Διάβασα στο bandcampπως οι Madebygrey είναι ένα project του Αντώνη Χατζημιχάλη (παίζει κιθάρες, πιάνο, glockenspiel, μπάσο), ο οποίος πλαισιώνεται από μερικούς ακόμη μουσικούς (Βαγγέλης Τσιμπλάκης ντραμς, Γιώργος Κωνσταντίνου μπάσο, Σοφία Σιώρα τρομπέτα, Χαράλαμπος Παρίτσης βιολί, Αντώνης Ανδρέου τρομπόνι και επιπροσθέτως Δημήτρης Σφυράκης κιθάρες σε δύο tracks) και που όλοι μαζί δημιουργούν αυτό το άλμπουμ, το “#grief” [Ikaros, 2017], που διακρίνεται για την… cinematic instrumental μουσική του, μ’ ένα άγγιγμα από post-rock. Χοντρικώς, κάπως έτσι έχουν τα πράγματα… αν και μπορούμε, και πρέπει, να πούμε λίγα λόγια παραπάνω.

Το άλμπουμ ανοίγει με το “beautiful strange otherness”, ένα κομμάτι σε κάπως γρήγορο τέμπο με ωραία ανάπτυξη, breaks (γεμίσματα) από την τρομπέτα κι ένα σπάσιμο του τέμπο κάπου προς τη μέση, όταν φωνή και βιολί, απομυθοποιούν κάπως την αφήγηση. Cinematic δεν θα το έλεγα και τόσο… post-rock όμως ok. Ακολουθεί το “the upward turn”, που ξεκινάει αργά και κάπως τελετουργικά (με βιολί και κιθάρες μπροστά), για να πάρει πολύ τα πάνω στην πορεία, όταν η μελωδία γεμίζει από παντού με το τρομπόνι, την κιθάρα και το βιολί να κάνουν γερή δουλειά. Ωραίο κομμάτι! Η πλευρά θα κλείσει (για βινύλιο συζητάμε πάντα) με το “immune”, που έχει την ίδια λογική ανάπτυξης με το προηγούμενο track, αν και διαθέτει πιο βαριές κιθάρες. Όχι, δεν είναι heavy, καθώς μετά τη μέση αλλάζει πάλι με τύπου boléro ντραμς και με το βιολί με την τρομπέτα να «ζωγραφίζουν» αποφασιστικά.

Η β πλευρά ξεκινάει με το “irreversible” ένα βαρύ και κάπως επικό με στοιχεία stonerκομμάτι, που «σπάνε» φυσικά από την παρουσία της τρομπέτας. Όπως στα περισσότερα tracks του “#grief” έτσι κι εδώ έχουμε μιαν «αλλαγή» περί τη μέση, πριν το κομμάτι «ξαναφύγει» στο υπόλοιπο μισό. Το “numb”, που ακολουθεί, είναι το μικρότερο σε διάρκεια trackτου LP (μόλις 1:42) και μοιάζει κάπως με ιντερμέτζο ή σαν εισαγωγή στο “bargaining”, που έφερε στη μνήμη μου τους Electric Litany(γενικώς, θα έλεγα πως τα δύο γκρουπ δεν τα χωρίζουν και τόσα πολλά), πριν το άλμπουμ ολοκληρωθεί με το 8λεπτο “waltz of denial”, ένα ακόμη θαυμάσιο ορχηστρικό, που αναπτύσσεται χαλαρά, αλλά πάντα με τόλμη και με δύναμη.

Πολύ καλό άλμπουμ από τους Madebygrey – ντεμπούτο ουσιαστικά, καθώς είχε προηγηθεί ένα EPτο 2013.

