Since Myles Kennedy first mentioned the idea of a solo album back in 2009, fans have been anxiously awaiting what the Alter Bridge frontman would come up with. Now the weight of anticipation has finally been lifted as Kennedy has revealed that his solo debut, Year of the Tiger, will be released on March 9 through Napalm Records.

The 12-track offering finds Kennedy exploring new sonic realms, branching out from the heavier sounds of Alter Bridge and Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. There’s a narrative to Year of the Tiger and the musician expands his role beyond guitar and singing as he plays banjo, lap steel, bass, and mandolin as well.

Σαξοφωνίστας (τενόρο) και κλαρινίστας είναι ο Dan Block, ένας μουσικός που έχει πολλές και καλές συνεργασίες να παρουσιάσει (από Wynton Marsalis και Toshiko Akiyoshi, μέχρι Natalie Cole και Linda Ronstadt).

Στο “Block Party (A Saint Louis Connection)” [Miles High, 2017], που είναι το πιο πρόσφατο CD του, ο Block στήνει, πραγματικά μιαγιορτή, ένα πάρτυ, τη βοηθεία μερικών δυνατών σολιστών (Rob Block κιθάρες, Tadataka Unno πιάνο, Neal Caine μπάσο, Aaron Kimmel ντραμς) και βεβαίως μέσω ενός σετ συνθέσεων υπεράνω πάσης υποψίας.

Ναι, στάνταρντ είναι βασικά αυτά πουακούγονται εδώ, όπως το θαυμάσιο “Dinner for one please, James” (από τορεπερτόριο των Nat King Cole, Eartha Kitt κ.ά.), το “Light blue” του Thelonious Monk, το “Smoke signal” του Gigi Gryce, τα “Beautiful changes” και “Ain’t no land like dixieland” του  Walter Donaldson κ.λπ.

Γράψαμε τη μαγική λέξη (dixieland); Ίσως ναι, αφού δεν θα πρέπει να υπάρχει κλαρινίστας στην Αμερική, που να μην έχει την παλαιά jazz και βεβαίως την dixieland ως ευαγγέλιο, επαναφέροντας, με κάθε ευκαιρία, στο μουσικό σήμερα πολλές και διαφορετικές μνήμες. Μνήμες ακόμη και από τον θρυλικό κορνετίστα Bix Beiderbecke εν προκειμένω, στην παικτική παρακαταθήκη του οποίου ανήκουν και οι δύο συνθέσεις τού Walter Donaldson, που ακούγονται στο πάρτυ.

Να σημειώσουμε, όμως, πως αυτές οι κλασικές συνθέσεις δεν επαναφέρονται στο τώρα με τον προ… 90ετίας τρόπο, καθώς ο Block, κάνοντας ξεχωριστή δουλειά πάνω στις αρμονίες και στις συγχορδιακές διαδοχές, ξέρει να δημιουργεί άλλου τύπου περιβάλλοντα, περισσότερο sixties να πούμε, παίζοντας σόλι στο τενόρο του με απαράμιλλη δύναμη, αφήνοντας συγχρόνως τα κατάλληλα «κενά», τα οποία και θα «γεμίσουν» οι υπόλοιποι σολίστες του. Αρκεί κάποιος ν’ ακούσει το πώς διασκευάζεται και το πώς επανατοποθετείται το “Beautiful changes”, απ’ αυτούς τους εξαιρετικούς μουσικούς, για ν’ αντιληφθεί τη δουλειά που έχει γίνει, στο “Block Party(A Saint Louis Connection)”, σ’ ένα πίσω πλάνο.

Και φυσικά από μια τέτοια γιορτή, που μπορεί να περιστρέφεται (και) γύρω από την «παλαιά τζαζ», με το απολύτως όμως σύγχρονο πρόσωπο, δεν θα μπορούσε να απουσιάζει και το blues, μέσω του καταπληκτικού “By the fireside” του Ray Noble, το οποίο διασκευάζεται από τον Dan Block και τους φίλους του μ’ έναν αληθινά εντυπωσιακό τρόπο.

Έξοχο CD με μνήμες μουσικές που θα παραμένουν πάντα ζωντανές, όσο θ’ αντιμετωπίζονται από τους νεότερους μουσικούς με σεβασμό, που να μην αποκλείει την ταυτόχρονη διάθεση για πρωτοτυπία.

They Call Me Mud contains twelve dynamite tracks and will have your attention from the first to the last. And why not, as Morganfield is joined by some of the finest musicians in the world including harp virtuosos Billy Branch, and Studebaker John. Joining the festivities on guitar are Chicago blues and jazz master Billy Flynn, and next generation and keeper of the blues flame Chicago guitarist Mike Wheeler.

Morganfield played bass and produced the album along with Rick Kreher, who also plays guitar. He also wrote ten of the twelve songs here and covers two of his father’s songs: “Howling Wolf,” and “Can’t Get No Grinding.” The mix by Studebaker John and Brian Leach is right on the money and really brings out the subtleties of these performances.

L.A. Woman is the sixth studio album by the American rock band the Doors, released on April 19, 1971, on Elektra Records. It is the last to feature the group's lead singer, Jim Morrison, who died three months after the album's release.
