“Red Dog Tracks” was first released in 2005, the third well-received collaboration between veteran singer/songwriter Chip Taylor and then newcomer Carrie Rodriguez. After being out of print for some time, this 10th anniversary edition adds a trio of bonus tracks to the already impressive collection.
Taylor wrote or co-wrote all but four of the 16 tunes. Rodriguez co-wrote one of the better tracks, the sentimental ballad “Once Again, One Day..Will You Be Mine” that prominently features Rodriguez on fiddle. Rodriguez’s fiddle is also nicely showcased in her arrangement of the traditional instrumental “Elzick’s Farewell. Hank Williams’ “I Can’t Help It” and Clarence Williams’ “My Bucket’s Got A Hole In It” are also nicely chosen covers.
Taylor’s “Private Thoughts” features a tasteful solo from guitarist Bill Frisell. The bouncy “Keep Your Hat on Jenny” gets two treatments, the first an effective folksy Appalachian arrangement and the latter a bluesy jam session that shines a spotlight on the individual musicians as Taylor calls them out for solos.
Of the bonus material, most impressive is Rodriguez’s take on the haunting traditional murder ballad “Willow Garden.” Also effective are an early version of Taylor’s “Unglorious Hallelujah” as well as an alternate rendition of the title track.
In addition to Frisell (electric guitar), stellar instrumentation throughout by Jim Whitney (upright bass), Kenny Wolleson (drums) and Richie Stearns effectively supports the smooth harmonies of Taylor (acoustic guitar, harmonica) and Rodriguez (fiddle). Produced by Taylor and Rodriguez, this reissue of the excellent 2005 album has prompted a reunion tour for 2016.

ROLL BACK THE YEARS is the latest release from the vast archive of the late guitarist, singer and songwriter RAINER PTACEK.
Recorded late July / early August 1997 in Tucson, Arizona at the Barrio Viejo home of journalist, author and activist BILL CARTER, with the (then) GIANT SAND rhythm section of Bassist JOEY BURNS and Drummer JOHN CONVERTINO. John and Joey have since gone on to great acclaim as the core duo of the Tucson based band CALEXICO.
Rainer was at a high point in his recovery from a brain tumor when these sessions were recorded. The tribute album to Rainer, THE INNER FLAME had just been released, and a month earlier his triumphant concert at the Performance Center in downtown Tucson (on the eve of his final birthday) had taken place. Rainer’s long time recording engineer Cliff Eager captured these recordings, as he had the Performance Center concert, but less than a month after these sessions took place Rainer suffered the relapse that would finally claim him in November of 1997. Rainer did enter the studios at the urging of GIANT SAND front-man HOWE GELB one last time before he passed away. Those sessions were issued in 2002 as THE FARM. As a result, these session tapes lay tucked away, untouched for many years.
That fact, by all means, has nothing to do with the quality of the album at hand. ROLL BACK THE YEARS captures the sound of three highly skilled musicians caught in the act of listening to each other at the highest level. Here you will find Rainer working on some of his newest compositions, as well as a brace of tunes he loved and performed for years. Some took only one take to capture; others took up to 20 to get just right.

Bark – Year Of The Dog (2017)

Tim Lee 3 has been a favorite of mine over the last few years. Half Neil Young & Crazy Horse and half X, their unique sound translated extremely well to vinyl and stage. With Year of the Dog, Tim Lee and Susan Bauer Lee peel back the layers to give us just the naked songs.
Gone are the chiming guitars and exquisite feedback. In it’s place, we get raw honesty. It’s a Helluva risk, if you think about it. And while the bass dependent nature of the recording may take some getting used to (at least for this long time fan, it did), it also provides some insight into the creative process.
Other than a retake on 33 1/3’s “Our Lady of the Highway”, Tim and Susan give us a completely new experience here. There’s the stripped down, blues inspired “Gator Lake Road”. Similarly, “Half Assed Blues” is a fantastic bit of R&B that would have been a hit for Dr. Feelgood back in the day. At times, Tim Lee’s inflections even sound a little bit like Lee Brilleaux. The Chuck Berry style shuffle “It’s Your Grave” is another highlight.
While at first I missed the guitars, I have to admit. I really enjoy this record. One simply must give Tim Lee and Susan Bauer Lee all the credit in the world for putting themselves out there, buck naked as it were.