If every global music compilation series had a personality, World Music Network’s Rough Guides would constantly be that kid at the head of the class, the overachiever that makes everything look effortless as they wreck yet another curve. Everything is polished, professional, and meticulously curated, and on The Rough Guide to the Music of West Africa, this tradition of excellence continues with 15 tracks from seven West African countries, showcasing an incredible variety of music from an outstandingly diverse region of the world.
Writing it all out, it sounds like a particularly deluxe tour package — in the port city of Dakar, singer/songwriter Nuru Kane blends gnawa and griot sounds for a uniquely hypnotic…

…sound on “Afrika”. Landlocked in Mali, the likes of Samba Touré and Anansy Cissé serenade us with melancholy guitar and ngoni. In Niger, don’t miss the melodic desert blues of Etran Finatawa! — but everything is neatly, tightly packaged here, with no hassle through customs. What’s more, the travel goes not only through space, but also time with the classic Nigerian psych rock of Sir Victor Uwaifo’s “Ekassa 28”.

The long and short of it is that everything here is good, high-quality music. Some of the artists will be very familiar to followers of West African pop music: the aforementioned Sir Victor Uwaifo, for example, and Cameroon’s Sally Nyolo. Up-and-comer Noumoucounda Cissoko’s nimble kora playing leads to rapid-fire verses and lively rhythms on autobiographical “Noumou Koradioulou”.

Deeper cuts come from the Bidjoï Sisters, whose call-and-response song “Chantal” was recorded in a tin-roofed studio in Cameroon by Sally Nyolo along with a host of other local groups’ music, and the Bamako School for the Blind, where students perform the catchy, bass-heavy “Farinya Manji”. Seprewa Kasa puts the spotlight on the lesser-known Malian seprewa, an instrument somewhere between a harp and a lute that makes for some sweet highlife-roots music on “Adowa (Otanfo)”. Hailing from Ghana, palm-wine music superstar Koo Nimo adds a soft, contemplative note to the mix with an acoustic medley the album’s liner notes name in full as “Adowa Palmwine Set: You Will Be Overtaken By Events / Listen, Listen and Listen Again”.

Every collection of music grouped by region has its structural flaws upon closer examination, and The Rough Guide to the Music of West Africa is no different. It’s important to recognize that by no means does this album represent every country in West Africa or even a contiguous group of nations. It certainly can’t represent every musical style in even a single country, but it never dwells too long in one place, and each song has a totally distinct flavor. For an album meant to cover such a broad expanse of land and culture, that’s about as good as it gets.

Each new Rough Guides release brings with it comfort and reassurance, and West Africa is no different. There’s no fear of anything sub-par coming through your speakers: you can simply lay back and bask in the music.

One More Crooked Dance feels like a deliberate and concerted effort to further show the world the vast scope of who Jules Shear is. Shear didn’t have to wander far from his Woodstock, NY home to wrangle some local artists and friends to join him on this journey. The album includes the talents of Pepe on piano, touring partner Molly Farley lends some vocals and the fabled John Sebastian joins in on harp.

With just piano, Shear’s beautiful, haunting vocals and the occasional harmonica interspersed, 13 intimate songs on One More Crooked Dance are full of renewed purpose and energy, a record made up of bruised and beaten characters who refuse to give up. That’s something captured perfectly by the emotional vocal of “Pain Killer” repeated over and over again in “Tangled Up In Blue” and “The Hunter and the Hunted,” to name a few. As the songs surge towards their climax, that struggle in them or, rather, the fight against that struggle, feels real.

Shear has been a staple for 40-plus years as a songwriter and artist, starting with the Funky Kings, moving on to Jules and the Polar Bears and an impressive solo career, he has penned hits like Cyndi Lauper’s “All Through the Night,” The Bangles “If She Knew What She Wants” and his own “Steady,” a co-write with Lauper. Not to mention catalog mainstays such as Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers’ “If We Never Meet Again”, Til Tuesday’s “Lucky” and Alison Moyer’s “Whispering Your Name.” And let’s not forget he was the host (and co-creator) of the influential MTV Unplugged.

In his entire career Shear has never released an album without guitar, bass and drums, so One More Crooked Dance is a first for him and it works because the songs on the album are personal and filled with passion.
