Not every album needs to be super serious, or reinvent the wheel for that matter. L.A. songstress Pearl Charles brings a dazzling level of complexity to her country pop sound making it feel refreshing and intriguing. Her carefree country-tinged pop-rock bears more pain than it lets on, but unfortunately the album still lacks enough depth to make its amazing arrangements feel as deep as they attempt to be.

Lush synths soar over Charles’ mix of sunny guitars as the album opens on “All The Boys” and Charles layers her instrumentation to wondrous ends. While the song is inherently straightforward, Charles captures the essence of her album’s sound and makes it as digestible as possible. The deep grooves of “Beginner’s Luck” are immediately infectious, as Charles celebrates her independence while lamenting it’s pitfalls. The track’s ambivalent mix of worry and joy makes each swaying hook feel deep and emotionally complex.

Neon guitar riffs make “Sleepless Dreamer” glisten as Charles searches for shelter from society. The song’s glowing euphoria mixes parts HAIM and Sheryl Crow in its excited pop for a track that will make you smile in each build of energy. The desperate worry in “Long Hair” is a refreshing switch of pace for the record, Charles’ more expansive writing gives the song an intriguing air. Unfortunately the much simpler arrangements on this track make it feel lackluster in the overall record, taking away from its stronger lyrics.

Back in 2016 Dan Patlansky became the first artist in history to be voted Blues Rock Review’s #1 album of the year twice with the release of IntroVertigo. This came after 2014’s Dear Silence Thieves also was voted #1. Since then, Patlansky has made his way from South Africa into the European market and continues to build his growing audience. With the recent success obviously expectations are high for Perfection Kills, which will be released on February 2nd and was produced by Patlansky himself.

The album begins with “Johnny,” a strong opener that definitely has Dan’s signature sound we’ve come to know. “Never Long Enough” follows, which begins with a great piano hook and features a very catchy chorus. Patlansky sings about how the times he has home with his wife are “never long enough.” This is definitely a good candidate for a radio single. Next up is “Mayday,” another one of the album’s top tracks about the problems modern day society is causing and relationships crashing as a result.

While many of the songs on Perfection Kills are very rock oriented Dan still has a place for the blues and that shows on “Judge A Man.” Dan sings about past relationships with women who didn’t feel being a musician was a real career. Most of the songs on the album come from Dan’s personal experiences such as “My Dear Boy,” another album highlight which is about Patlansky’s young son.

  • 02/01/18--17:14: Man and Wife (Maure)
  • 56%2525.jpg

We, the male part of our humanoid species, are totally doomed. In the beginning we were created as an image of God himself (on a friday afternoon). A man was considered head of the family: protector, provider and highest authority in family matters. And a wife 's main job was to keep het husband happy.

Those days are forever gone. Nowadays the male is the weakest link. Girls are more succesfull in school and university than boys, the remaining bastions of male dominance like politics and the world of finance & banking are crumbling ever faster and scientists never fail to emphasize that in nature males are not unmissable for procreation (parthenogenese)

Most men in a relationship with a female show strong nag-avoiding behaviour, is my observation. There are even households that force the former crown of creation to pee sitting down. And then todays newspaper: 59% of women think men doing domestic work are sexy! Can you believe it?! Mental castration is a term that comes to mind.. Don't get me wrong: i am very household crafty but i seldom feel sexy doing it,
MauretanieFemmes1.JPGIn the land of Mauretania things appear less complicated. A man = a man and a woman = woman and never the twain shall meet.  Except in the dark ofcourse. Perhaps a little too rigid, but musically it seems to have no disadvantages.

    Republique Islamique De Mauretanie

Man = man, vrouw = vrouw and never the twain shall meet. Behalve in het donker natuurlijk. Wellicht iets te rigide, maar muzikaal lijkt 't geen nadeel te kennen.
