Me, for Nov. 17th. Following her critically acclaimed Floodplain, the record includes songs carefully selected from Groves’ personal list of hymns, with each song having provided a source of healing and comfort to the singer/songwriter throughout the years.
“My last album found me on the Floodplain reflecting on the kind provision that comes when I find myself in a place where I cannot rescue myself,” says Groves. “Abide With Me is a collection of hymns and songs that were with me on the Floodplain. A highlight for me was re-tracking ‘He’s Always Been Faithful’ with piano, upright bass and woodwinds. For this new record, Childress traveled to Portland to record with veteran Americana musician and producer Mike Coykendall, known for his work with artists M. Ward, Bright Eyes, Jolie Holland, She & Him and Old Joe Clarks. Joseph began with tracking guitar and vocals solo. Additional musicians Aaron Robinson (Linda Perhacs, Sean Rowe, Bridget St. John), Joey Ficken (Swords), Tom Lucas (Crooked Jades) and Coykendall layered guitars, percussion, fiddle and bass to create a hearty mountain band that pivots between spartan country, gritty pop, and outsider americana. The results are a close sound that follows in the tradition of earlier troubadours: Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Kate Wolf; and modern alt-country artists: Jason Molina, Jayhawks and Will Oldham, without feeling derivative. The album is permeated with authenticity in his delivery of psychedelic memories and emotional landscapes. Joseph explains, “I tried to keep it very organic, not a lot of special treatments. My goal was to make it sound as if we were playing in your living room.”

Strange Days, originally issued on Elektra in September 1967, reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and yielded two hit singles with “People Are Strange” (No. 12 Pop) and “Love Me Two Times” (No. 25 Pop). Recorded like The Doors at Hollywood’s Sunset Sound, the LP was the band’s first to be recorded on eight tracks, allowing for a more expansive and experimental sound than its predecessor. Its songs were a mix of both current tunes and older ones tested onstage; the band performed “Strange Days” during its 1966 residency at the London Fog in L.A., and “My Eyes Have Seen You” dates back to 1965. “Moonlight Drive” was a similarly early composition, and one of …the first songs Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore ever rehearsed together.
The Strange Days: 50th Anniversary Edition has been produced by the album’s original engineer Bruce Botnick and restores the original stereo mix to CD for the first time in over a decade, fully remastering it for the first time in 30 years. The second disc features the album’s original mono mix, which has been remastered for this set and is making its CD debut.

ΑΓΟΡΙΑSTONILIO ο αυτοκράτορας της μπούρδας
Το δεύτερο άλμπουμ των Αγόριαstonilio (Μαρίνος Τζιάρος, Socos, Κυριάκος Βοργιάς, Ντίνος Ξαρχάκος), δυόμισι χρόνια μετά το παρθενικό τους «Paranoika-Παρανόικα», είναι γεγονός. Λέμε για τον «Αυτοκράτορα της Μπούρδας», που διατίθεται σε ψηφιακή έκδοση και βεβαίως σε βινύλιο διακοσίων αριθμημένων αντιτύπων συν 4σέλιδο insert, με στίχους, φωτογραφίες και λοιπές πληροφορίες, από την B-otherSide Records και τα Artracks Recording Studios.

Όπως στο πρώτο long play τους, έτσι και σ’ αυτό τα Αγόριαstonilio… ξεσκίζονται. Παίζουν μανιασμένο punk-rock θέλω να πω, άγριο και σημερινό, στηριγμένοι στην τραγουδοποιία του Socos και στα φωνητικά του Τζιάρου – που για μένα είναι (δεν ξέρω αν το έχω ξαναπεί, νομίζω) ένας από τους καλύτερους, σύγχρονους έλληνες ροκ τραγουδιστές… αν όχι ο καλύτερος. Φυσικά, από δίπλα, το ίδιο αχαλίνωτο στέκει και το ρυθμικό τμήμα (ο μπασίστας Βοργιάς με τον ντράμερ Ξαρχάκο), που κάνει φοβερή δουλειά, ενώ το ίδιο υψηλή είναι και η ηχογράφηση-παραγωγή (με τους Μπόλπαση και Πρινιωτάκη να κάνουν μικρά θαύματα).
Εκείνο που… τρελαίνει στην τραγουδοποιία του Socos είναι αυτές οι μικρές ή μεγαλύτερες, ανεπαίσθητες ή λιγότερο, μελωδίες του, έτσι όπως παρεισφρέουν εκείνες ανάμεσα στα ρυθμικά patterns και στα καταιγιστικά παιξίματα. Αυτό δεν είναι εύκολο, και προσωπικά το ακούω, από παλιά, κυρίως στα συγκροτήματα τού αμερικάνικου punk από τα τέλη του ’70 και τις αρχές του ’80 (Bags, Alley Cats, X κ.λπ.). Προσφέρεται εννοώ, μέσω αυτής ταύτης τής πρακτικής, ένα ξεπέταγμα στα τραγούδια, που τα κάνει να μην ακούγονται κοινότοπα και ίδια, μα απεναντίας… απογειωμένα! Από μουσικής πλευράς εννοώ – γιατί, εδώ, έχουμε και στίχους, ελληνικούς στίχους, οργισμένους, σκληρούς, πολιτικοκοινωνικούς και πάνω απ’ όλα ουσιαστικούς, που έχουν τη δική τους αυτοδύναμη αξία.
Από τα οκτώ τραγούδια του άλμπουμ τα εφτά είναι πρωτότυπα, ενώ υπάρχει και μια φοβερή διασκευή στο “Master of puppets” των Metallica – ένα από τα ωραιότερα τραγούδια του αμερικανικού συγκροτήματος, που ταιριάζει και από στιχουργικής πλευράς με το ρεπερτόριο των Αγόριαstonilio (σχετικό με τις σκοτεινές ανθρώπινες συνήθειες, ναρκωτικά ή ό,τι άλλο, που εξουσιάζουν τους εαυτούς μας, οδηγώντας μας να γίνουμε δέσμιοι καταστάσεων, τις οποίες δεν μπορούμε να ξεπεράσουμε).
Το άλμπουμ θα κλείσει με το μεγαλύτερο σε διάρκεια track του σετ, ένα 7λεπτο ακουστικό κομμάτι, που ξεχωρίζει και όχι μόνον γι’ αυτό το λόγο (επειδή είναι ακουστικό εννοώ).
Από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα άλμπουμ του ελληνικού ροκ, ασυζητητί, που άκουσα μέσα στο 2017. Τώρα, αν είναι «πρώτο» ή «δεύτερο» κ.λπ. αυτό θα πρέπει να το τσεκάρω – αν και δεν έχει κάποια ιδιαίτερη σημασία.
