    os-cinco-crioulos-front

Almost ten years ago I posted an album by these guys.
Five heroes in samba, Seu Jair do Cavaquinho, Nelson
Sargento, Elton medeiros, Mauro Duarte and Anescarzinho
do Salgueiro formed Os Cinco Crioulos. This is a record from
1969, sweet early samba songs. I am a huge lover of this sound.

Het is bijna tien jaar geleden dat ik een plaatje van deze jongens
heb gepost. Vijf samba helden in mijn optiek, Seu Jair do Cavaquinho,
Nelson Sargento, Elton medeiros, Mauro Duarte en Anescarzinho
do Salgueiro vormden Os Cinco Crioulos. Dit is en elpee uit 1969,
Heerlijke vroege sambas waar je ogenblikkelijk blij van wordt.

    tracks ;

    01 – Gargalhei
    02 – Vida apertada
03 – Em cima da hora
    04 – Só vou dizer
    05 – Aquela nêga
    06 – A sombra do salgueiro
    07 – Lamentação
08 – Fingiu que não me viu
    09 – Machucando o jiló
    10 – Solidão
    11 – Meu amor foi-se embora

It’s been six years since multi-award winner Ian Siegal last released a studio album with a band. The intervening years have been busy with solo projects and live recordings. Now he’s back with a collection of new songs that are classic Siegal – full of the dark and light, clever word play and rough-hewn voicebox he is known for. All The Rage picks up from his previous MOJO Blues Albums of the Year and continues his exploration of Americana – ranging from several shades of gritty blues to countrified ballads, tex-mex flavours and classic soul. The ‘Rage’ of the album title refers to Siegal’s discontent at world politics. While far from a political protest album some of the songs reflect his anger and fear at world events.

In some ways, being a touring musician is a lot like being an anthropologist. In traveling from city to city, you spend a lot of time interacting with strangers, whether it’s checking into the latest motel or stopping by a local watering hole for a drink after the show. You quickly pick up on how the shared quirks of a few small-town bartenders may actually tell a much larger story than a couple minutes of small talk initially reveal, or how the relationship squabbles overheard in the hotel lobby late at night share similar themes regardless of geographic locale.

Accordingly, touring is also a great way to find material for new songs. Courtney Marie Andrews did just that when writing her forthcoming album May Your Kindness Remain, a collection of songs, borne from interactions with others, that strives for healing and empathy in the midst of division and discord.

On the album’s title track, Andrews seems to look back on all the folks she’s met over the years to offer up, as its title suggests, a little kindness. Addressing a lonely “underground queen” and a broke barfly “throwing [his or her] paycheck away,” Andrews positions kindness as an antidote both to broken-heartedness and to bad luck. Her mention of the latter gently tackles the ills of capitalism (“The richest of people aren’t rich with houses, cars, or fame,” she croons) without veering into self-righteous moralizing.

Sonically, the track signals a new direction for Andrews, who, alongside producer Mark Howard, ventures beyond acoustic folk and into gospel, soul, and rock over the course of the song’s four minutes. Gospel singer C.C. White lends emotive backing vocals, punctuating Andrews’ verses with soulful “oohs” which build to a crescendo in the song’s latter half. A dissonant, distorted instrumental bridge gives way to a quiet final verse before Andrews, White and the band bring the whole thing home in a chorus buoyed by vulnerable bombast.

While the idea of an “American dream” is becoming murkier by the day and kind words among strangers — particularly online — can feel at a premium, the lessons Andrews has learned traveling the country are, ultimately, optimistic ones. Even if some of us are lucky enough to keep our money from running out, all our good looks will certainly fade, and “busted,” “bent” hearts spare no one. In the end, all we’re really after is a little kindness.

Released in the summer of 1970, Number 5 was the fifth LP by the Steve Miller Band in just over two years. While it compares favorably to its immediate predecessor, Your Saving Grace, it is not quite up to the consistent excellence of the potent Brave New World from the previous summer. However, it does have a fair share of delights, especially the opening triumvirate of “Good Morning,” “I Love You,” and “Going to the Country.” These selections, and all of side one, have a distinctly more rural feel than did previous recordings, due perhaps to the fact that the tracks were recorded in Nashville. Charlie McCoy contributes harmonica to several of these cuts, and Buddy Spicher plays fiddle on “Going to the Country,” while Bobby Thompson adds banjo to “Tokin’s.” Side two is more uneven, with the lead-off mid-tempo rocker “Going to Mexico” serving as a conclusion to the first side’s thematic coherence, and the closing “Never Kill Another Man” a string-laden ballad. Sandwiched between them are three experimental-sounding pieces, seasoned with sound effects, buried vocals, and semi-political themes. Although it couldn’t have been predicted at the time, Number 5 represented the end of an era for Steve Miller and bandmates, and subsequent albums would sound nothing like this first batch of great recordings.
