Gene Autry, ‘The Singing Cowboy’, is widely hailed as one of the first true superstars of country music. Ryley Walker is set to release new album ‘Deafman Glance’ on May 18th.
The songwriter is almost continually working, a steady flow of new material that presents a mind in perpetual evolution.
‘Deafman Glance’ was seemingly born from an attempt to step outside of himself, to move past the tags associated with his work.
Out shortly, dreamy new cut ‘Telluride Speed’ hinges on that revolving guitar riff, dreamy electronics, and that pastoral flute line.
He comments: “I think more than anything the thing to take away from this record is that I appreciate what improv and jamming and that outlook on music has done for me, but I wanted rigid structure for these songs. I don’t want to expand upon them live. There’s a looseness to some of the songs I guess, but I didn’t want to rely on just hanging out on one note.”
“I was under a lot of stress because I was trying to make an anti-folk record and I was having trouble doing it,” Ryley continues. “I wanted to make something deep-fried and more me-sounding.”
“I didn’t want to be jammy acoustic guy anymore. I just wanted to make something weird and far-out that came from the heart finally. I was always trying to make something like this I guess, trying to catch up with my imagination. And I think I succeeded in that way — it’s got some weird instrumentation on there, and some surreal far-out words. And it’s more Chicago-y sounding. Chicago sounds like a train constantly coming towards you but never arriving. That’s the sound I hear, all the time, ringing in my ears.”

Richey returns with her eighth studio album “Edgeland” . “Edgeland,” is defined as the lost zone between urban and rural environments, a concept which mimics Richey’s constant fluctuation between the rigid genre definitions of country and Americana music. Richey naturally settles between the two, ignoring convention and instead allowing her own intuitive musical progression to shape her sound. On her latest record, Richey teamed up with producer Brad Jones at his studio Alex the Great Recording in Nashville during the summer of 2017. Following in the collaborative footsteps of her 2013 album, Thorn In My Heart, Richey brought in a few of her most talented friends to record Edgeland, filling the tracks with accompanying vocals and instrumental contributions that make for a pleasant surprise at every turn. The result is a 12-track collection of work showcasing both Richey’s musical adaptability and knack for collaborative songwriting. The live albums the band released during its 30-year career are the primary source for the collection, including tracks like “Bertha” from Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses) (1971), “Fire On The Mountain” from Dead Set (1981), and “The Music Never Stopped” from One From the Vault (1991). A testament to its ongoing popularity, the revered double-album Europe ’72 (1972), is represented by no less than five tracks, including “Sugar Magnolia,” “Jack Straw” and a searing rendition of “Morning Dew.”
Other performances on the set were selected from the growing number of live releases that have emerged since the death of founding member Jerry Garcia in 1995. Some of those recordings include “Touch Of Grey” from Truckin’ Up To Buffalo (2005), a 1990 version of “Eyes Of The World” with saxophonist Branford Marsalis featured on Wake Up To Find Out (2014), and “Estimated Prophet,” which debuted earlier this year as part of Cornell 5/8/77, a recording of the Grateful Dead’s mythic show at Cornell University in 1977, thought by many to be the band’s greatest live performance.

The Boxer Rebellion today announce the imminent arrival of their 6th studio album ‘Ghost Alive’ which will be released on 23rd March via the band’s own label, Absentee Recordings. This new record presents a very delicately crafted collection of songs which are both tender and immensely courageous in equal measure.
‘Ghost Alive’ is a celebration of the positive impact on oneself and others that can, ultimately, be realised from even the most challenging of human experiences. “On this record we dealt with delicate emotions out in the open,” states the band’s lead guitarist and principle arranger, Andrew Smith. “We wanted to communicate this personal vulnerability by underpinning Nathan’s lyrics with orchestral textures.”

Neil Young + Promise of the Real have announced a new album: Paradox (Original Music From the Film) is out March 23 via Reprise. As the title suggests, it’s the soundtrack to Paradox, a new Western film directed by Daryl Hannah. In addition to new music composed for the movie, the soundtrack features classic Neil Young songs (“Pocahontas”), covers of Willie Nelson, Lead Belly, and the Turtles tracks, and spoken word from Willie Nelson.
Paradox premieres at SXSW on March 15 before it hits Netflix on March 23. The cast includes Neil Young, who plays the “Man in the Black Hat,” as well as Willie Nelson and his sons Lukas and Micah (both of whom are in Young’s backing band Promise of the Real). The soundtrack is Neil Young’s fourth album with Promise of the Real. It follows 2017’s The Visitor, 2016’s EARTH, and 2015’s The Monsanto Years.

Led Zeppelin continue their reissue campaign with a new edition of their celebrated live album How The West Was Won, originally released in 2003, featuring newly remastered audio, which was done under the supervision of Jimmy Page.HOW THE WEST WAS WON highlights the best performances from Led Zeppelin’s legendary concerts at the Los Angeles Forum and Long Beach Arena on June 25 and 27, 1972. Melded together and sequenced to replicate a single concert from beginning to end, it captures the band at the height of its formidable powers. Standouts include a 25-plus minute version of “Dazed And Confused” and a 21-minute medley based around “Whole Lotta Love.” The performances also capture the band introducing songs from its then-unreleased album Houses Of The Holy, which would be released nine months later.
