Mark Stoermer – Filthy Apes and Lions (2017)

One great album in a year is more than enough for most people, but alongside Wonderful Wonderful The Killers’ bassist Mark Stoermer has also found the time to unleash his third solo record. These two albums couldn’t be much further removed from each other however. Filthy Apes and Lions is a psychedelic tour de force; vibrant, complex, and often bewildering. Musically it builds a world somewhat like the jungle depicted on the cover as it crafts a soundscape that is lush and plentiful, while also being dark and uneasy. ‘Racing in the Rain’ mixes White Album era Beatles with hints of ‘The Great Gig in the Sky’, ‘Nosferatu Blues’ conjures up an Eastern tinged Syd Barrett-esque style, while ‘The Perennial Legend of Dr. Mabuse’ carries an air of vaudevillian villainy, with Mark’s vocals reminiscent of Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt. The album’s highlight however is the epic instrumental ‘Muju’s Revenge’; a sprawling 9 minute excursion through jazz fusion and trippy meanderings worthy of a Grateful Dead acid test.

BLUES REVIVAL 26: LONNIE JOHNSON (1899-1970)
Μπορεί η γενικότερη καλλιτεχνική και η ειδικότερη δισκογραφική καριέρα τού Lonnie Johnson να είχε μια μόνιμη και σταθερή πορεία, από τη στιγμή που εμφανίστηκε για πρώτη φορά, το 1925, μέχρι και τις τελευταίες εγγραφές του το 1969, όμως μόνο μέσα από το blues revival, στις αρχές του ’60, θα κάνει κι αυτός αισθητή την παρουσία του, ηχογραφώντας ανελλιπώς και επαναφέροντας στη μνήμη των blues fans την μακρινή ιστορία του.
Ο Lonnie Johnson, που υπήρξε, εκτός από διακεκριμένος συνθέτης, κιθαρίστας και τραγουδιστής του blues, και βιολιστής (θα πρέπει κάποιος να ανατρέξει στο ξεκίνημα της καριέρας του, για να τον απολαύσει έτσι), θα κάνει το μπαμ ακριβώς στο 1960, όταν θα γράψει για την Prestige / Bluesville το “Blues by Lonnie Johnson”, ένα καθοριστικό LP που θα τον καταστήσει αμέσως βασική μονάδα του καταλόγου της εταιρείας από το New Jersey.
Ακολουθώντας το προσωπικό του όραμα για τη δημιουργία ενός ήχου σύγχρονου, που δεν θα αρνείται την παράδοση (κομμάτι της οποίας είχε ο ίδιος δημιουργήσει), ο Lonnie Johnson θα ηχογραφήσει εξαιρετικά άλμπουμ, σαν τα “Blues & Ballads” και “Losing Game” και κυρίως το “Idle Hours” – την όχι και τόσο απρόσμενη, δηλαδή, συνεργασία του με την κυρία του «κλασικού blues» Victoria Spivey (να υπενθυμίσουμε πως Johnson και Spivey δούλεψαν για πρώτη φορά μαζί το 1928).
Έχοντας συνεργασθεί με τους δύο κατά τεκμήριο μεγαλύτερους συνθέτες της κλασικής jazz, τον Louis Armstrong και τον Duke Ellington, ο Johnson υπήρξε ακόμη ένας από τους πρώτους bluesmen που ηχογράφησαν στην Ευρώπη (Λονδίνο, 1952), αλλά και ένας από τους πρώτους ήρωες του American Folk & Blues Festival (Βρέμη 1963).
Πόσα ακόμη θα προσέφερε στο χώρο είναι άγνωστο, αν δεν πέθαινε από τις επιπτώσεις ενός σοβαρού αυτοκινητικού ατυχήματος, στο Τορόντο, στα 71 χρόνια του.

Moulay Omar | Shikhat el Haouz
A recent find at Nassem Halal Meat & Mediterranean Grocery, an Algerian bodega in Astoria. Opened by Noudine Bahri several decades ago (I'm assuming 1980s, but not sure), the place is now managed by a Mexican-American guy who told me his name is Houssain and who began working there about 1997, the year I moved to New York.
I had no idea who the man pictured on the J-card was, but assumed Moroccan, based solely on the djellaba he's sporting over his button-down shirt. Tim and Hammer confirmed my suspicion.
As Tim wrote: "Don't recognize him, but he's certainly Moroccan. The label on the J-card and the tape shell denotes Sawt el Mounadi, an imprint out of Marrakech. Some of the most bitchin' tapes in my stash are on that label. The card reads: 'Shikh Moulay Omar and Shikhat el Haouz,' so this ought to be some fine Aita Houzia!"
Hammer: "You got it all right, Tim. This is Moulay Omar a singer from Ahwaz Marrakesh who saw some mediocre fame in the late 70s in Morocco. The Sheikhat who sang this style in Morocco (Aita Houzia), were very few."
The sound quality on this cassette may not be pristine, but the energy is off the charts. Thanks to Tim and Hammer for translation and context.
