Un peu d'histoire de la musique...

En 1990, un peu - beaucoup- au creux de la vague, Gilbert signe (les yeux fermés) avec le label a.v.r.e.p. (Celui d'Aboulker et Lavoine)

Il enregistre tout d'abord un premier 45T "Plus fort la vie" en français et en anglais. Le titre est tiré d'un bouquin (et je me trompe peut-être mais il me semble que ce titre a été le générique d'une émission Tv, quelqu'un se rappelle ?) Le 45T est produit étrangement par l'autre star de a.v.r.e.p. ... Pierre Bachelet !!!
Malgré tout ça le single fait un four...

Pas déconvenue pour autant, le Gilbert enregistre tout un album qui sort donc en 1991... "Plus fort la vie" est réenregistré pour l'occasion...
Il n'y aura qu'un autre single extrait : "Le cœur en sursis", qui existe en 3 versions...

Le Kiki passe par là, dégote un CD (qui normalement coûte un bras !), reprend les pistes sonores, et vous offre donc cette "intégrale" des années a.v.r.e.p. !

J'ai déplacé le dernier titre "Bonus voix" à la fin de l'album, vous comprendrez pourquoi en écoutant... Il fallait oser, Gilbert l'a fait !

What do you get when you match a Brit from London who loves American AOR with an American from California who grew up on British Prog? Dukes of the Orient is the masterful pairing of vocalist John Payne (ex-ASIA, GPS) with keyboardist Erik Norlander (Last in Line, Lana Lane, Rocket Scientists) who now present their eponymous debut album, ten years in the making. Payne’s powerful arena-seasoned vocals carry soaring melodies and lush harmonies over the sea of classic synthesizers and keyboards artfully painted with Norlander’s signature sonic palette.

Payne says of the album, “With Dukes of the Orient we have dug deep with analog soundscapes, superlative musicians and song-driven epics. Add to this the masterful artwork of Rodney Matthews and a journey that started with the supergroup ASIA, we give you the next chapter, one we are extremely proud of.”

The two are backed by a world-renown ensemble of top musicians including Jeff Kollman, Guthrie Govan, Moni Scaria and Bruce Bouillet on guitar, Molly Rogers on strings and Jay Schellen on drums. Payne provides bass guitar and additional lead and rhythm guitar parts to complete the audiophile production. The album was mixed on a traditional analog console to preserve and enhance the natural depth, clarity and soul of the tracks with great care taken to avoid over-compression, extreme equalization and distortion.

Dukes of the Orient has its origins in 2007 as “ASIA Featuring John Payne,” a band that continued on after ASIA keyboardist, Geoff Downes, left the band to re-form the original 1982 lineup. Payne recruited Norlander to join Guthrie Govan and Jay Schellen for tour dates in the US and initial recordings, some of which endured to appear on the Dukes of the Orient album here. Govan left the band to form The Aristocrats and was replaced by guitarist Bruce Bouillet followed by Jeff Kollman and Moni Scaria. The final lineup resulted in the track, “Seasons Will Change,” released as a video in 2013 and also now appears on the Dukes of the Orient album. Following the death of original ASIA vocalist, John Wetton, in early 2017, Payne and Norlander decided that these recordings should give birth to a new band, both out of respect for Wetton and for clarity with the Downes-led ASIA.

Dukes of the Orient releases their eponymous debut album with stunning cover art by Rodney Matthews on February 23, 2018.

Vantomme είναι τοεπώνυμο του βέλγου κιμπορντίστα Dominique Vantomme και με αυτό ακριβώς το επώνυμο αναγνωρίζεται μια φοβερή τετράδα, ένα περιστασιακό γκρουπ, που το αποτελούν προσέτι ο κιθαρίστας Michel Delville (από Wrong Object, douBt, Machine Mass), ο μεγάλος Tony Levin (σε μπάσο και chapman stick) και ακόμη οντράμερ Maxime Lenssens. Οι τέσσερις αυτοί μουσικοί βρέθηκαν τον Οκτώβριο του 2016 σ’ ένα στούντιο της Αμβέρσας (στη συνοικία Hoboken) κι εκεί, μέσα σ’ ένα κλίμα βαριάς… προγκρεσιβιάς, έδωσαν νόημα σε μια σειρά συνθέσεων του Vantomme, που μετατράπηκαν αυθωρεί σε άλμπουμ. “Vegir” [MoonJune, 2018] ο τίτλος του… και στην πράξη ένα καταπληκτικό, ζωντανό progressive, από Quiet Sunκαι πέρα.

Canterburyνα το αποκαλέσουμε; Γιατί όχι; Έχει πολλά τοιούτα αισθητικά στοιχεία. Κυρίως της δεύτερης εποχής, μετά το 1972-73 δηλαδή, τύπου Matching Mole ας πούμε, μα και Hatfields, αλλά βασικά Quiet Sun(εκείνη η δισκάρα, από το 1975, που έφτιαξαν οι Dave Jarrett, Manzanera, Eno και οι υπόλοιποι), με μιαν όμως επισήμανση. Πως οι συνθέσεις στο “Vegir”, οι συνθέσεις του Vantomme, είναι ισάξιες με όλες τις παλαιές, σε ιδέες, παικτικό περφεξιονισμό και τελικώς σε ευχαρίστηση και απόλαυση. Γιατί, αυτό είναι το βασικό – καθότι υπάρχουν πάμπολλα Canterbury sounding projects, αλλά λίγα που να μπορεί να συναγωνιστούν τους Vantommeσ’ ένα τόσο υψηλό επίπεδο.

Εκπληκτικά complex tracksέχουμε εδώ, φισκαρισμένα στις σολιστικές ακολουθίες, διαλυμένα μέσα σε έξοχα avant, jazz και progressive περιβάλλοντα. Φυσικά, τα πλήκτρα του Vantomme(fender rhodes, πιάνο, mini moog, mellotron) κάνουν τρομερή δουλειά, γεμίζοντας τον ήχο της τετράδας συνεχώς και αδιαλείπτως, όμως και οι κιθάρες του Delvilleδεν μένουν πίσω (με πολλά και διαφορετικά ηχοχρώματα, επινοήσεις, εφφέ κ.λπ.), ούτε βεβαίως το ρυθμικό τμήμα, με τον Levin να κάνει φοβερά πράγματα με το… βομβαρδιστικό μπάσο του, αλλά και με το chapman stick, και με τον όχι και τόσο γνωστό Lenssensνα αποδεικνύεται εντυπωσιακός και ουσιαστικός συνάμα.

Περιττό να πω πως στο “Vegir” δεν υπάρχει ούτε μισό ηχογραφημένο λεπτό χωρίς αληθινό ενδιαφέρον και πως συνθέσεις σαν τις “Sizzurp”, “The self licking ice-cream cone” και “Equal minds” τις τοποθετείς αμέσως στην πρώτη γραμμή του progressive rock, πέραν από εποχές ή στυλ.
