VA – Kenya Special: Volume Two (Selected East African Recordings from the 1970’s & 80’s)
Soundway Records present Kenya Special: Selected East African Recordings from the 1970s & ‘80s – a treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings from East Africa. It follows on from Soundway’s much acclaimed African ‘Special’ series that to date has focused on the highlife and afrobeat output from 1970s Nigeria and Ghana.
Kenya Special is a collection of 32 recordings (most of which were only ever released on small-run 45rpm 7″ singles) that stand out as being different or unique as well as some classic genre standards. From Kikuyu language ‘liquid soul’, Luo benga and Swahili afrobeat to genre-bending Congolese and Tanzanian tracks recorded in Nairobi, Kenya Special sees Soundway yet again taking the less trodden path. …peppered with innovation and experimentation highlighting how diverse the music scene in Kenya was at the time.
In 1970s Kenya the two threads of rumba and benga loosely dominated the music scene. Benga quickly became Kenya’s unique contribution to afro-pop; spreading like wildfire through the interior countryside with it’s fast, 4/4 machine-gun beat and intricate electric guitar layers. The Congolese take on Afro-Cuban rumba was introduced by touring bands many of whom settled in East Africa – influencing bands from Kenya and Tanzania to come up with their own take on this popular style. Alongside these styles were small ensembles and hotel-sponsored bands, playing a blend of music that often included rock ‘n’ roll riffs, elements of ‘afro’ music (influenced by West African musicians like Fela Kuti), and multiple other combinations from South African and Zambian guitar styles to disco, funk and Swahili coastal rhythms like chakacha.
Painstakingly compiled, assembled and researched over two years by a team of five people from five countries (Kenya included), Kenya Special is a collection that looks beyond the mainstream and brings new life and recognition to some little known gems and forgotten classics of Kenya’s past.

ΜΑΡΙΑ ΘΩΙΔΟΥ ένα ιδιότροπο άλμπουμ
Η επανεμφάνιση στη δισκογραφία τής Μαρίας Θωίδου (γνωστή από τα προσωπικά CD της, όπως και από τις συνεργασίες της με τον Σωκράτη Μάλαμα κ.ά.) έχει τη σημασία που έχει. Το λέω, γιατί η τραγουδοποιία τής Θωίδου διατηρεί πολλά στοιχεία προσωπικά, ιδιοσυγκρασιακά να τα πούμε, που αφορούν τόσο στις συνθέσεις όσο και στις ερμηνείες της. Μάλιστα, στο άλμπουμ «Η Αλήθεια Είναι Δύο» [Μετρονόμος, 2016] όλα τούτα μεγεθύνονται, καθώς οι… αφορμές, που ακούν στα ονόματα Drasta και Χαμένοι Εραστές (τα δύο διαφορετικά γκρουπ, που συνοδεύουν στις συγκεκριμένες εγγραφές τη Θωίδου) συμβάλλουν ακόμη περισσότερο προς το προσωπικό – ενίοτε δε και προς το μοναδικό. Περί τίνος ακριβώς πρόκειται;

Να πούμε κατ’ αρχάς πως έχουμε να κάνουμε με δύο διαφορετικές εγγραφές. Η πρώτη με το συγκρότημα Χαμένοι Εραστές (Θύμιος Ατζακάς ούτι, ηλεκτρική κιθάρα, Κώστας Ράπτης μπαγιάν, Κυριάκος Ταπάκης ηλεκτρικό μπάσο, Λουκάς Μεταξάς κρουστά, Νίκος Παραουλάκης νέυ) προέρχεται από το 2009, ενώ η δεύτερη με τους Drasta(Φίλιππος Κωσταβέλης πιάνο, James Wylie σαξόφωνο, πολίτικη λύρα, Αγαμέμνων Μάρδας κοντραμπάσο, Νίκος Ψοφογιώργος ντραμς) είναι μεταγενέστερη και συνέβη ανάμεσα στα χρόνια 2013-2016.
Εκείνο, που εκ πρώτης μοιάζει περίεργο έχει να κάνει με το γεγονός πως τα κομμάτια τής Θωίδου, με τα δύο διαφορετικά συγκροτήματα, εναλλάσσονται στο CD – είναι ανακατεμένα δηλαδή. Κάτι «επικίνδυνο» νομίζω, αν δεν επρόκειτο, επί της ουσίας, για «ίδια» τραγούδια. Τι τα ενώνει; Η εντελώς ιδιαίτερη ματιά τής τραγουδοποιού στη μελωδική γραφή, που είναι άλλοτε πυκνή και άλλοτε «ελεύθερη», έτοιμη σχεδόν για αυτοσχεδιαστικές παρεκκλίσεις, και βεβαίως οι ερμηνείες της, που είναι τόσο ιδιότυπες και εύπλαστες, καθώς σχετίζονται μ’ ένα «δύσκολο» και στριφνό υλικό (και άρα προσπελάσιμο στον υψηλότερο βαθμό μόνον από την ίδια τη δημιουργό του). Άφησα, παραπέρα, τους στίχους, γιατί και μ’ αυτούς κάτι περίεργο συμβαίνει. Ενώ, όπως τους διαβάζεις σου δίνουν άμεσα την αίσθηση του τραγουδιού (έχουν συγκεκριμένη ροή, εμφανίζουν τυπικές ομοιοκαταληξίες κ.λπ.), στην πράξη, κι έτσι όπως αποδίδονται, μεταπλάθουν το νόημά τους σε κάτι περισσότερο ασαφές και «ελεύθερο», αποδεσμευμένο δηλαδή από την προφανή ροή τού μέτρου.
Τελικά που οδηγούμαστε;
Τo «Η Αλήθεια Είναι Δύο» είναι ένα ιδιότροπο άλμπουμ – όσο ιδιότροπο μπορεί να είναι κάτι που ισορροπεί ανάμεσα στο λεγόμενο «έντεχνο», στην ελληνική μουσική παράδοση και στον τζαζ αυτοσχεδιασμό. Υπάρχουν κομμάτια θαυμαστά εδώ, όσον αφορά στην ευφραδή πολυπλοκότητά τους, όπως είναι το 9λεπτο «Αητέ μου», το 7λεπτο «Ανείπωτο ποτό» ή το 9λεπτο «Τσιμεντένια βουνά» και άλλα που σε πιο... ευθείες ράγες, χωρίς ποτέ να γίνονται «εύκολα («Ούτε που ξέρεις», «Κίτρινες γραμμές»), συντελούν και αυτά προς μιαν εκστατική κατάσταση – με τα πρώτα, χοντρικώς, ν’ ανήκουν στους Χαμένους Εραστές και τα δεύτερα στους Drasta.
Ελάχιστες ελληνίδες τραγουδίστριες μπορούν να προτείνουν τέτοια άλμπουμ σήμερα (και πάντα) και η μόνη που έρχεται, αβίαστα, στο μυαλό μου, ακούγοντας αυτό το CD, είναι η Σαβίνα Γιαννάτου.
Νομίζω πως τώρα γίνομαι ακόμη πιο αντιληπτός…
